Tanzania Northern Circuit Safari Guide: Serengeti, Ngorongoro & Tarangire in One Trip

The Tanzania Northern Circuit is the most celebrated safari route in Africa — a sequence of three parks that together deliver the full range of what Tanzania does better than anywhere else: the Serengeti’s scale and Big Cat density, the Ngorongoro Crater’s extraordinary concentration of wildlife in an enclosed ancient caldera, and Tarangire’s ancient baobab landscape with its dry-season elephant aggregations. The circuit routes through all three from Arusha, typically over 7–10 days, and connects to Zanzibar for a beach finale. It is the most frequently designed Tanzania itinerary that Sense of Adventure builds — and this guide covers every decision a guest needs to make to do it correctly.

The Three Parks — What Each Delivers

1

Serengeti National Park — 14,763 km² of Pure Wildlife

The Serengeti is simply the largest and most wildlife-dense savannah ecosystem in the world. Its 14,763 km² hold the highest lion population density in Africa, year-round cheetah and leopard activity, and the annual passage of the Great Migration’s 1.5 million wildebeest. The northern Serengeti (Kogatende, Lamai) produces the river crossings from July–October. The southern Serengeti (Ndutu, Kusini) hosts the calving season from January–March. Central Serengeti (Seronera) offers year-round Big Cat sightings. Recommend 3+ nights minimum.

2

Ngorongoro Conservation Area — The Big Five in One Day

The Ngorongoro Crater is a 260 km² caldera — a collapsed volcano whose walls form a natural enclosure holding the highest density of large mammals on earth. Approximately 25,000 animals live inside the crater permanently: lion prides, black rhinos (among the last accessible wild black rhinos in Africa), elephant bulls, hippo pools, golden jackals, and massive buffalo herds. A full day in the crater typically produces all Big Five. Ngorongoro is one of only two World Heritage sites that are simultaneously natural and cultural — the Maasai have lived in the conservation area for generations.

3

Tarangire National Park — Baobabs, Elephants & a Different Tanzania

Tarangire’s 2,850 km² of miombo woodland and seasonal floodplain sits 120 km from Arusha — the logical first or last park on the northern circuit. Its ancient baobab trees, some over 1,000 years old, create a landscape that is visually unlike any other Tanzania park. In the dry season (June–October), the Tarangire River is the only permanent water in a vast area, pulling 3,000+ elephants into a daily congregation that rivals Amboseli for pure elephant volume. Recommend 2 nights.

The Standard 8-Night Northern Circuit Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Kilimanjaro Airport. Drive to Arusha (1 hr). Overnight Arusha hotel.

Days 1–3: Tarangire — 2 nights. Road transfer 2.5 hours. Baobabs, elephant river, bush walk option.

Day 3: Fly Kuro (Tarangire) → Serengeti — charter flight 40 minutes to Seronera or Kogatende depending on season.

Days 3–6: Serengeti — 3 nights. North in Jul–Oct (river crossings); south/central Jan–Mar (calving/Big Cats year-round).

Day 6: Fly Serengeti → Manyara airstrip → transfer to Ngorongoro Crater rim lodge.

Days 6–8: Ngorongoro — 2 nights. Dawn crater descent both days. All Big Five.

Day 8: Road transfer Ngorongoro → Kilimanjaro Airport. Depart or connect to Zanzibar (1.5 hrs).

Month-by-Month: Which Serengeti Zone to Book

Month Best Serengeti Zone Migration Activity
Jan–Mar Southern Serengeti — Ndutu Calving season — 500,000 calves
Apr–May Central (Seronera) Herds moving north
Jun Western Corridor (Grumeti) Grumeti River crossings
Jul–Oct Northern Serengeti — Kogatende/Lamai Mara River crossings — peak season
Nov–Dec Central + South (herds dispersing south) Return migration, building

The Crater is not like any other game drive I have done anywhere in Africa. You descend into it and the walls go up around you and there are animals in every direction — rhinos on the lake edge, lions sleeping on a termite mound 50 metres away, elephants coming down to drink. The density is simply incomprehensible until you are inside it.

Frequently Asked Questions — Tanzania Northern Circuit

How many days do I need for the Tanzania Northern Circuit?

Seven nights is a workable minimum: 2 nights Tarangire, 3 nights Serengeti, 2 nights Ngorongoro. Ten nights is ideal — it allows an extra night in the Serengeti and removes any rushed feeling. A 10-night Tanzania circuit plus 4-night Zanzibar beach extension makes a 14-night East Africa trip that covers everything Tanzania has to offer. Sense of Adventure advises based on your available holiday days.

Which is better — Serengeti or Masai Mara?

Different, not comparable. The Serengeti is vastly larger (14,763 km² vs the Mara’s 1,510 km²), has higher lion density, and offers the calving season in January–March that Kenya cannot match. The Masai Mara conservancies offer night drives, walking safaris, and a more intimate vehicle-to-wildlife experience that the Serengeti’s national park structure doesn’t permit. For the full comparison, read our Serengeti vs Masai Mara guide.

Can I add Zanzibar to the Tanzania Northern Circuit?

Yes — and most guests do. Arusha to Zanzibar is 1.5 hours by charter or 2.5 hours by scheduled flight via Dar es Salaam. Sense of Adventure adds Zanzibar to all Tanzania circuits as a standard extension option. For Zanzibar planning, read our Zanzibar guide.
