Masai Mara Safari Packages by Travel Style

Not sure which of our Masai Mara safari packages suits you? Start with your travel style. Each style below points to the packages our guests in that situation choose most often.

Best-value Masai Mara safari packages

If budget matters most, our camping safari and 3-day road safari give you the same reserve, the same wildlife and expert guiding for the lowest price. You sleep in comfortable tented camps or campsites with hot showers and freshly cooked meals, and travel by road from Nairobi with a stop at the Rift Valley viewpoint.

Masai Mara safari packages for couples and honeymooners

Couples usually choose four or five nights with romantic extras: a sunrise balloon flight, private sundowners and a candlelit bush dinner. Our honeymoon and celebration packages include these touches, and we can add a few days on Diani Beach or Zanzibar afterwards.

Masai Mara safari packages for families

Families do best with a private vehicle, a camp with a pool and family tents, and a relaxed pace. Many families combine the Mara with Lake Naivasha for a boat ride among hippos, which breaks up the drive from Nairobi. See our family safari guide.

Masai Mara safari packages for photographers

Photographers need time and flexibility more than anything. Our photographic and big-cat packages use private vehicles with room for camera gear, longer drives in the best light, and guides who understand how to position the vehicle for the shot.

Luxury and fly-in Masai Mara safari packages

If you want to skip the long drive, our fly-in Masai Mara safari packages take about an hour from Wilson Airport, with stays in top conservancy camps, fewer vehicles and night drives. See our luxury Kenya safari packages for longer itineraries.

What Is Included in Our Masai Mara Safari Packages?

Inclusions vary slightly between camping, mid-range and luxury trips, but every package lists them clearly. Most include:

Usually not included: international flights, visas, travel insurance, drinks, tips and optional activities such as balloon flights or a Maasai village visit. Read what is included in a Kenya safari for more detail.

When Is the Best Time for Masai Mara Safari Packages?

The Masai Mara is excellent all year because its resident predators do not migrate. The season you choose shapes what you see, the weather and the price.

SeasonMonthsWhat to expect
Great MigrationJuly to OctoberHuge wildebeest and zebra herds, Mara River crossings, busiest and most expensive
Short rainsNovember to mid-DecemberGreen plains, fewer vehicles, lower rates
Festive seasonMid-December to early JanuaryBusy and festive, green landscapes
Dry seasonJanuary to MarchWarm and dry, excellent predator viewing, good value
Long rainsApril to MayLowest rates, lush scenery, some roads muddy
Early dry seasonJuneHerds start to arrive, rates rising

River crossings are never guaranteed, even in peak season, because the herds move with the rain. Our guides read the conditions daily to put you in the best place. See our guides to the Great Migration in Kenya, whether the migration is guaranteed and the best time to visit the Masai Mara.

Mara River crossings usually happen between late July and September, and our guides watch the herds daily to find them.

How to Get to the Masai Mara From Nairobi

You can reach the Masai Mara by road or by air, and many of our Masai Mara safari packages offer both. Road packages are the best value, while fly-in Masai Mara safari packages save time.

By road

The drive from Nairobi takes about five to six hours, with a stop at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint. It is the best-value option and lets you combine the Mara with Lake Naivasha or Lake Nakuru on the way.

By air

Scheduled light-aircraft flights from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport take about an hour to the Mara’s airstrips, where your guide meets you for a game drive to camp. Flying gives you more time in the reserve but has a soft-bag luggage limit of about 15 kg. See our Masai Mara airstrips guide and fly or drive comparison.

Where to Stay: Reserve or Conservancy?

Your choice of camp shapes your Masai Mara experience as much as your choice of package.

Many of our guests split their stay: a night or two near the river for the migration and a night or two in a conservancy for quieter game viewing. Read reserve vs conservancies and the best camps and lodges in the Masai Mara.
