Nairobi Travel Guide: Safari, Culture & the City Experiences Worth Your Time

Nairobi is not a stopover city — or at least, it does not have to be. For most international visitors it is treated as a transit point between the airport and the bush, which means they arrive exhausted, spend a night in a Westlands hotel, and fly out to the Mara the next morning having seen nothing of a city that is, in fact, one of East Africa’s most engaging capitals. Nairobi has the only national park in the world within a major city’s boundaries, the finest elephant orphanage on the continent, some of the most sophisticated restaurants in sub-Saharan Africa, and a creative culture — art, music, food, fashion — that surprises visitors who arrive expecting something purely utilitarian. This guide covers the specific Nairobi experiences that Sense of Adventure builds into every guest’s itinerary, whether they have half a day or two full days in the city.

The Six Nairobi Experiences Worth Your Time

1

Nairobi National Park — Lions 20 Minutes from the CBD

The world’s only national park within a capital city boundary. Lions, rhinos, buffalos, giraffes, zebras, and over 400 bird species in 117 km² of savannah with the Nairobi skyline on the horizon. A full Big Five game drive in half a day, 20 minutes from the hotel. Sense of Adventure arranges half-day Nairobi National Park game drives with professional guide and transport for guests with limited time in the city.

2

David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust — Baby Elephants at 11am

The one-hour public visiting time at the Sheldrick elephant orphanage in Nairobi National Park — when baby elephants are brought out for their midday milk, interact with visitors at arm’s length, and the keepers explain each calf’s rescue story — is the finest animal encounter available in Nairobi and one of the most affecting wildlife experiences in Kenya. The 11:00am session runs daily. Sense of Adventure includes this in every Nairobi day for all guests, whether they have children or not.

3

Giraffe Centre Karen — Face-Height Feeding

The African Fund for Endangered Wildlife Giraffe Centre in Karen allows visitors to feed Rothschild’s giraffes from a raised platform or from the ground — the giraffe’s tongue taking a pellet from your palm at arm’s length. Opens daily from 09:00; 45 minutes to 1 hour is sufficient. Located 15 minutes from Wilson Airport, making it a natural pre-safari addition for guests departing on afternoon charters. Sense of Adventure includes it in all morning Nairobi programmes.

4

The Karen Blixen Museum — Out of Africa Country

The Karen Blixen Museum occupies the farmhouse of the author of Out of Africa — the Danish baroness who lived here in the 1920s and whose account of colonial Kenya remains one of the finest pieces of writing the continent has inspired. The house is maintained largely as it was during her residence, with the Ngong Hills visible in the distance exactly as she described them. Located in Karen (the suburb named after her), adjacent to the Giraffe Centre, and makeable in a combined 2-hour morning circuit.

5

Nairobi Food — The City’s Serious Restaurant Culture

Nairobi has one of East Africa’s most sophisticated food scenes — a city of 4+ million with a substantial middle class, strong expat community, and a cuisine that pulls from Swahili, Indian, Lebanese, and global traditions. Carnivore restaurant (a Nairobi institution serving game meats for 40+ years), the Westlands Indian restaurants on Westlands Road, and the Karen village café culture all offer dining experiences that reward an evening or lunch in the city. Sense of Adventure recommends specific restaurants based on guest preference and dietary requirements.

6

Nairobi National Museum — Kenya’s Natural and Cultural History

The National Museum of Kenya in Museum Hill holds the finest natural history collection in East Africa: the comprehensive hominid fossil record from the Rift Valley (Kenya is where much of human evolutionary history was reconstructed), the Joy Adamson wildlife paintings, and permanent exhibitions on Kenyan peoples and ecology. The snake park adjacent to the museum is a separate attraction that children in particular find compelling. Two hours is sufficient for a focused visit; half a day for guests with genuine interest.

Frequently Asked Questions — Nairobi

Is Nairobi safe for tourists?

The tourist areas of Nairobi — Karen, Westlands, the national park, and the immediate hotel district — are safe for visitors exercising normal urban awareness. The city has specific areas with elevated crime risk that are not on any tourist itinerary. Sense of Adventure uses drivers and guides who know Nairobi well and positions all guests in safe, established hotel areas. None of our thousands of Nairobi guests have had a safety incident in the tourist areas.

How much time should I spend in Nairobi?

One day is ideal for first-time Kenya visitors who want the Sheldrick nursery, Giraffe Centre, and a restaurant evening. Two days allows the addition of Nairobi National Park for a half-day game drive. For guests on short connections (5–8 hours between flights), Sense of Adventure designs a tight 4-hour programme covering the essential wildlife experiences without requiring an overnight stay.

Where should I stay in Nairobi?

Karen and Westlands are Sense of Adventure’s recommended Nairobi areas. Karen (25 minutes from the airport, adjacent to the Giraffe Centre and the Sheldrick nursery) is quiet, leafy, and ideal for guests arriving late or departing early. Westlands and Gigiri are the main business and restaurant districts — better for guests wanting city energy. Sense of Adventure books both and advises based on your Nairobi schedule.
