For British travellers, Kenya holds a particular resonance that goes beyond the extraordinary wildlife. Kenya was British East Africa — the land of Karen Blixen, Isak Dinesen, and Out of Africa. The colonial-era farms of the Karen suburbs, the colonial-era polo clubs of the Rift Valley, the language (English, everywhere and effortlessly), the driving (left-hand side), the plug sockets (UK three-pin, throughout). Kenya is, in certain ways, the most comfortable African country for British visitors to navigate — and its safari product, which has been refined over more than a century of hosting British travellers, is extraordinarily well-suited to British tastes and expectations.
This guide covers everything a UK traveller needs to plan a Kenya safari in 2026: flights, visa, costs, the best itineraries from a London departure, and why Kenya consistently tops the list of recommended East Africa safari destinations for British visitors.

Flights from the UK to Kenya
The UK has excellent flight connections to Nairobi, with both direct and one-stop options from London and regional UK airports:
- London Heathrow direct to Nairobi (Jomo Kenyatta International): Kenya Airways operates daily non-stop flights from LHR to NBO — the most convenient option for most UK travellers. Flight time is approximately 8.5 hours. British Airways also operates the LHR-NBO route, typically with one stop but occasionally direct in peak season.
- Via Amsterdam (KLM): From London and multiple UK regional airports, KLM connects through Amsterdam Schiphol to Nairobi. A popular choice for travellers outside London, as KLM’s UK feeder network is excellent.
- Via Dubai (Emirates): Emirates connects multiple UK airports (LHR, LGW, MAN, BHX, GLA, NCE) through Dubai to Nairobi. The connection time in Dubai is typically 2–3 hours, making total journey time 11–13 hours.
- Via Doha (Qatar Airways): Qatar Airways connects London and Manchester through Doha to Nairobi with competitive pricing and high service standards.
- Via Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines): A budget-friendly option with connections from London, and increasingly from regional UK airports. Journey time is 10–12 hours depending on connection.
Return flight costs from UK to Nairobi: Economy class typically ranges from £500–£1,000 return depending on season and airline. Business class ranges from £2,500–£5,000 return. Booking 3–4 months ahead of travel dates secures the best economy fares. December and August command premium pricing — book 5–6 months ahead for those windows.
Do British Citizens Need a Visa for Kenya?
Yes. UK passport holders require a visa for Kenya, applied for online at evisa.go.ke. The Single Entry Tourist Visa costs USD $51 (approximately £40 at current exchange rates). Processing takes 2–5 business days — apply at least 2–3 weeks before travel. The application requires your passport details, a digital photo, return flight confirmation, and hotel/safari camp booking confirmation.
If your itinerary includes Tanzania and/or Uganda alongside Kenya, the East Africa Tourist Visa (USD $100) covers all three countries and represents excellent value for multi-country circuits.

Best Time to Visit for UK Holiday Schedules
Kenya’s safari seasons align well with UK holiday patterns:
- July–August (school summer holidays): Peak migration season in the Masai Mara — the most dramatic game viewing of the year. Coincides with the UK’s busiest travel period. Book accommodation 6–8 months ahead; prices at peak-season highs but the wildlife is extraordinary. This is our most popular window for UK family safari groups.
- October half-term: An excellent window. The migration is in its final Mara phase; post-migration game viewing is still superb. Prices below August peak. A 10-day half-term safari (Mara + Amboseli or Mara + coast) fits comfortably within a UK half-term break.
- December–January (Christmas and New Year): Green season in Kenya, with lush landscapes, strong predator activity, and a festive atmosphere at the top Mara lodges. Popular with UK families and couples combining safari with a New Year’s celebration. Book the lodges you want by September for December dates.
- February (February half-term): Green season excellence — lush landscapes, strong predator viewing, prices 20–30% below July-August peak, and significantly fewer vehicles in the parks. Our favourite window for value-focused UK travellers. Often available with 6–8 weeks’ notice, unlike August which needs 6 months.
- Easter: A popular Kenya window that tends to book up 3–4 months ahead. The long rains begin in April so late March/early April Easter can be excellent; a later Easter in mid-April may coincide with the onset of rain.

Nights 1–4: Masai Mara (4 nights, morning and afternoon game drives, optional balloon on morning 3). Fly to Amboseli. Nights 5–6: Amboseli (2 nights, elephants and Kilimanjaro). Fly to Nairobi. Night 7: Nairobi hotel. Fly home overnight. Total door-to-door: 10 nights.
14 nights — Kenya and Tanzania:
As above with the addition of 3 nights Serengeti and 2 nights Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania, plus 2 nights Zanzibar beach. Fly home from Zanzibar. This circuit is our most popular for UK travellers with two weeks available.
Currency and Money
Kenya uses the Kenyan Shilling (KES). British pounds can be exchanged at Nairobi airport and in the city. USD is widely accepted at safari camps and is the easiest currency for tips and incidental payments. Most UK debit and credit cards work well in Nairobi (Mastercard and Visa widely accepted); in remote safari areas, cash is necessary. Carry some USD in small denominations ($1, $5, $10) for tips. Current exchange: approximately KES 165 to GBP 1 (verify before travel).
Why UK Travellers Love Kenya
The combination of English as the official language, left-hand driving, familiar plug sockets, and a long-established safari industry that has been hosting British visitors for over a century makes Kenya uniquely comfortable for UK travellers — the logistics feel easier than in many other safari destinations. Add to this the extraordinary quality of the wildlife, the warmth of Kenyan hospitality, and the straightforward flight connections from London, and Kenya’s enduring popularity with British safari travellers makes complete sense. See our Kenya travel safety guide for reassurance on the safety picture for international visitors.
