Why Choose an Amboseli Safari?
Amboseli is the place for elephants and mountain views, and its open, flat landscape makes wildlife easy to see.
- Elephants: Amboseli’s elephants have been studied for decades by the Amboseli Trust for Elephants, and the park is known for big, relaxed herds and impressive tuskers.
- Kilimanjaro: Africa’s highest mountain rises just across the border in Tanzania and fills the southern sky on clear days.
- Swamps in a dry land: underground water from Kilimanjaro feeds green swamps that attract elephants, hippos, buffalo and birds all year.
- Easy access: Amboseli is close enough to Nairobi for a two-day trip and links easily with Tsavo and the coast.
Amboseli is also a UNESCO biosphere reserve, and the surrounding Maasai lands and conservancies are an important part of its wildlife story. Read more on the Kenya Wildlife Service website.

A Sample 2-Day Itinerary From Our Amboseli Safari Packages
This is how our most popular short trip usually runs. Most 2-day Amboseli safari packages follow the same simple rhythm.
- Day 1, morning: early pick-up from your Nairobi hotel or the airport and drive south through the Maasai plains.
- Day 1, midday: arrive at your camp or lodge for lunch and a rest during the heat of the day.
- Day 1, afternoon: game drive to the swamps as the elephants gather, with Kilimanjaro often appearing as the clouds lift.
- Day 2, sunrise: early game drive, the best time for clear mountain views and active predators.
- Day 2, late morning: breakfast, check out and drive back to Nairobi, arriving in the late afternoon.
If your flight leaves in the evening, you can usually go straight to the airport at the end of the trip. Longer Amboseli safari packages add a full day in the park or continue to Tsavo or the Masai Mara.
Best Time for Amboseli Safari Packages
You can visit Amboseli all year, but the dry seasons give the clearest views of Kilimanjaro and the easiest game viewing.
| Months | Season | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| January to February | Short dry season | Warm, clear mornings, elephants gathering at the swamps |
| March to May | Long rains | Green plains, more cloud on the mountain, lower prices |
| June to October | Long dry season | Dusty plains, excellent elephant viewing, clearest skies |
| November to December | Short rains | Green and fresh, afternoon showers, fewer visitors |
Even in the rainy months, clouds often lift at dawn. See Kenya weather by month.

What You Will See on Amboseli Safari Packages
Amboseli safari packages are all about elephants, but the park has much more to offer.
- Elephants: families and big bulls feeding in the swamps and crossing the dry lake bed.
- Plains game: zebras, wildebeest, giraffes, buffalo, impala and Grant’s gazelles.
- Predators: lions, cheetahs and spotted hyenas are present; sightings vary with the season.
- Hippos: in the swamps around Observation Hill.
- Birds: more than 400 species recorded, including pelicans, flamingos on the seasonal lake and many waterbirds.
- Gerenuk: a long-necked antelope that feeds standing on its hind legs.
Amboseli does not have rhinos or reliable leopard sightings, so we often pair it with the Masai Mara or Lake Nakuru to complete your wildlife list. See your chances of seeing the Big Five in Kenya.
How to Get to Amboseli
By road from Nairobi
The drive takes about four to five hours, usually via the Namanga road. It is the best-value way to travel and fits easily into our 2-day Amboseli safari packages.
By air
Scheduled light aircraft fly from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to the airstrip in Amboseli. Flying saves time on longer itineraries; remember the soft-bag limit of about 15 kg. See luggage limits on small aircraft.
From Mombasa and the coast
Amboseli can be reached from the coast via Tsavo, making it ideal for a safari added to a beach holiday. Our 4-day Tsavo and Amboseli safari starts and ends in Mombasa.
Where to Stay on Amboseli Safari Packages
Accommodation in and around Amboseli ranges from simple campsites to lodges inside the park and luxury camps in the surrounding conservancies.

- Just outside the gates: good-value tented camps, a short drive from the park.
- Private conservancies: exclusive camps on Maasai land with walking safaris, night drives and big Kilimanjaro views.

Combining Amboseli With Other Parks
Amboseli safari packages work brilliantly as part of a longer trip.
Amboseli and the Masai Mara
Kenya’s two most famous parks together give you elephants and Kilimanjaro, then big cats and, in season, the migration. Most guests travel via Lake Naivasha to break the drive.
Amboseli and Tsavo
Tsavo West and Tsavo East are a few hours away, with red-dusted elephants, lava flows and wide wild landscapes. This route links easily with the coast.
Amboseli safari packages with a beach finish
Finish with a few days on Diani Beach, a drive or short flight away. Our 8-day and 10-day packages include beach time. See combining a safari with a beach holiday.

Things to Do Beyond Game Drives
- Observation Hill: climb to a viewpoint over the swamps and plains for wide views and a stretch of the legs.
- Maasai village visit: learn about Maasai life and culture in the communities around the park.
- Walking safaris: available in some private conservancies outside the park with an armed guide.
- Photography: golden light, dust and elephants make Amboseli a favourite with photographers.
Tips for Getting the Most From Amboseli Safari Packages
- Go early: the first two hours after sunrise give the best light and the clearest views of Kilimanjaro.
- Spend time at the swamps: elephants walk in from the dry plains to drink and feed, often in the late morning.
- Pack for dust: a light scarf and lens cloth help in the dry season.
- Respect the herds: give elephants space, especially mothers with young calves; your guide knows the signs.
