Tsavo & Amboseli Safari from Mombasa (4 Days)

4 Days

A Tsavo and Amboseli safari is the most popular road safari for guests staying on the Kenyan coast. In four days you cross Tsavo East, see Mzima Springs in Tsavo West and reach Amboseli, where elephant herds walk beneath Mount Kilimanjaro. We collect you from your hotel in Diani, Mombasa or the north coast and bring you back on day four, so you can keep your beach room. The price starts from USD 1,050 per adult sharing.

Why Choose a Tsavo and Amboseli Safari From the Coast?

Many beach holidaymakers want to see wildlife but do not want to leave the coast for a week. A Tsavo and Amboseli safari solves that. You travel in a private 4×4, visit three of Kenya’s best-known parks, and return to your hotel for the rest of your beach holiday. You do not need to move your bags or rebook your room.

The route is also a good introduction to the variety of Kenya’s wildlife. Tsavo is vast and wild, with red-dust elephants. Mzima Springs gives you a close look at hippos and crocodiles. Amboseli is open and flat, with Kilimanjaro towering over herds of elephants.

  • Three parks in four days: Tsavo East, Tsavo West and Amboseli.
  • Red elephants: Tsavo’s elephants are coated in red dust from the soil.
  • Mzima Springs: an underwater viewing chamber for hippos and crocodiles.
  • Kilimanjaro views: elephants beneath Africa’s highest mountain.
  • Hotel pick-up and return: guides who speak German or Italian are available on request.

Day-by-Day Tsavo and Amboseli Safari Itinerary

Days 1 and 2: Tsavo East and Tsavo West

Day 1, coast to Tsavo East. You are collected early from your coast hotel and driven to Tsavo East for a game drive, with lunch in the park. You spend the night at a lodge in or near Tsavo. Tsavo East is a big, open park, and the red elephants are the highlight. Our Tsavo safari guide explains the two parks in more detail.

Day 2, Tsavo West and Mzima Springs. Cross into Tsavo West to visit Mzima Springs, where an underwater viewing chamber lets you watch hippos and crocodiles. You then continue to Amboseli for an evening game drive, as the light softens and the herds move toward the water.

Days 3 and 4: Amboseli and the return to the coast

Day 3, a full day in Amboseli. Take morning and afternoon game drives, with the best chance of Kilimanjaro views at dawn. Visit Observation Hill for a view over the swamps and the elephant herds. Read more on our Amboseli safari page.

Day 4, back to the coast. Start with a sunrise game drive, then have breakfast and drive back to your coast hotel, arriving in the evening.

Wildlife on a Tsavo and Amboseli Safari

Tsavo: red elephants and lions

Tsavo’s elephants take dust baths in the red soil and turn the colour of the earth. The parks are also home to lions, buffalo, giraffes, zebras and many birds. The landscape is wild and wide, and it feels very different from the smaller parks.

Mzima Springs: hippos and crocodiles

The springs are an oasis in dry country, and the underwater chamber lets you see hippos and crocodiles from below the surface. Read our guide to Mzima Springs in Tsavo West for more.

Amboseli: elephants under Kilimanjaro

Amboseli is famous for its large elephant herds and the mountain behind them. The swamps attract hippos, buffalo and many birds, and the open plains make the animals easy to see.

Who Is the Tsavo and Amboseli Safari For?

This trip is designed for travellers who are already on the coast and want a taste of Kenya’s inland parks. It is popular with beach holidaymakers in Diani, Mombasa and Watamu, many of them from Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Austria and the UK. Because we collect you from your hotel and return you there, it is one of the easiest ways to add a safari to a beach holiday.

  • Beach holidaymakers: keep your hotel room and take a soft bag for three nights.
  • Couples and friends: a private vehicle and a guide who can adapt the pace.
  • Families: lodges with pools and family rooms, and breaks whenever children need them.
  • Language needs: guides who speak German or Italian are available on request.
  • Photographers: three very different landscapes in four days.

It is a road safari, so be prepared for some long days in the vehicle on the first and last days. The reward is a lot of wildlife and scenery for a modest price, and many guests tell us the Tsavo and Amboseli safari was the highlight of their coast holiday. If you would like a shorter or longer version, ask us for a quote that suits your dates.

We recommend packing for dust and sun, wearing comfortable clothes and sitting by the window when the light is good. Your guide will tell you when to be ready each morning, and you can always ask for a rest stop.

Accommodation and Pace

You stay in lodges in or near the parks, with full-board meals while on safari. Lodges along the route have pools and family rooms. The longest drives are on day one and day four, about 3 to 5 hours each, broken up with game viewing in the parks, while the middle days have shorter transfers. Most coast hotels store luggage for safari guests, so you only need a soft bag for three nights. For examples, browse our Kenya lodges and camps.

Best Time for a Tsavo and Amboseli Safari

You can travel all year. The dry months are the best for wildlife and for seeing Kilimanjaro, which is usually clearest at dawn and dusk. It can hide in cloud, so we plan your Amboseli drives for the best light.

  • January to March: hot and dry, with good game viewing and clear views.
  • April to May: the long rains bring green scenery, lower prices and some muddy roads.
  • June to October: the dry season, and the best time for wildlife and mountain views.
  • November to December: short rains and lush landscapes, with busy festive weeks.

If you prefer to compare the parks, our guide to Tsavo vs Amboseli explains the differences.

Photography on a Tsavo and Amboseli Safari

This route is a photographer’s favourite because the scenery changes every day. Red elephants stand out against green bush in Tsavo, and Amboseli offers the classic image of elephants beneath Kilimanjaro. A lens of 200 to 400 mm suits most wildlife, while a wide lens helps with the mountain and the big skies. Dawn and dusk give the clearest views of Kilimanjaro, so plan to be out early. Bring a dust cover, because the roads and parks can be dusty.

What to Pack

  • Lightweight neutral clothing in khaki, olive or beige, plus a warm layer for early mornings in Amboseli.
  • A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen.
  • Binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens, spare batteries and memory cards.
  • Closed, comfortable shoes and a dust scarf.
  • Insect repellent and any malaria prevention your doctor recommends.
  • A soft bag for three nights, since your main luggage can stay at the coast hotel.

Visas, Health and Safety

Most visitors need a Kenya eTA before arrival, so apply online ahead of your trip and check the current rules for your nationality. Malaria is present in much of Kenya, including the coast and the Tsavo area, so speak to your doctor about prevention. Take out travel insurance that covers medical evacuation. Our guides check conditions daily and adjust plans if needed. For official information, see the Kenya Wildlife Service and Magical Kenya.
