Family Safari & Beach – Tsavo, Amboseli & Diani (8 Days)

8 Days

A Kenya family safari and beach holiday gives children the best of both worlds in one eight-day trip. You start in Amboseli, where elephant families walk beneath Mount Kilimanjaro, continue through Tsavo West and Mzima Springs, and finish with four nights at Diani Beach, one of Africa’s most beautiful beaches. The route avoids long backtracking, you fly home from Mombasa, and the price starts from USD 1,950 per adult sharing.

Amboseli’s elephants are relaxed around vehicles, which makes them ideal for first-time young safari-goers.

Why Choose a Kenya Family Safari and Beach Holiday?

Children get the excitement of a safari and the downtime of a beach in one trip. Splitting the time keeps everyone happy and makes long-haul travel worthwhile. Parents get a break from early starts once the safari ends, and children burn off energy in the pool, on the sand and in the sea.

We design the trip around how families actually travel. Drives are kept to a sensible length, lodges are chosen for their pools and family rooms, and the beach hotel has a kids’ club. The itinerary runs in one direction, from the parks down to the coast, so there is no wasted time doubling back.

  • Elephants and Kilimanjaro: a classic Amboseli view that children remember.
  • Mzima Springs: an underwater viewing chamber where children can watch hippos.
  • Four nights on Diani Beach: time to swim, snorkel and relax.
  • Family comforts: family rooms, pools and a kids’ club.
  • No backtracking: drive from the parks to the coast and fly home from Mombasa.

Day-by-Day Kenya Family Safari and Beach Itinerary

Days 1 to 3: Amboseli and Tsavo West

Day 1, Nairobi to Amboseli. Drive south to Amboseli, arriving for lunch at your family-friendly lodge. In the afternoon you go out on a game drive among the elephant herds. Read more on our Amboseli safari page.

Day 2, a full day in Amboseli. Start with a sunrise game drive for the best Kilimanjaro views, then return for a break at the pool. An afternoon drive along the swamps follows. Splitting the day this way keeps children fresh and gives them time to play.

Day 3, Amboseli to Tsavo West. Drive to Tsavo West and visit Mzima Springs, where children can watch hippos from an underwater viewing chamber. Spend the night in Tsavo. Our Tsavo safari guide explains the two parks.

Days 4 to 8: Tsavo East and Diani Beach

Day 4, Tsavo to Diani Beach. A morning game drive in Tsavo East, then drive down to Diani Beach, arriving in the late afternoon. The long drive is the last of the trip, and the reward is the beach.

Day 5, Diani Beach. A free day on the beach, in the pool or at the kids’ club.

Day 6, Kisite dolphin tour. A family dhow trip to Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park for snorkelling and dolphins, with lunch on Wasini Island.

Day 7, Diani Beach. A free day, with an optional trip to Shimba Hills or a visit to Colobus Conservation.

Day 8, departure. Transfer to Mombasa airport for your flight home.

Wildlife on a Kenya Family Safari and Beach Holiday

The safari part of the trip is short, so every drive counts. Here is what children and parents can look for in each place.

Amboseli: elephants and Kilimanjaro

Amboseli is famous for its elephant herds, and the open landscape makes them easy to spot. On a clear morning Mount Kilimanjaro rises behind them. The swamps attract hippos, buffalo and many birds, so there is plenty to see even on short drives.

Tsavo: red elephants and Mzima Springs

Tsavo’s elephants are coated in red dust from the soil, which children find fascinating. At Mzima Springs, the underwater viewing chamber lets children watch hippos beneath the surface, which is often a highlight of the trip.

Marine life at Kisite-Mpunguti

The dhow trip to Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park offers dolphins and snorkelling, and lunch on Wasini Island finishes the day. Our beach experiences page has more ideas for the coast.

Accommodation and Pace for Families

You spend three nights in safari lodges on a full-board basis, chosen for their pools and family rooms, and four nights at a Diani beach hotel on a half-board basis with a kids’ club. The longest drive is from Tsavo to Diani, about 4 to 5 hours with stops. Other drives are 3 to 4 hours, broken up by game viewing. See our Kenya family safari packages for more family routes, or browse Kenya lodges and camps for the style of accommodation we use.

Best Time for a Kenya Family Safari and Beach Holiday

School holidays are the usual choice, and the route works well at Easter, in summer and at October half-term. The parks are good in the dry months, and the coast is warm all year.

  • January to March: hot, dry weather with good game viewing and warm sea.
  • April to May: the long rains. Landscapes are green and prices are lower, but some roads are muddy.
  • June to October: the dry season, with the easiest game viewing and good beach weather.
  • November to December: short rains, lush scenery and busy festive weeks.

How Much Does a Kenya Family Safari and Beach Holiday Cost?

This Kenya family safari and beach holiday starts from USD 1,950 per adult sharing. The final price depends on the season, the accommodation, the number and ages of children and your group size. Families can speak to us about child rates when they send an enquiry. For a wider budgeting guide, see how much an African safari costs.

What Is Included and Not Included

  • Private 4×4 safari vehicle and driver-guide
  • 3 nights in safari lodges, full board
  • 4 nights at a Diani beach hotel, half board
  • Park and marine park fees
  • Kisite dolphin tour with lunch
  • Transfers to Mombasa airport

Not included: international flights, the Kenya eTA (from USD 30 per person, depending on the application type) and Kenya’s mandatory travel health insurance (about USD 44 plus small fees per traveller), travel insurance, tips and gratuities, drinks, personal expenses and optional activities not listed as included.

Photography on a Family Safari

Family photographs do not need a heavy kit. A zoom lens of 70 to 300 mm covers elephants at Amboseli, and a phone is enough for the beach. Early mornings give the best light and the clearest Kilimanjaro views, so plan the sunrise drive on Day 2. Let children take pictures too: an inexpensive camera keeps them engaged between sightings. Your driver-guide will position the vehicle so everyone has a window view.

What to Pack for a Family Safari and Beach Holiday

  • Lightweight neutral clothing in khaki, olive or beige for safari, plus a warm layer for early mornings.
  • Swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen and sun hats for the coast.
  • Child-sized binoculars and a camera for the children.
  • Closed, comfortable shoes and sandals.
  • Insect repellent and any malaria prevention your doctor recommends.
  • Snacks, books and games for the longer drives.
  • Any regular medication for the children.

Food and Dietary Notes

Vegetarian and Jain meals can be requested in advance for both the safari lodges and your Diani beach hotel, and we confirm with each property what it can prepare before you pay. Kitchens on this route cook for guests from many countries, so vegetarian food is an everyday request, although safari lodge menus are simpler than a beach resort buffet and we never promise a specific menu. When you book, tell us each family member’s needs in plain words: eggs and dairy or not, Jain rules such as no onion, garlic or root vegetables, vegan or gluten-free needs, and any allergies listed separately. If the children prefer plain food, say so and we will pass it on with the rest of your notes. Our guide to a vegetarian safari in Kenya covers camp meals, snacks to pack and eating out.

Visas, Entry and Health

Most visitors, children included, need an approved Kenya eTA before arrival; apply only on the official portal at etakenya.go.ke. Since October 2026 the eTA includes Kenya’s mandatory Kenyan Government travel health insurance (about USD 44 plus small fees per traveller, valid 90 days), and your own travel insurance does not replace it; see our Kenya mandatory travel insurance guide. Speak to your doctor or travel clinic about vaccinations and malaria tablets for Kenya’s coast and safari areas, ideally 6 to 8 weeks before travel, and keep your own travel insurance for wider cover. Before you book, we talk you through your route and current travel conditions. For official information, see Magical Kenya and the Kenya Wildlife Service.

Kenya Family Safari and Beach FAQs

Why choose a Kenya family safari and beach holiday?

Children get the excitement of a safari and the downtime of a beach in one trip. Splitting the time keeps everyone happy and makes long-haul travel worthwhile.

The longest drive is from Tsavo to Diani, about 4 to 5 hours with stops. Other drives are 3 to 4 hours, broken up by game viewing.

Is Diani Beach good for children?

Yes. Diani has calm, shallow water inside the reef at low tide, many family hotels with kids’ clubs, and activities like snorkelling and dhow trips.

Can we fly home from Mombasa?

Yes. Several airlines connect Mombasa with Europe via Nairobi, Doha, Dubai or Istanbul, and some seasonal flights fly direct to European cities.

What vaccinations do children need?

Speak to your doctor or travel clinic about vaccinations and malaria tablets for Kenya’s coast and safari areas, ideally 6 to 8 weeks before travel.

Who Is This Kenya Family Safari and Beach Holiday For?

The route is aimed at families from the UK, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Poland, who often travel at Easter, in summer and at October half-term. It works for children who are curious about animals, and for parents who want a relaxed second half to the holiday. The drives are short enough for most children, and the pools and beach give everyone plenty of downtime.

It is not a high-adrenaline itinerary. If your family wants a longer, wildlife-focused trip, you can compare it with our other family safari packages, or add extra nights in the parks.

Tips for a Kenya Family Safari and Beach Holiday with Children

A little preparation makes a big difference to how children enjoy a safari. Talk about the animals before you go, and let children keep a simple list of what they see. Pack snacks, water and small activities for the drives, and plan the longest travel days around nap times and meals where you can.

  • Explain the safari rules in advance: stay seated, speak quietly and never lean out of the vehicle.
  • Use the midday break at the lodge pool, when animals are resting and children need a rest too.
  • Choose the sunrise game drive on the day with the best Kilimanjaro views, and let younger children skip it if they are tired.
  • Use high-factor sunscreen and hats from the first day, because the equatorial sun is strong.
  • On the coast, keep children within the calm water inside the reef and listen to the hotel’s guidance on tides.

Practical Information for Your Kenya Family Safari and Beach Holiday

Money and tipping

Kenya’s currency is the Kenyan shilling, but US dollars are accepted at many lodges and hotels. Tips are not included in the price. It is customary to tip your driver-guide, lodge staff and hotel staff, and we can suggest amounts before you travel.

Electricity and connectivity

Kenya uses the three-pin UK-style plug at 240 volts. Bring an adaptor and a power bank for tablets and cameras. Mobile coverage is good in towns and along the coast, and patchy in the parks.

Health and sun safety

Drink bottled water, use insect repellent at dawn and dusk and keep children well covered in the sun. Speak to your doctor about malaria tablets and routine vaccinations well before you travel. Pack a small first-aid kit with plasters, antiseptic and any regular medication.

Language and time

English and Swahili are the main languages, and Kenya is three hours ahead of UTC. Children enjoy learning a few Swahili words, such as jambo for hello and asante for thank you, and your guide will happily teach them.
