Why Combine Kenya and Tanzania on One Safari?
Kenya and Tanzania share the same great ecosystem, so combining them gives you more variety, more wildlife and more chances to see the Great Migration than either country alone.
- Follow the migration: the herds move between the Serengeti and the Masai Mara, so two countries let you be where they are.
- Different landscapes: the rolling Mara plains, the endless Serengeti and the volcanic Ngorongoro Crater.
- Different experiences: Kenya’s compact reserve and private conservancies, Tanzania’s vast wilderness.
- Easy beach finish: Zanzibar is a short flight from the Serengeti or Arusha.
Kenya and Tanzania safari packages suit travellers who want the full East African story in one trip. If you are deciding between the two, read our comparison of Kenya vs Tanzania safari costs and our Kenya and Tanzania safari guide.
Many guests also find that a two-country trip feels like two holidays in one. Kenya gives you intimate conservancy camps and easy access from Nairobi, while Tanzania gives you vast horizons and the drama of the crater. Ending on Zanzibar adds a third, slower chapter by the sea.

How Kenya and Tanzania Safari Packages Cross the Border
There is no open tourist crossing directly between the Masai Mara and the Serengeti, so Kenya and Tanzania safari packages either fly between the parks or drive through an official border post.
Flying between Kenya and Tanzania
Many itineraries fly from Nairobi or the Mara to Kilimanjaro or Arusha, then on to the Serengeti by light aircraft. Flying is faster and lets you spend more of your safari watching wildlife. Light aircraft have a soft-bag limit of about 15 kg. See luggage limits on small aircraft.
Driving through Namanga
The Namanga border on the Nairobi to Arusha road is the most common road crossing. It takes about five to six hours from Nairobi to Arusha, including the border formalities, and often links Amboseli with northern Tanzania.
Changing vehicles at the border
Kenyan and Tanzanian safari vehicles usually stay in their own countries, so you swap to a Tanzanian vehicle and guide at the border or airport. We arrange the hand-over so you are met on the other side.
Visas and Paperwork for Kenya and Tanzania
You need permission to enter both countries, so allow time to arrange paperwork before you travel.
- Kenya: most visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorisation, applied for online through the official Kenya eTA portal.
- Tanzania: most visitors need a Tanzania visa, which can be applied for online through the official immigration service.
- Returning to Kenya: if your trip goes back into Kenya after Tanzania, check whether your eTA covers re-entry; we confirm this when we plan your route.
- Yellow fever: Tanzania may ask for a yellow fever certificate if you arrive from Kenya, so check the current rules before you travel.
- Zanzibar: visitors to Zanzibar must buy the island’s own inbound travel insurance.

When to Book Kenya and Tanzania Safari Packages
The best time for most Kenya and Tanzania safari packages is from July to October, when the migration herds are in the northern Serengeti and the Masai Mara.
| Months | Kenya | Tanzania |
|---|---|---|
| January to March | Dry, excellent predator viewing | Calving season in the southern Serengeti |
| April to May | Long rains, lowest prices | Long rains, some camps close |
| June | Herds approaching the Mara | Grumeti River crossings in the western Serengeti |
| July to October | Great Migration in the Masai Mara | Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti |
| November to December | Short rains, quiet and green | Herds moving back south |
For a calving safari from January to March, we adjust the route to spend more time in the southern Serengeti. See Masai Mara or Serengeti by month.
A Sample 10-Day Route From Our Kenya and Tanzania Safari Packages
This is how our classic 10-day route usually flows. Most Kenya and Tanzania safari packages follow a similar shape, with more or fewer nights in each park.
- Day 1: arrive in Nairobi, meet your guide and rest at a city hotel.
- Days 2 to 4: the Masai Mara, with sunrise and full-day game drives and, in season, time at the Mara River.
- Day 5: travel to Tanzania by air or through the border, and continue to the Serengeti.
- Days 6 to 8: the Serengeti, following the herds and the big cats across the plains.
- Day 9: descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a full day of game viewing.
- Day 10: drive to Arusha or Kilimanjaro Airport for your flight home, or fly to Zanzibar.
Kenya and Tanzania safari packages can also run in the opposite direction, starting in Arusha and ending in Nairobi, which can be easier for some international flights.
Tips for a Smooth Two-Country Safari
- Book flights last: confirm your route and camps first, then book international flights into Nairobi and out of Kilimanjaro or Zanzibar.
- Pack soft bags: most Kenya and Tanzania safari packages include at least one light-aircraft flight.
- Carry US dollars: small notes are useful for tips, visas and extras in both countries.
- Plan your rest: add a night in Nairobi or Arusha if your international flight arrives late.
- Keep documents together: passport, eTA, Tanzania visa, yellow fever card and insurance details.
How Much Do Kenya and Tanzania Safari Packages Cost?
Kenya and Tanzania safari packages start from about USD 3,500 per person for 10 days in mid-range camps and rise to USD 4,600 or more for longer or higher-end trips. Tanzania’s park and concession fees are generally higher than Kenya’s, and internal flights add to the cost.
| Cost item | What affects it |
|---|---|
| Park fees | Tanzania’s parks and the Ngorongoro Crater charge more than most Kenyan parks |
| Accommodation | Camping, mid-range lodges or luxury tented camps |
| Flights | Cross-border and light-aircraft flights save time but add cost |
| Season | July to October is peak season on both sides of the border |
| Group size | Private vehicles cost less per person for groups of four or more |
