A 2 day Amboseli safari is the best short safari from Nairobi when you want elephants and Mount Kilimanjaro in one trip. Amboseli National Park is about 240 km south of the capital, a drive of roughly four to five hours, and it is famous for big-tusked elephants walking across open plains beneath Africa’s highest mountain. You travel in a private 4×4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, spend a night in the park and enjoy two game drives, with prices from USD 520 per adult sharing.

Why Choose a 2 Day Amboseli Safari?
Amboseli is one of Kenya’s most photogenic parks, and it is close enough to Nairobi to be done as a short break. Staying overnight makes all the difference compared with a day trip. You get an afternoon game drive, a night in the bush and an early-morning drive, when Kilimanjaro is most often clear of cloud and the animals are most active.
It is an ideal add-on before or after a beach holiday or a business trip, and it suits anyone who wants a real safari without taking a week off. If you have more time, you can simply add a night, which allows a slower pace and a full day on the plains.
- Elephants: Amboseli’s herds are among the best known in Africa and are seen on almost every drive.
- Kilimanjaro: sunrise views of the world’s tallest free-standing mountain, in the right conditions.
- Two game drives and more: an afternoon drive, an early drive and a last drive before you leave.
- Easy logistics: pick-up in Nairobi and a private vehicle with a window seat for every guest.
- Flexible: easy to combine with Tsavo or the coast.

2 Day Amboseli Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi to Amboseli
Your driver-guide picks you up in Nairobi in the morning, and you drive south towards the Tanzanian border. The road passes Maasai farmland and open rangeland, and you often see livestock, giraffes and zebras beside the road as you approach the park. You arrive at your lodge or tented camp in time for lunch and a short rest.
In the afternoon you set out on your first game drive, around the swamps where elephants, hippos and buffalo gather. Amboseli is fed by water that drains from Kilimanjaro, so the swamps stay green even when the plains are dry, and this is where the biggest herds feed in the afternoon. You return to camp at dusk for dinner and a night in the bush.
Day 2: Sunrise game drive and return to Nairobi
You rise early for a game drive with the best chance of a clear view of Kilimanjaro. In the first light the mountain often stands out sharply, and cloud tends to gather later in the day. After the drive you return to camp for breakfast, then take a last drive before heading back to Nairobi. You arrive in the late afternoon, in time for an evening flight in many cases, though it is wise to confirm your departure time with us when you book.

Wildlife on a 2 Day Amboseli Safari
Amboseli is small compared with the Mara or Tsavo, which means you cover its best areas quickly. Elephants are the headline, but there is much more to see.
Amboseli’s elephants
Amboseli is known for large, relaxed elephant herds, including old bulls with impressive tusks. They wade into the swamps to feed on reeds and walk across the dusty plains in family groups, with Kilimanjaro in the background. Because the park is open and flat, they are easy to watch and photograph, and they are seen on almost every drive.
Other wildlife and birds
Lions are seen regularly, along with cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes and zebras. Hippos wallow in the swamps, and buffalo and wildebeest graze on the plains. Birdlife is excellent, especially around the water, where you may see pelicans, herons, storks and many kinds of waders. Observation Hill gives a wide view over the swamps and is a good place to understand the layout of the park.
Seeing Kilimanjaro on a 2 Day Amboseli Safari
Kilimanjaro lies across the border in Tanzania, but Amboseli has the finest view of it from Kenya. The mountain is clearest early in the morning and late in the afternoon, especially in the dry months. It often hides in cloud at midday and during the rains, so a clear view cannot be guaranteed. A night in the park gives you the best chance, because you see the mountain at sunset and again at dawn.
For more about the park itself, read our Amboseli safari guide.
Best Time for a 2 Day Amboseli Safari
The trip runs all year, and the best months are June to October and January to February. In the dry season animals concentrate around the swamps and Kilimanjaro is more often visible.
- June to October: dry, dusty and excellent for wildlife, with the clearest views of Kilimanjaro.
- January to February: hot and dry, with good game viewing and fewer visitors.
- March to May: the long rains bring green landscapes, lower prices and more cloud over the mountain.
- November to December: short rains, fresh scenery and good birding.
How Much Does a 2 Day Amboseli Safari Cost?

Because you travel in a private vehicle, the cost per person falls as more guests share it. All park and reserve entry fees are included. Getting to Amboseli from Nairobi
Amboseli is about 240 km from Nairobi, a drive of roughly four to five hours depending on traffic and road conditions. Most of this safari is by road, so you see the countryside on the way and can stop for photographs. If you prefer to save time, you can also fly to Amboseli in about 45 minutes, which leaves more of each day for game drives. Ask us about flights if time is tight.
Our Kenya safari from Nairobi page lists more trips that start in the capital, and you can also explore a private Kenya safari if you want a fully tailored itinerary.
Who Is a 2 Day Amboseli Safari For?
This trip is for short-stay travellers who want a genuine safari without a long commitment. It is popular with visitors from the UK, Germany, France and the Netherlands who are passing through Nairobi, and with anyone who wants a quick break before or after a beach holiday. Photographers enjoy it too, because Amboseli’s open plains and the mountain behind them are a rare combination.
If you have more time, consider a longer route. Our Kenya highlights safari covers several regions, and many guests continue from Amboseli to Tsavo West and on to Diani Beach. You can read more on our Tsavo safari page, or ask us to turn this trip into a safari-and-beach holiday.
Photography on a 2 Day Amboseli Safari
Amboseli rewards photographers. Early morning light is soft and the mountain is at its clearest, so plan your first frames for sunrise. A lens of 200 to 400 mm suits most wildlife, while a wide lens helps you include Kilimanjaro with the elephants in the foreground. Dust can be an issue in the dry season, so carry a cloth and keep your camera in a bag between stops. Your driver-guide will position the vehicle for the light and the background, and the pop-up roof gives you a steady, raised position for shooting.
What to Pack for a 2 Day Amboseli Safari
- Lightweight clothes in neutral colours, plus a warm layer for the early morning drive.
- A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen.
- A scarf or buff for dust in the dry season.
- Closed, comfortable shoes.
- Binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens, spare batteries and memory cards.
- Insect repellent and any malaria prevention advised by your doctor.
- A small overnight bag, since you leave the rest of your luggage in Nairobi.
Visas, Health and Safety
Most visitors need a Kenya eTA before arrival, so apply online ahead of your trip and check the latest rules for your nationality. Malaria is present in parts of Kenya, so speak to your doctor about prevention, and take out travel insurance that covers medical evacuation. Your driver-guide is experienced and will brief you on safety in the park. For official information, visit the Kenya Wildlife Service and Magical Kenya.
