Our Kenya family safari packages are built around children: short drives, family rooms, pools and guides who know how to keep young eyes on the wildlife. They start from USD 780 per person for 4 days at Lake Naivasha and go up to 8-day safari-and-beach holidays and fly-in trips for three generations.
We are a licensed safari company based in Nairobi, and we plan many family trips every year, from toddlers on their first game drive to teenagers who want to walk with Maasai guides. This page compares all our Kenya family safari packages and answers the questions parents ask most: what age is right, which parks suit children, how much it costs and how to keep everyone safe and happy.

Why Kenya Is Great for a Family Safari
Kenya is one of the easiest places in Africa to take children on safari. Distances can be kept short, the wildlife is plentiful and many camps welcome families.
- Wildlife close to Nairobi: baby elephants, giraffes and Nairobi National Park are all within easy reach of the city.
- Short drives: Lake Naivasha is about two hours from Nairobi, and light aircraft reach the Masai Mara in under an hour.
- Activities beyond drives: boat rides, cycling, bush walks with guides and visits to Maasai communities.
- Beach to finish: Diani and Watamu are perfect for a relaxed end to the trip.
- Learning on the go: children come home knowing about animals, cultures and conservation in a way no classroom can match.
Every one of our Kenya family safari packages runs in a private vehicle, so you never share with strangers and can change the plan whenever you need to.

What Age Is Best for a Family Safari?
Children of any age can enjoy Kenya, but the experience changes with age. Here is what we usually recommend.
| Age | What works best | Things to know |
|---|---|---|
| Under 6 | Short drives, Nairobi day trips, Lake Naivasha, beach | Some camps and activities have minimum ages; private vehicles are best |
| 6 to 11 | Masai Mara, Amboseli, Ol Pejeta, boat rides | The ideal age for a first proper safari |
| 12 to 17 | Bush walks, cycling, conservation visits, hikes | Teenagers love the adventure activities |
| Grandparents | Fly-in safaris, comfortable lodges | Short flights reduce time on bumpy roads |
Read more in our guides to safari minimum ages for children and safaris with babies and toddlers. Rules vary by camp, so we always check before booking.

Best Parks for Kenya Family Safari Packages
Some parks suit families better than others. These are the ones we use most in our Kenya family safari packages.
Lake Naivasha and Hell’s Gate
Only a couple of hours from Nairobi, with boat rides among hippos, walks on Crescent Island and cycling past zebras in Hell’s Gate. Perfect for younger children.
The Masai Mara
Kenya’s most famous reserve, with lions, cheetahs, elephants and, from July to October, the Great Migration. Read our Masai Mara family safari guide.
Amboseli
Big elephant families beneath Mount Kilimanjaro, on flat, open plains where animals are easy to spot. See Amboseli safari packages.
Ol Pejeta Conservancy
Rhinos, a chimpanzee sanctuary and the last two northern white rhinos make this a great place for children to learn about conservation.
Tsavo and the coast
Tsavo’s red elephants are a few hours’ drive from Diani, so families staying on the coast can add an easy two or three-day safari.
How to Choose Between Our Kenya Family Safari Packages
The right trip depends on your children’s ages, how long you have and whether you want a beach finish. This quick guide helps you narrow down our Kenya family safari packages.
Kenya family safari packages for young children
If your children are under eight, start with the 4-day Lake Naivasha trip or the 5-day Kenya Family Safari. Drives are short, there is plenty to do outside the vehicle, and you can add a few nights on the beach. These Kenya family safari packages are also the best value for a first trip to Africa.
Safari and beach for mixed ages
The 8-day Family Safari and Beach suits families with a mix of ages. Parents enjoy the wildlife in Tsavo and Amboseli, then everyone relaxes on Diani’s white sand, with snorkelling and dhow trips for older children.
Fly-in and luxury trips for bigger groups
Travelling with grandparents, or want more comfort? Our multigenerational fly-in safari and Family Luxury Safari use short flights, private guides and spacious family tents, so everyone travels at their own pace.
Two countries for older children
Teenagers who have done a safari before often love the 14-day Kenya, Tanzania and Zanzibar holiday, with the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater added to the Masai Mara.
All our Kenya family safari packages can be adjusted, so if none fits exactly, tell us what you need and we will design one around your family.
Kenya Family Safari Packages in the School Holidays
Most families travel during school holidays, and that is when Kenya family safari packages fill up fastest. Booking early gives you the best choice of family tents and camps.
| Holiday | Months | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Summer holidays | July to August | Dry season and the Great Migration, the busiest time of year |
| Christmas and New Year | Late December to early January | Warm, green and festive, very busy on the coast |
| Easter | March or April | Long rains may start, quieter parks and better rates |
| Half-term | February and October | Good weather and fewer crowds |
For July, August and Christmas, we recommend booking six to twelve months ahead. See Kenya weather by month and our Great Migration safari page for details.

A Sample 5-Day Family Safari Itinerary
This is how our popular 5-day family trip usually runs. It keeps drives short and mixes wildlife with fun activities.
- Day 1: morning at the elephant orphanage and the Giraffe Centre in Nairobi, then drive to Lake Naivasha.
- Day 2: boat ride with hippos and birds, a walk on Crescent Island and an afternoon by the pool.
- Day 3: drive to the Masai Mara, lunch at camp and an afternoon game drive.
- Day 4: full day in the Mara with a picnic lunch, or two shorter drives with a rest in between.
- Day 5: early game drive, then drive or fly back to Nairobi.
We can add a beach stay, a night at Ol Pejeta or a hot air balloon flight for older children. Planning a short stop first? Read Nairobi layover with kids and Giraffe Centre or elephant orphanage.
Where Families Stay on Safari
We choose camps and lodges that welcome children and make life easy for parents.
- Family tents and rooms: interconnecting or two-bedroom units so everyone sleeps close together.
- Swimming pools: a big plus for the middle of the day when animals are resting.
- Children’s activities: some camps offer junior ranger programmes, tracking lessons and bead-making with Maasai hosts.
- Flexible meals: early dinners and simple food for fussy eaters.
- Fenced or guarded camps: askaris walk guests to their tents after dark.

Health and Safety on a Family Safari
Safety comes first on all our Kenya family safari packages. Our vehicles carry a first-aid kit and drinking water, our guides know each route well, and we plan every itinerary with medical help in mind.
- Malaria: much of Kenya is a malaria area. Talk to your doctor or travel clinic about prevention for each family member.
- Vaccinations: check routine and travel vaccines well before you go.
- Sun and water: pack high-factor sunscreen, hats and refillable bottles; we carry drinking water in the vehicle.
- Evacuation cover: all our safaris include AMREF Flying Doctors cover, and we recommend full travel insurance too.
- Travel documents: every child needs a Kenya eTA, applied for through the official Kenya eTA portal.
Before you travel, check your government’s advice, such as the UK travel advice for Kenya, and the CDC health information for Kenya.
Tips for a Happy Family Safari
- Keep it short: two-to-three-hour game drives are usually enough for younger children.
- Bring binoculars for everyone: children stay more involved when they have their own.
- Give them a job: a checklist of animals to spot or a camera to use keeps them excited.
- Pack snacks and layers: early mornings are cold and the afternoons hot.
- Build in downtime: pool time and rest afternoons stop everyone getting overtired.
These small habits make a big difference, and our guides on all Kenya family safari packages are used to adapting the day for children. Travelling with grandparents too? Read multigenerational family safaris in Kenya.
