Kenya is one of the world’s great birdwatching countries. With over 1,100 bird species recorded — approximately 10% of all the world’s bird species in a country the size of France — Kenya offers birdwatching experiences that rival any destination on earth. Whether you are a life-lister building a global tally, a photographer chasing the perfect image of a carmine bee-eater in flight, or simply a safari traveller who has discovered the extraordinary reward of looking up, Kenya will exceed every expectation.
What makes Kenya particularly compelling for birdwatching is the diversity of habitats — from the alkaline Rift Valley lakes (home to a million flamingos) to the montane rainforests of Mount Kenya (Albertine Rift endemics), the semi-arid north (specialist dry-country species), the Indian Ocean coastline (Malagasy and Asian migrants), and the open savannah of the Masai Mara (raptors, ground-nesting species, and an astonishing variety of resident birds). Birding Kenya means birding multiple distinct ecosystems on a single trip.

Kenya’s Top Birdwatching Destinations
Lake Nakuru National Park: One of Africa’s most visited birdwatching sites, and rightly so. Lake Nakuru hosts spectacular concentrations of flamingos (both lesser and greater), great white pelicans, and a remarkable diversity of waterbirds along the alkaline shoreline. Over 450 species recorded in the park and its surroundings. The yellow fever acacia woodland on the lake’s northern shore adds forest species including the superb starling, African fish eagle, and various weavers. A full day at Nakuru can yield 100+ species for an attentive birder.
Lake Naivasha: Lake Naivasha’s papyrus fringes, open water, and surrounding woodland support over 400 species, including the African fish eagle (Kenya’s national bird), great crested grebe, African jacana (walking impossibly on floating vegetation), and long-tailed widowbird. The boat trip on the lake is as much a birding experience as a hippo encounter — the lakeside vegetation is alive with herons, kingfishers, and bee-eaters.
Masai Mara National Reserve: Over 570 species recorded in the Mara ecosystem, including the grey crowned crane, kori bustard (Africa’s heaviest flying bird), secretary bird, martial eagle, bateleur eagle, and over 50 raptor species. The Mara River is exceptional for riparian species. The open plains are extraordinary for ground-nesting birds including ostriches and various lapwing species. Dedicated birding drives in the Mara — separate from the standard game drive schedule — can be arranged through our team.
Samburu National Reserve: Northern Kenya’s dry-country avifauna is among the most exciting in East Africa for birders. Samburu harbours specialist Somali-Maasai zone endemics including the Somali ostrich, vulturine guineafowl (the world’s most spectacular guineafowl), Somali bee-eater, golden-breasted starling, and the extraordinary D’Arnaud’s barbet. The Ewaso Nyiro River adds waterbird diversity. Samburu often produces 150+ species in 3 days for a motivated birder.
Arabuko-Sokoke Forest (Kenyan Coast): The largest remaining coastal forest in East Africa — 41,000 hectares of dry coastal forest north of Malindi — is one of Kenya’s most important birding sites. Six endemic bird species found nowhere else on earth breed in Arabuko-Sokoke, including the endangered Clarke’s weaver, Sokoke pipit, Sokoke scops owl, and the Amani sunbird. A dedicated birding visit to this forest, combined with a Watamu or Malindi coastal stay, is an essential addition for any serious birder’s Kenya itinerary.

Mount Kenya and Aberdare: The montane forests and moorlands of Mount Kenya harbour Albertine Rift endemic species including the Mackinder’s eagle-owl, Jackson’s francolin, and numerous sunbird species found nowhere else in the world. A birding walk through the Sirimon or Naro Moru forest zone can produce 60–80 species in a morning, including species impossible to find in the lowland parks.
Lake Bogoria and Lake Baringo: Lake Bogoria, north of Nakuru in the Rift Valley, sometimes hosts even larger flamingo concentrations than Nakuru, set against dramatic geothermal hot springs and steam vents. Lake Baringo — a freshwater lake further north — is one of Kenya’s premier birding sites, with over 470 species recorded and an extraordinary diversity of waterbirds, raptors, and bee-eaters accessible by boat on the lake itself. The Baringo-Bogoria combination is a dedicated birding destination that serious listers specifically travel to Kenya to visit.
Designing a Kenya Birdwatching Safari
A dedicated Kenya birding itinerary is quite different from a standard wildlife safari, though the two can be effectively combined. The key differences: birding drives start earlier (often 05:30 rather than 06:00 for the all-important dawn chorus), include more time on foot in appropriate habitats, and prioritise specific habitat types that are sometimes overlooked on a standard game drive (forest edges, wetland margins, rocky hillsides).
Our recommended 10-night Kenya birding circuit: Nairobi (1 night, Nairobi National Park birding) → Lake Nakuru (2 nights, flamingos and woodland) → Lake Naivasha (1 night, boat trip) → Lake Baringo (2 nights, freshwater specialist) → Samburu (2 nights, dry-country endemics) → Masai Mara (2 nights, savannah and Mara River). This circuit is designed to cover maximum habitat diversity and can realistically produce 400–500+ species for an attentive observer.
We work with specialist birding guides who have deep knowledge of Kenya’s avifauna across every habitat type. Tell us your target species, your existing life list, and your travel dates, and we will design a birding safari that maximises your Kenya bird list while also delivering the broader safari experience that Kenya does so well.
