Mara North Conservancy Camps: 7 Best Luxury Stays for Privacy and Big Cats (2026)

Lion resting in golden grass at sunset near Mara North Conservancy camps in Kenya

The engine is off and the only light is the red glow of your guide’s filtered torch. It sweeps slowly along a lugga until two green eyes catch it, then a spotted shape slips down from a fig tree and pads away into the dark. Nobody else is here. Back at camp, the fire is lit and a Maasai askari walks you to your tent.

Mara North Conservancy camps are small, low-density tented camps on Maasai-owned land bordering the northern Masai Mara Reserve. The leading choices are Elephant Pepper Camp, Kicheche Mara, Saruni Mara, Serian, Karen Blixen Camp and Offbeat Mara. They offer night drives, bush walks, horse riding and strict limits on vehicles at sightings.

Sense of Adventure is a Nairobi-based safari company at Mountain Mall on Thika Road, licensed by Kenya’s Tourism Regulatory Authority (TRA1/47/C01/77087). We design tailor-made luxury Kenya safaris and know the Mara conservancies well. This guide compares the best Mara North Conservancy camps, explains the conservancy fees, and helps you pick the right camp, season and itinerary.

What Makes Mara North Conservancy Camps Different?

Mara North Conservancy camps give you the wildlife of the Masai Mara with far fewer vehicles and activities the national reserve does not allow.

The Mara North Conservancy was founded in January 2009 as a not-for-profit partnership between Maasai landowners and tourism partners. It covers more than 29,000 hectares (about 73,000 acres) on the reserve’s northern boundary, with more than 800 Maasai landowners. The member camps pay fees that fund monthly land leases to those families.

The conservancy rules shape life at Mara North Conservancy camps. No more than five vehicles may stay at a sighting, with others waiting 100 metres away, and each vehicle gives way after ten minutes. Leaving the track is allowed only to view wildlife, by the shortest route. Night drives run in designated areas with red filters, back by 10pm. For a broader comparison, see Mara North vs Naboisho vs Olare Motorogi.

The 7 Best Mara North Conservancy Camps

All seven of these Mara North Conservancy camps appear on the conservancy’s official member list and describe themselves as inside Mara North on their own websites.

1. Elephant Pepper Camp (Elewana)

Why we love it: Elephant Pepper Camp combines rustic simplicity with real luxury, and it drove the creation of the conservancy. It has ten tents: eight safari tents and two honeymoon or family suites, one at each end of camp for privacy.

Best for: honeymooners, photographers and first-timers. The moment you’ll remember: a night game drive under the stars, followed by a fireside drink with your guide.

Practical facts: game drives, bush walks, night drives and sundowners; balloon on request; Mara North Airstrip is 30 minutes’ drive, about a 45-minute flight from Wilson. Ecotourism Kenya Gold rated. Price band $$$$; message us for current rates. Conservancy fees are extra. Trade-off: the minimum child age is not published, so ask before booking.

2. Kicheche Mara Camp

Why we love it: Kicheche Mara has nine tents and a two-bedroom family suite above a stream in a quiet valley. Bush walks are included, and the camp offers wild camping and a visit to the Mara Elephant Project.

Best for: photographers and families, as there is no minimum age at this camp. The moment you’ll remember: a night under canvas at a wild camp after a day on foot with your guide.

Practical facts: 30 minutes from Mara North Airstrip; solar powered; member of The Long Run. Published rates start from about USD 625 per person per night (2026, varies by season), plus conservancy fees. Two-night minimum stay. Trade-off: closed from 1 April to 22 May in 2026; no under-16s on wild-camping walks.

3. Saruni Mara

Why we love it: A founding member of the conservancy, Saruni Mara is a thatched eco-lodge with five cottages, a family villa and a private villa. More than 80% of its staff come from landowning families, so the people serving you are the people whose land you are exploring.

Best for: couples, families and anyone who wants a gentle spa element. The moment you’ll remember: a massage in the Maasai Wellbeing Space after a morning walk, or a session at the Warriors Academy learning tracking and bush skills.

Practical facts: shared day and night drives, bush walks, balloon flights and visits to Ol Chorro rhino sanctuary; drinks, night drives, walks and airstrip transfers included. Published rates start from about USD 500 per person per night (2026, varies by season), plus conservancy fees. Trade-off: cottages rather than tents, if canvas is your dream.

4. Basecamp Mara Houses

Why we love it: Basecamp Mara Houses are three exclusive-use houses in the heart of Mara North, with access to Lemek Conservancy too. Mara House and Acacia House each sleep six and Dik Dik House sleeps four. Each comes with its own staff, private guide and vehicle, and there is a shared pool.

Best for: families, multigenerational groups and friends celebrating together. The moment you’ll remember: your own guide shaping each day around nap times, teenagers and grandparents alike.

Practical facts: day and night drives, balloon flights and a Young Explorers Club for children. Published rates start from about USD 1,600 per house per night (2026, varies by season). Trade-off: a house, not a camp, so you miss the social campfire.

5. Serian ‘The Original’

Why we love it: Alex Walker’s Serian ‘The Original’ has five large marquee tents on hardwood decks, one of them a family unit, with open bush bathrooms. Every booking comes with a private vehicle, guide and spotter, so the day runs entirely on your timetable.

Best for: honeymooners and serious photographers. The moment you’ll remember: a hot shower under the open sky as the evening chorus of birds and frogs starts up.

Practical facts: open all year round; Mara North is the preferred airstrip; no Wi-Fi, by design. Price band $$$$$; message us for current rates. Trade-off: digital detox is part of the deal, which some guests love and others find hard.

6. Karen Blixen Camp

Why we love it: Karen Blixen Camp sits on the Mara River facing the Oloololo Escarpment. Its 22 tents stand on wooden platforms in a 1920s style, and it has a pool and spa, which is rare among Mara North Conservancy camps.

Best for: families, seniors and celebration groups who want more facilities. The moment you’ll remember: watching hippos in the Mara River from your deck between drives.

Practical facts: game drives, walks, night drives and balloon flights; its packages include drinks, shared drives, one night drive and airstrip transfers; child rates for ages 2–11. Price band $$$$; message us for current rates. Trade-off: with 22 tents it is larger than most conservancy camps.

7. Offbeat Mara Camp

Why we love it: Tucked into a quiet corner of the conservancy, Offbeat Mara has just seven tents: five doubles or twins and two family tents. Its sister company, Offbeat Riding Safaris, is a member of the conservancy, so horseback safaris are easy to add.

Best for: active families and experienced riders. The moment you’ll remember: running with Maasai guides at dawn, or a ride among zebra and giraffe for confident riders. Read more in our horseback safari Kenya guide.

Practical facts: day and evening drives, bush walks, balloon flights and cultural visits; teens 12–17 pay 25% less and children 4–11 pay 50% less. Price band $$$$; message us for current rates. Trade-off: simple, classic style rather than polished glamour.

The People Behind the Stay

Every night you spend at Mara North Conservancy camps helps pay a land lease to a Maasai family, which is why the wildlife is still here.

The conservancy model is simple. Member camps collect the conservancy fee and pass it to Mara North Conservancy, which pays monthly land leases to the landowners. In return, families keep the land open for wildlife and limit grazing in agreed areas. Kicheche notes that the conservancy is on the IUCN Green List of well-managed protected areas.

The people you meet make Mara North Conservancy camps special. Your guide may have grown up herding cattle on these plains. At Saruni Mara, more than 80% of staff come from landowning families, and the Warriors Academy shares traditional bush skills. Kicheche’s Community Trust supports local projects, and camps across the conservancy run with solar power and low-impact designs.

Expert tip from our Nairobi team: ask your guide about his own family’s land and cattle on your first drive. Guides in Mara North Conservancy camps usually love sharing it, and it changes how you see the landscape.

Mara North Conservancy Accommodation by Traveller Type

The right Mara North Conservancy accommodation depends on who you travel with, your budget and how much privacy you want.

  • Honeymooners: Serian ‘The Original’ or a honeymoon suite at Elephant Pepper. See our best honeymoon lodges in Kenya.
  • Families: Basecamp Mara Houses, Kicheche Mara’s family suite or Offbeat Mara’s family tents. Our safari minimum age guide explains the rules.
  • Photographers: Serian or Kicheche, with time to wait at sightings.
  • First-timers: Elephant Pepper or Saruni Mara for a classic, all-round conservancy safari.
  • Celebration groups: book a whole Basecamp house or a block of tents at Offbeat Mara.
  • Seniors: Karen Blixen Camp, with a pool and easy river views.

Private Conservancy Safari vs the Reserve

A private conservancy safari trades some of the reserve’s famous crossing points for privacy, night drives and walking.

From Mara North Conservancy camps you can still drive into the national reserve for the day, usually towards the Musiara area and the Mara River, paying the reserve fee for that day. In return, your mornings and evenings are quiet, with off-track viewing allowed under the conservancy rules. If you want both, split your nights. Our guide to luxury lodges in Masai Mara covers the camps inside the reserve, and inside or outside the Masai Mara explains the choice.

How We’d Plan It: 4 Nights in Mara North Conservancy Camps

Four nights lets you enjoy every activity Mara North Conservancy camps offer without rushing.

  1. Day 1: fly from Wilson to Mara North Airstrip, lunch in camp, afternoon drive and your first night drive.
  2. Day 2: dawn bush walk with a Maasai guide, then an afternoon drive and sundowners on a quiet ridge.
  3. Day 3: optional balloon flight, then a full day in the reserve along the Mara River with a picnic lunch.
  4. Day 4: horse ride for confident riders or a community visit, then a final evening drive.
  5. Day 5: morning drive and fly to Nairobi, Laikipia or the coast.

Our Celebration Safari – Masai Mara Conservancy (5 days) follows this rhythm, from USD 2,950 per adult sharing. For walkers, the Laikipia & Masai Mara Walking Safari (7 days) starts from USD 4,200 per adult. For the full luxury circuit, see our Luxury Fly-in Safari Kenya (12 days), from USD 8,900 per adult, or browse all Masai Mara safari packages.

We can build any of these Mara North Conservancy camps into a tailor-made private Kenya safari, subject to availability.
