A Nairobi to Zanzibar layover is simple on one ticket: you stay airside at JKIA, need no Kenya eTA and your bags go straight through. Flights to Zanzibar take about 80 minutes. On separate tickets, or with six hours or more to spare, you pass Kenyan immigration and need an eTA.
We are Sense of Adventure, a Nairobi-based safari company at Mountain Mall on Thika Road, and many of our guests fly on to Zanzibar after a safari or a stop in Nairobi. This guide covers flights, transit rules, luggage, Tanzania entry and insurance, the yellow fever question, what to do with your connection time and how to turn the stop into a safari.

✅ Nairobi to Zanzibar Layover: The Quick Answer
- Flight time: about 1 hour 20 minutes from JKIA (NBO) to Zanzibar (ZNZ), with several airlines flying the route.
- One ticket: stay airside, no Kenya eTA needed, bags usually checked through to Zanzibar.
- Separate tickets: you usually collect your bags and re-check them, so you need a Kenya eTA and the new Kenyan visitor health cover.
- Arriving in Zanzibar: a Tanzania visa (USD 50 for most single-entry visitors) and the mandatory inbound insurance (USD 44 per adult).
- Yellow fever: carry your certificate. Tanzania can ask for it from anyone arriving from Kenya, and it is required after an airport transit of more than 12 hours.
- Long gap: with 7 hours or more, a game drive or the Giraffe Centre fits before your flight.

How a Nairobi to Zanzibar Layover Works
A Nairobi to Zanzibar layover is a change of planes at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on the way to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar.
Nairobi is one of the main gateways to Zanzibar for travellers from Europe, North America, the Middle East and Asia. Long-haul flights land at JKIA, often early in the morning, and short regional flights carry passengers on across the Indian Ocean coast. The whole Nairobi to Zanzibar layover can take as little as two hours or stretch into a full day, depending on how your flights line up.
The key question is not the length of the stop but your ticket. If both flights are on one booking, the airline is responsible for the connection. If you booked them separately, you are on your own, and the rules for bags and paperwork change completely. Our guide on whether to book flights or safari first explains how to line up the pieces.
Flights From Nairobi to Zanzibar
Several airlines fly non-stop from JKIA to Zanzibar, and the flight takes about 1 hour 20 minutes.
In October 2026, schedules showed non-stop flights from Kenya Airways, Air Tanzania, Precision Air and Flightlink, adding up to roughly two flights a day. Timetables change by season, so check each airline’s own site before you book your Nairobi to Zanzibar layover. Kenya Airways connects with many long-haul arrivals at JKIA, which makes a one-ticket Nairobi to Zanzibar layover easy to arrange.
Flights from Wilson Airport
Safarilink also schedules flights from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to Zanzibar. Wilson is a separate airport across the city, so this is never an airside connection. You must clear immigration at JKIA, collect your bags and drive across town. Our guide to getting from JKIA to Wilson Airport explains the timings.
Flying via Mombasa
Some travellers combine the Kenyan coast with Zanzibar. Flights between Mombasa and Zanzibar have operated in recent years, but schedules come and go, so confirm before you plan around them. Our Mombasa and Diani beach guide covers the Kenyan side.
One Ticket or Separate Tickets? Why It Matters
On one ticket you stay airside and your bags are transferred for you; on separate tickets you usually pass immigration, collect your bags and check in again.
| One ticket (same booking) | Separate tickets | |
|---|---|---|
| Kenya eTA | Not needed if you stay airside | Usually needed to collect and re-check bags |
| Kenya visitor health cover | Not needed if you stay airside | Needed for most travellers who enter Kenya |
| Checked bags | Normally tagged through to ZNZ | Collected at JKIA unless the airlines agree to through-check |
| Missed connection | Airline rebooks you | You buy a new ticket |
| Safe minimum gap | The airline’s legal minimum | At least 4 to 5 hours |
On a Nairobi to Zanzibar layover with two bookings, bags are the biggest risk. Some airlines have interline agreements that let bags travel through on separate tickets. Never assume it; ask at check-in in your departure city. Our Nairobi layover luggage guide explains through-checking and storage in more detail.
Do You Need a Kenya eTA on a Nairobi to Zanzibar Layover?
You do not need a Kenya eTA on a Nairobi to Zanzibar layover if you stay inside the airport, but you do if you pass immigration for any reason.
The official Kenya eTA portal exempts passengers in transit who arrive and leave by air without leaving the airport. That covers most one-ticket connections. You need an eTA if you must collect bags on separate tickets, want to leave the airport, or are staying the night in a hotel. The portal lists a transit eTA at USD 20 and a standard eTA at USD 30 at the time of writing; apply at least three working days ahead.
Many African nationals are now exempt from the eTA altogether. Most visitors entering Kenya also need the government-designated travel health cover introduced in October 2026, though airside transit passengers do not. Our guides on whether you can leave JKIA on a layover and on Kenya mandatory travel insurance explain both rules.
Which JKIA terminal?
Terminal allocations change, so follow the transfer signs and check the departure screens as soon as you land. Our Nairobi airport guide explains the terminal layout and transfer desks.
Entering Zanzibar: Visa, Insurance and Yellow Fever
Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, so you need a Tanzanian visa unless exempt, Zanzibar’s mandatory inbound insurance and, in many cases, a yellow fever certificate.
Tanzania visa
Tanzania’s immigration guidelines list a single-entry visa at USD 50 and a multiple-entry visa at USD 100, which US citizens must buy. Apply online through the official Tanzania e-visa portal, allowing up to ten days for processing. Visas on arrival are still issued to eligible nationalities, but applying ahead saves time in the queue at the end of your Nairobi to Zanzibar layover.
Mandatory inbound insurance
Zanzibar has required inbound travel insurance since October 2024, and from 1 October 2026 Tanzania extended a similar scheme to the mainland. It costs USD 44 per adult and USD 22 per child aged 3 to 17, with infants free, and lasts up to 92 days. Your private policy does not replace it. If Zanzibar is your first stop in Tanzania, you buy it from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation, online or on arrival. See the UK government’s Tanzania entry requirements for the latest rules.
Yellow fever on a Nairobi to Zanzibar layover
Kenya is classed as a yellow fever risk country, which matters on every Nairobi to Zanzibar layover. Tanzania requires a certificate from travellers aged one or over who arrive from a risk country, including those who spend more than 12 hours in transit at an airport in one. Officials sometimes ask short-transit passengers too, so carry your certificate if you have one. UK health guidance on Travel Health Pro sets out the rule; ask a travel clinic well before you fly.
How Much Connection Time You Need
On one ticket, the airline’s minimum connection time is enough, though two hours feels calmer; on separate tickets, allow at least four to five hours.
| Time at JKIA | Best plan | Paperwork |
|---|---|---|
| Under 3 hours | Go straight to your gate | No eTA if on one ticket |
| 3–6 hours | Stay airside: lounge, meal, rest | No eTA if on one ticket |
| 6–8 hours | Short game drive or Giraffe Centre | eTA and Kenyan health cover |
| 8–12 hours | Game drive, baby elephants and giraffes | eTA and Kenyan health cover |
| Overnight | Hotel near JKIA, dawn game drive | eTA and Kenyan health cover |
| 1 night or more by choice | A Nairobi stopover or a short safari | eTA and Kenyan health cover |
To leave the airport, count 45 to 90 minutes for immigration, traffic each way and three hours back at JKIA before an international departure. Kenya Airports Authority advice is to arrive three hours before international flights. Our guide to the layover time you need to leave JKIA breaks this down.

What to Do on a Nairobi to Zanzibar Layover
With six hours or more and an eTA, a Nairobi to Zanzibar layover can include lions, rhinos, giraffes or baby elephants before you reach the beach.
Nairobi National Park borders JKIA, so a game drive is the classic way to use a long Nairobi to Zanzibar layover. Non-resident adults pay USD 80 under the Kenya Wildlife Service fees in force since October 2025; check the Kenya Wildlife Service for updates. The Giraffe Centre (9am to 5pm) and the Sheldrick elephant nursery (11am to noon, booked ahead) are close by. Our guide to choosing the Giraffe Centre or elephant orphanage helps you pick.
Six to eight hours
On a shorter Nairobi to Zanzibar layover, choose one thing: a two to three-hour game drive or an hour with the giraffes. Our 6-hour layover itinerary shows what fits.
Eight to twelve hours
An early landing lets you combine a game drive, the 11am elephants and the giraffes. Our Nairobi layover tour does exactly this, priced from USD 190 per adult sharing with JKIA pick-up and drop-off, entry fees and lunch included; message us for a quote for your dates.
Overnight
If your Zanzibar flight leaves the next day, an overnight Nairobi to Zanzibar layover is a real bonus. Sleep near the airport and be at the park gate at 6am. Our guide to hotels near JKIA compares options with airport shuttles.

Step by Step: Your Nairobi to Zanzibar Layover
Follow these steps and your Nairobi to Zanzibar layover will run smoothly, whichever kind of ticket you hold.
- Check your booking: confirm whether both flights are on one ticket and whether bags are tagged to ZNZ.
- Sort Tanzania paperwork: apply for your Tanzania e-visa and buy the Zanzibar insurance before you travel if you can.
- Pack your yellow fever certificate with your passport.
- Apply for a Kenya eTA only if you will leave the airport or collect bags.
- On landing at JKIA, follow the transfer signs, or the arrivals route if you are going out.
- Check the departure screens for your Zanzibar gate and be there before boarding time.
- In Zanzibar, show your visa, insurance and yellow fever certificate, then collect your bags.
Arriving in Zanzibar
International flights use Terminal 3 at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, about 5 km from Stone Town.
The drive into Stone Town is usually short outside busy times, while the east-coast beaches such as Paje, Matemwe and Nungwi take longer. Arrange a hotel transfer in advance if your Nairobi to Zanzibar layover gets you in late in the day. Stone Town is a good first night after an evening flight, as the old town’s restaurants and rooftops are close at hand. Our Zanzibar beach holiday guide compares the island’s beaches.

Turn Your Nairobi to Zanzibar Layover Into a Safari
If you have flexible dates, a few nights in Kenya before Zanzibar turns a Nairobi to Zanzibar layover into a full safari-and-beach holiday.
Most airlines let you add a stopover in Nairobi for a modest change in fare, especially with a multi-city booking. Two or three nights are enough for the Masai Mara or Amboseli, then you fly on to the beach to relax. Our guide to turning a layover into a Nairobi stopover explains the booking, and our guide to combining a safari with a beach holiday covers the logistics.
- 1 night: sunrise game drive, baby elephants and giraffes in Nairobi.
- 2 nights: Amboseli for elephants under Kilimanjaro.
- 3 nights or more: the Masai Mara, by road or by light aircraft.
Light aircraft have a 15 kg soft-bag limit, which catches out many travellers who stretch a Nairobi to Zanzibar layover into a safari, so read our guide to safari luggage weight limits before you pack your beach kit.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Most problems on a Nairobi to Zanzibar layover come from paperwork, not flights.
- Booking a tight self-transfer: two hours on separate tickets leaves no room for a late arrival.
- Forgetting the Zanzibar insurance: it is compulsory, and private cover does not replace it.
- Leaving the yellow fever card at home: it can cause long delays on arrival.
- Assuming bags go through: confirm the tag says ZNZ before you leave the check-in desk.
- Confusing JKIA and Wilson: check the airport code on every boarding pass.
Nairobi to Zanzibar Layover FAQs
Do I need a Kenya eTA for a Nairobi to Zanzibar layover?
Not if both flights are on one ticket and you stay inside JKIA. Kenya exempts air passengers in transit who do not leave the airport. You need an eTA if you must collect and re-check bags on separate tickets, want to leave the airport or plan to stay overnight in a hotel.
How long is the flight from Nairobi to Zanzibar?
The non-stop flight from JKIA to Zanzibar takes about 1 hour 20 minutes. Kenya Airways, Air Tanzania, Precision Air and Flightlink were all scheduled on the route in October 2026, with roughly two flights a day. Timetables change by season, so check each airline before you book.
Will my bags be checked through to Zanzibar?
On a single ticket, bags are normally tagged through to Zanzibar, so you only collect them on arrival. On separate tickets you usually collect them at JKIA and check in again, which means passing Kenyan immigration. Always confirm that your bag tag shows ZNZ before leaving the check-in desk.
Do I need a yellow fever certificate for Zanzibar from Nairobi?
Carry one. Tanzania requires a certificate from travellers aged one or over arriving from a yellow fever risk country, which includes Kenya, and from anyone who spent more than 12 hours in transit at an airport there. Officials sometimes ask short-transit passengers too. Ask a travel clinic before you fly.
What insurance do I need to enter Zanzibar?
Zanzibar requires its own inbound travel insurance, costing USD 44 per adult and USD 22 per child aged 3 to 17, with infants free. It lasts up to 92 days and your private policy does not replace it. Buy it online before travel or on arrival from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation.
How much time do I need between flights in Nairobi?
On one ticket, the airline’s minimum connection time is enough, though about two hours feels calmer. On separate tickets, allow at least four to five hours. To leave the airport for a game drive or the Giraffe Centre, you need at least six to seven hours and a Kenya eTA.
Can I see wildlife on a Nairobi to Zanzibar layover?
Yes, with six hours or more and an approved eTA. Nairobi National Park borders JKIA, so a two to three-hour game drive is possible, and the Giraffe Centre and Sheldrick baby elephants are nearby. Keep three hours back at the airport before your flight to Zanzibar.
