A Laikipia walking safari shows you the details you miss from a vehicle: tracks, dung, medicinal plants and the thrill of approaching giraffes and elephants on foot. Laikipia’s private ranches north of Mount Kenya are among the best places in Kenya for walking, with expert guides and few other visitors. This seven-day journey continues to a Masai Mara conservancy, where walks with Maasai guides alternate with game drives to see big cats, and the price starts from USD 4,200 per adult sharing.

Why Choose a Laikipia Walking Safari?
On a game drive you see animals. On foot you learn how they live. A guide stops to read a set of tracks, points out a plant used in traditional medicine or lets you listen to the sounds of the bush, and the whole landscape comes to life. Distances feel different on foot, and so does the sense of being part of the place rather than watching it through a window.
Laikipia is well suited to walking because its private land and conservancies allow guided walks that are not permitted in many national reserves. The trip is also quiet. You share the bush with very few other visitors, and your guides know the terrain and the animals well.
- Guided walks: in Laikipia and a Masai Mara conservancy, led by professional guides and armed rangers.
- Local expertise: track wildlife with Samburu and Maasai rangers.
- Variety: game drives and night drives between the walks.
- Privacy: few other visitors on private land.
- Easy transfers: fly-in transfers between camps.

- Days 2 to 3: Laikipia walking
- Day 4: Fly to a Masai Mara conservancy

Day-by-Day Laikipia Walking Safari Itinerary
Days 1 to 3: Laikipia
Day 1, fly to Laikipia. Fly from Wilson Airport to Laikipia. In the afternoon you take an introductory walk and receive a safety briefing, followed by a sundowner. The briefing covers how to walk in single file, how to stay quiet and what to do if you meet an animal.
Day 2, tracking on foot. A morning walk tracking elephants, giraffes and plains game, followed by an afternoon game drive. This is the day when your guide teaches you to read tracks and signs.
Day 3, a longer walk. A longer morning walk takes you to a rocky kopje with views of Mount Kenya. An optional night drive in the evening offers a chance to see nocturnal wildlife.
Days 4 to 7: The Masai Mara Conservancy
Day 4, fly to the Mara. Fly to the Mara and transfer to a conservancy camp. An afternoon game drive follows. Our Masai Mara safari page has more information about the wider ecosystem.
Day 5, walking with Maasai guides. A morning walk with Maasai guides, learning about plants, tracks and Maasai life, then an afternoon game drive looking for big cats.
Day 6, game drives and night drive. A full day of game drives, followed by an evening night drive looking for nocturnal wildlife.
Day 7, return to Nairobi. A final short walk or game drive, then fly back to Nairobi for your onward journey.

How a Laikipia Walking Safari Works
Walking safaris are led by professional walking guides and armed rangers who read animal behaviour and keep a safe distance. Before your first walk, you receive a briefing on the rules. You walk in single file behind the guide, stay quiet, follow hand signals and never run if you see an animal. Guides stop often to look at tracks, droppings, plants and birds, so the pace is slow and relaxed.
Walks are not hikes. They last 2 to 4 hours, usually in the early morning when the air is cool and animals are active, and they stop often for water and explanations. You need reasonable fitness for uneven ground, but you do not need to be an athlete. If you would like a shorter walk, tell your guide and they will adjust the route.
Wildlife on a Laikipia Walking Safari
Laikipia: elephants, giraffes and plains game
Laikipia’s ranches and conservancies hold elephants, giraffes and a wide range of plains game. On foot you approach them slowly and quietly, which is a very different experience from watching them from a vehicle. A night drive adds the chance to see nocturnal animals.
The Mara conservancy: big cats and Maasai knowledge
The conservancy next to the Masai Mara National Reserve allows guided walks, which are not permitted in the main reserve. Walks with Maasai guides teach you about plants, tracks and Maasai life, and game drives give you the chance to see lions, cheetahs and other big cats. The conservancy is quieter than the main reserve, so sightings are often private.
Accommodation and Pace
You stay in camps chosen for their location and their walking programmes, on a full-board basis while on safari. Days follow a steady rhythm: an early walk, a late breakfast, a rest in the heat of the day and a game drive in the afternoon. Because the transfers are by air, you do not lose time on the road. Game drives are in 4×4 vehicles with the camp’s guides and may be shared or private. See our Kenya lodges and camps for the style of accommodation we use, or explore the luxury Kenya safari collection.
Best Time for a Laikipia Walking Safari
The best months for walking are June to October and January to March, when the ground is dry and the weather is clear.
- January to March: hot, dry weather and good walking conditions.
- April to May: the long rains. Landscapes are green and quiet, but paths can be wet.
- June to October: the dry season, with firm ground and clear skies. The Great Migration reaches the Mara from about July to October.
- November to December: short rains, fresh scenery and fewer dusty conditions.

Photography on a Laikipia Walking Safari
Walking brings you to eye level with the landscape, and it offers photographs that a vehicle cannot. Carry a light camera on a strap and a lens that covers wide and medium distances, because animals are often closer than expected. A heavy telephoto lens is harder to carry for hours. Keep your camera ready but follow your guide’s instructions, and never step away from the group for a better angle. Early light on the plains and over Mount Kenya is especially beautiful.
What to Pack for a Laikipia Walking Safari
- Neutral-coloured clothes in khaki, olive or brown. Avoid bright colours and white.
- Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes or light boots, with socks that protect against thorns.
- A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen.
- A warm layer for early mornings and evenings.
- Binoculars, a light camera and a refillable water bottle.
- Insect repellent and any malaria prevention recommended by your doctor.
- A soft-sided bag, because light aircraft have limited luggage space.
Practical Information for Your Laikipia Walking Safari
Most visitors need a Kenya eTA before arrival, so apply online ahead of your trip and check current requirements for your nationality. Malaria is present in much of Kenya, so speak to your doctor about prevention, and take out travel insurance that covers medical evacuation. Kenya’s currency is the Kenyan shilling, US dollars are accepted at many camps and tips are not included in the price. Kenya uses the three-pin UK-style plug at 240 volts, and mobile coverage is patchy in remote areas. For official information, see Magical Kenya and the Kenya Wildlife Service.
