A Mombasa airport layover of six hours or more is long enough to leave Moi International Airport and see Fort Jesus, the Old Town or the seafront, because Mombasa Island is only about 10 to 12 km away. You need an approved Kenya eTA to pass immigration. With less time, stay airside and relax.
We are Sense of Adventure, a Nairobi-based safari company at Mountain Mall on Thika Road, and we plan coast trips and layovers for travellers flying through Kenya. This guide covers which flights use Mombasa, the paperwork, how much time you need, the best things to do near the airport with 2026 prices, traffic, food, safety and sample plans.

✅ Mombasa Airport Layover: The Quick Answer
- Where: Moi International Airport (MBA) sits on the mainland west of Mombasa Island, roughly 20 to 30 minutes from the Old Town when roads are clear.
- Paperwork: stay airside and you need nothing extra; leave the airport and you need a Kenya eTA, plus the new visitor health cover for most travellers.
- Minimum time to go out: about 6 hours between flights; 8 hours or more feels relaxed.
- Best short outing: Fort Jesus and the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Non-African adults pay USD 17 for the fort under the 2026 museum fees.
- Longer stops: Haller Park, the Mombasa Marine Park or, on an overnight stop, a Tsavo East day safari.
- Return buffer: be back at the airport about 3 hours before an international flight and 2 hours before a domestic one.

Who Has a Mombasa Airport Layover?
Most travellers with a Mombasa airport layover are connecting between an international flight and a domestic, safari or island flight on the Kenyan coast.
Moi International Airport is Kenya’s second international gateway after Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi. Schedules in October 2026 listed flights from Dubai with flydubai, Addis Ababa with Ethiopian Airlines, Istanbul with Turkish Airlines and Entebbe with Uganda Airlines, plus seasonal and holiday flights from Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. Domestic flights link Mombasa with Nairobi many times a day.
That mix creates several typical layovers. Some travellers fly in from the Gulf or Europe and wait for a domestic flight to Nairobi. Others arrive from a safari and wait for an evening flight home. A few connect between the Kenyan coast and Zanzibar, which has had regular flights from Mombasa. Timetables change by season, so always check the airline’s own website.
Mombasa airport layover or JKIA layover?
If your route offers a choice, remember that the two airports suit different plans. A JKIA stop gives you lions and rhinos in Nairobi National Park, as our guide to the best things to do on a long Nairobi layover explains. A Mombasa airport layover gives you Swahili history, Indian Ocean views and coastal food instead.
Do You Need a Kenya eTA on a Mombasa Airport Layover?
You only need an eTA on a Mombasa airport layover if you pass immigration; transit passengers who stay inside the airport do not.
Kenya’s rules are the same at every airport. The official Kenya eTA portal exempts air passengers in transit who do not leave the airport. If you want to visit the city, collect bags on separate tickets or change from an international to a domestic flight, you must enter Kenya. The portal lists a transit eTA at USD 20 and a standard single-entry eTA at USD 30 at the time of writing. Apply at least three working days before you fly.
Many African nationals are now exempt from the eTA. From October 2026, most visitors entering Kenya also need the government-designated travel health cover, bought during the eTA process; airside transit passengers are exempt. Rules have changed several times, so check before you travel. Our guides to Kenya visa requirements and Kenya mandatory travel insurance explain both.
International to domestic connections
If you land from abroad and fly on within Kenya, you clear immigration and customs in Mombasa even on one ticket, because domestic flights leave from the domestic side. That means your Mombasa airport layover always needs an eTA in this case, whether or not you go into town. Allow at least two hours for this kind of connection.
How Much Time You Need to Leave the Airport
For a Mombasa airport layover with a trip into town, allow at least six hours between flights; eight or more lets you enjoy it without watching the clock.
| Step | Typical time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Disembark, immigration and bags | 30–60 minutes | Longer when several international flights land together |
| Drive to the Old Town | 20–30 minutes off-peak | Often 45–60 minutes or more at rush hour |
| Time at Fort Jesus and the Old Town | 1.5–2.5 hours | Guided walk plus a drink or snack |
| Drive back to the airport | 20–60 minutes | Leave extra time on weekday evenings |
| Check-in and security | 3 hours before an international flight | 2 hours before a domestic flight |
Add those steps up and a six-hour Mombasa airport layover leaves you around two hours in town. That is enough for Fort Jesus and a short Old Town walk, but not much more. The same logic applies at Nairobi, as our guide to the layover time you need to leave JKIA shows step by step.
Traffic around Mombasa
The airport road joins the main highway near Changamwe, and traffic then funnels onto the island across the Makupa Causeway. Heavy port and commuter traffic can slow this route on weekday mornings and evenings. Midday and weekends are usually easier. Our drivers plan each Mombasa airport layover around these patterns rather than a map estimate.
Best Things to Do on a Mombasa Airport Layover
The best things to do on a Mombasa airport layover are Fort Jesus, the Old Town, the seafront and, with more time, Haller Park or the marine park.
Fort Jesus: the top Mombasa airport layover sight
Fort Jesus was built by the Portuguese in the 1590s to guard the old harbour, and it changed hands many times between Portuguese, Omani and British rulers. Today it is a museum and, with the Old Town around it, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Under the National Museums of Kenya fees in force since 7 May 2026, visitors from outside Africa pay USD 17 per adult and USD 8 per child. A combined ticket with the nearby Butterfly House costs USD 19 and USD 9. Check current prices with the National Museums of Kenya.
Mombasa Old Town
The Old Town’s narrow lanes are lined with carved wooden doors, balconies and mosques that show centuries of Swahili, Arab, Indian and European influence. A local guide makes the walk much richer and keeps you on the right streets. Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, as this is a largely Muslim neighbourhood. Ask before photographing people.
Mama Ngina Waterfront and the Tusks
Mama Ngina Waterfront is a public seafront park near Fort Jesus, with views over the Likoni channel and food stalls selling coconut water and grilled snacks. On the way in or out you can pass the famous Mombasa Tusks on Moi Avenue, the city’s best-known landmark. Both make easy photo stops on a short Mombasa airport layover.

Haller Park
Haller Park in Bamburi, north of the island, is a former cement quarry turned into a wildlife sanctuary with giraffes, hippos, tortoises and birds. Recent listings show non-resident adults at KSh 2,200 and children at KSh 1,000, with daytime opening hours and set feeding times for giraffes and hippos. Confirm prices and times locally before you go. It is further from the airport than the Old Town, so allow 45 to 75 minutes each way.
Mombasa Marine National Park
The marine park off Nyali and Bamburi protects a coral reef and lagoon. Kenya Wildlife Service fees in force since October 2025 list non-resident adults at USD 25 and children at USD 15. Glass-bottom boat and snorkel trips depend on the tide, so they only suit a Mombasa airport layover with eight or more hours and flexible timing. Our Mombasa Marine National Park guide explains how trips work.
Mombasa Airport Layover Options Compared
This table shows which sights fit which Mombasa airport layover, with prices for a non-resident adult.

| Fort Jesus and Old Town | USD 17 (fort) | 20–60 minutes | 6 hours or more |
| Mama Ngina Waterfront and the Tusks | Free | 20–60 minutes | 6 hours or more |
| Haller Park | KSh 2,200 (check locally) | 45–75 minutes | 8 hours or more |
| Mombasa Marine Park boat trip | USD 25 plus boat hire | 45–75 minutes | 8–10 hours, tide permitting |
| Diani Beach | Free beach | Roughly 1–1.5 hours | Overnight |

Eating Well on a Mombasa Airport Layover
Swahili food is one of the best reasons to leave the terminal, and a good meal is easy to fit into any Mombasa airport layover in town.
Mombasa is famous for biryani and pilau rice, fish cooked in coconut sauce, viazi karai (spiced fried potatoes) and mahamri, a lightly sweet fried bread. In the Old Town, look out for Swahili coffee poured from tall brass pots and fresh coconut water from street sellers. Choose busy places with a fast turnover, drink bottled water and carry small notes in Kenya shillings. Our guide to Kenya currency and money explains cash, cards and M-Pesa.
- Quick bite: samosas, mahamri and chai from an Old Town café.
- Sit-down lunch: biryani or grilled fish near the seafront.
- Airside: cafés and bars in the terminal, where prices are higher but the walk is short.
Staying Airside: Rest, Lounges and Facilities
If your Mombasa airport layover is under six hours, or you have no eTA, staying inside the terminal is the sensible choice.
International flights use Terminal 1, while Terminal 2 handles domestic flights. The airport has lounges, cafés, duty-free shopping, banks and ATMs, so you can rest, eat and change money without leaving. Lounge access depends on your ticket, card or a paid pass, so check before you fly. For the bigger picture of Kenyan airports, the Kenya Airports Authority publishes airport information and notices.
Luggage on a Mombasa airport layover
On one ticket, bags are usually checked through on international connections, though not always on international-to-domestic ones. If you must collect them, ask your airline or the airport information desk about storage, or plan a trip with a driver who can keep bags in the locked vehicle. If you are flying on to a safari by light aircraft, remember the soft-bag limits explained in our guide to safari luggage weight limits.
Getting Around Safely
The safest way to get around on a Mombasa airport layover is a pre-booked driver or a ride-hailing app, not a vehicle hailed on the street.
| Option | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked private driver | Several stops, luggage, a fixed return time | Agree the price and waiting time in advance |
| Ride-hailing app | One stop, light bags | Use the official pick-up point; fares rise at peak times |
| Official airport taxi | Last-minute trips | Agree the fare before you set off |
| Tuk-tuk or matatu | Short hops in town only | Slow, crowded and unsuitable for a flight deadline |
Mombasa is generally welcoming, but petty theft happens in busy areas, so keep phones and cameras out of sight. Read the UK government travel advice for Kenya or your own government’s advice before you go, as some areas of the wider coast carry specific warnings. Our guide on whether it is safe to leave JKIA covers the same principles for Nairobi.
Heat, sun and health
The coast is hot and humid all year. Carry water, sunscreen and a hat, and wear light, loose clothing. Mombasa is a malaria area, so use repellent, especially from late afternoon, and ask a travel clinic about tablets. Our guide to Kenya safari malaria risk explains the basics.

Turning Your Mombasa Airport Layover Into a Beach Stop
If your ticket allows a free or cheap stopover, a few nights on the coast turn a Mombasa airport layover into a proper beach holiday.
Diani on the south coast has long white beaches and is reached via the Likoni ferry or the newer Dongo Kundu bypass, which has cut journey times for many coast drivers. Nyali, Bamburi and Shanzu on the north coast are closer to the airport. Watamu and Malindi lie further north. Our Mombasa and Diani beach guide compares the areas, and our guide to turning a layover into a Nairobi stopover explains how multi-city tickets work.
If you are travelling on to Tanzania, our Nairobi to Zanzibar layover guide covers visas, insurance and yellow fever rules that apply to Zanzibar flights from the Kenyan coast too.
Mistakes to Avoid on a Mombasa Airport Layover
Most problems on a Mombasa airport layover come from timing and paperwork rather than the city itself.
- Forgetting the eTA: you cannot leave the airport without one, and approval is not instant.
- Trusting a map’s drive time: causeway traffic can double it at rush hour.
- Heading for Diani on a short stop: the beach is lovely, but the round trip eats most of a six-hour layover.
- Underdressing for the Old Town: cover shoulders and knees out of respect.
- Cutting the return buffer: aim to be back three hours before an international flight.
