Nairobi Layover Tour – National Park, Baby Elephants & Giraffes (1 Day)

1 Day

A long connection at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is the perfect excuse for a Nairobi layover tour. Nairobi National Park borders the airport, so within an hour of landing you can be watching lions, rhinos and giraffes with the city skyline behind them. We meet you in arrivals, plan the day around your flight times and return you to JKIA at least three hours before your next departure. The tour starts from USD 190 per adult sharing.

Why Book a Nairobi Layover Tour?

Most layovers are spent in a terminal, looking at a departure board. In Nairobi you can do something very different, because the airport sits beside one of the few national parks in the world next to a capital city. With the right planning, a gap of eight hours or more becomes a mini-safari.

  • A real game drive: lions, black rhinos, buffalo, giraffes and zebras on open plains next to the city.
  • Baby elephants: the 11am public visit at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant nursery.
  • Hand-feeding giraffes: endangered Rothschild’s giraffes at the Giraffe Centre.
  • Timed around your flights: airport pick-up and drop-off, and a return at least three hours before departure.
  • Easy for transit passengers: a private vehicle and driver-guide handle everything.
  • Lunch included: a meal in Karen between the stops.

Nairobi Layover Tour Itinerary

The plan flexes with your flight times, but this is the typical order for an all-day Nairobi layover tour.

Morning: arrival and game drive

You meet your guide in the JKIA arrivals hall and drive straight into Nairobi National Park. You spend two to three hours looking for lions, black rhinos, buffalo, giraffes and zebras on the open plains, with the city skyline on the horizon.

Late morning: Sheldrick elephant nursery

You join the 11am public visit at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, where orphaned baby elephants come in for their milk bottles and a mud bath while keepers tell each orphan’s rescue story.

Afternoon: Giraffe Centre and return to JKIA

After lunch in Karen, you feed endangered Rothschild’s giraffes from the raised platform at the Giraffe Centre. Then you transfer back to JKIA at least three hours before your onward flight.

Nairobi National Park Beside the Airport

The park is the reason this layover works. It lies right next to the airport, so you reach the gate within minutes of leaving the terminal. The open plains, acacia scrub and forest patches shelter a surprising range of animals, and the city skyline gives photographs a setting you will not find anywhere else.

What animals can you see?

Lions, black and white rhinos, buffalo, giraffes, zebras and hippos live in the park, along with more than 400 bird species. Elephants are not resident there, which is why the Sheldrick nursery is part of this tour. No sighting is guaranteed, but your guide knows the tracks and where animals have been seen recently. For a longer visit, see our Nairobi National Park safari.

Baby Elephants and Giraffes

The two Karen stops are the emotional highlights. At the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, you watch orphaned elephants arrive for their bottles and play in the mud while keepers describe how each one was rescued. The public visit runs at 11am, which is why the tour is timed around it.

At the Giraffe Centre, you climb a raised platform and feed Rothschild’s giraffes by hand, a rare chance to see these endangered animals at eye level. Both stops are included in the price, together with lunch in Karen.

How Long a Layover Do You Need?

At least eight hours is comfortable, so you can clear immigration, enjoy the tour and be back at JKIA three hours before your next international flight. With six to eight hours, we can run a shorter game drive only. For layovers of eight to twelve hours, the full programme above fits well.

What if my flight is delayed?

We track your flight and adjust the plan. If you land late, we shorten or reorder the stops, and we always prioritise getting you back to JKIA on time.

Visa and Transit eTA

Most visitors need a Kenya Transit eTA to leave the airport during a layover of up to 72 hours. Apply online on the official Kenya eTA website before you fly, and keep a copy on your phone. The eTA is not included in the price of the Nairobi layover tour, so please arrange it in advance.

Planning Tips for Your Nairobi Layover Tour

Timing is everything on a layover, so work backwards from your departure. Your flight leaves, you want to be at JKIA at least three hours earlier, and the tour must fit between your landing and that deadline. The 11am elephant visit is a fixed point, so flights landing early in the morning fit the full programme most easily.

  • Send us both flight numbers and times as soon as you book, so we can check the schedule.
  • Apply for your Kenya Transit eTA well before you fly.
  • Check whether your bags are checked through, and pack a day bag accordingly.
  • Carry your passport and boarding passes at all times.
  • Let us know if anyone has mobility needs or dietary requirements.

Photography on a Nairobi Layover Tour

Few layovers produce photographs like these. In the park, a zoom lens helps with distant animals, while a wide frame captures the skyline behind giraffes and rhinos. At the elephant nursery and the Giraffe Centre, you are close enough for a phone camera to work well. Keep your lens clean, as dust is common, and charge your devices before you land.

What About Your Luggage?

If your bags are checked through to your final destination, you only need a day pack. If not, your luggage stays locked in our vehicle during the tour. Keep your passport, boarding passes and valuables with you, and carry a light layer, because mornings in the park can be cool.

Who Is the Nairobi Layover Tour For?

  • Transit passengers: travellers connecting through JKIA on European and other long-haul airlines.
  • First-time visitors: a taste of Kenyan wildlife without a full safari.
  • Families: baby elephants and hand-fed giraffes are a hit with children.
  • Business travellers: a memorable way to use a long gap between flights.
  • Future safari guests: a preview before a longer trip to the Masai Mara or Amboseli.

Best Time for a Nairobi Layover Tour

You can do the tour all year. The dry months, roughly June to October and January to March, make game viewing easier, while the green season after the rains brings lush scenery. Your flight times matter more than the calendar, so tell us when you land and when you leave, and we will build the day around them.

What to Wear and Bring

  • Comfortable clothes in neutral colours, plus a light jacket.
  • A hat, sunscreen and sunglasses.
  • A camera or phone with a zoom, and binoculars if you have them.
  • Your passport, boarding passes and printed or saved eTA.
  • A small day pack, and a little cash for tips.

What Is Included and Not Included

  • Private safari vehicle and driver-guide
  • JKIA pick-up and drop-off
  • Nairobi National Park entry fee
  • Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and Giraffe Centre entry
  • Lunch in Karen
  • Bottled drinking water

Not included: the Kenya Transit eTA, tips and gratuities, drinks and personal expenses.

Combine Your Nairobi Layover Tour

If your layover is a few days rather than a few hours, there is much more to see. Browse our Nairobi day tours, add the Karen Blixen Museum tour, or step up to a full Kenya safari from Nairobi.

You can also compare itineraries on our Kenya safari packages page. For official information on parks and entry rules, see the Kenya Wildlife Service and Magical Kenya.

Is the Nairobi Layover Tour Worth It?

Yes, if your connection is long enough. The Nairobi layover tour turns dead time into a genuine wildlife experience, with a game drive, baby elephants and giraffes, all organised around your flights so there is no stress about missing a connection. Many guests tell us it was the highlight of an otherwise tiring journey. If your connection is shorter than eight hours, a game drive alone still gives you a memorable taste of Kenya, and you can plan a longer visit next time with a full safari.
