2-Day Tsavo & Taita Hills Safari from Mombasa

2 Days

A 2 day Tsavo safari from Mombasa gives beach holidaymakers what a day trip cannot: sunset and sunrise game drives, when animals are most active, and a night listening to the bush. Day one explores Tsavo East, home of the famous red elephants. Day two visits the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary at the foot of the Taita Hills. You sleep at a lodge overlooking a floodlit waterhole, and we collect you from your coast hotel and bring you back the next evening. Prices start from USD 420 per adult sharing.

Tsavo’s elephants take on the colour of the red soil when they dust-bathe, and waterholes are where you see them at their most relaxed.

Why Choose a 2 Day Tsavo Safari?

A single day in Tsavo East is a long, rewarding day, but the park is big and the drive from the coast eats into your game-viewing time. Adding a night changes the trip completely. You see the park in the late afternoon, when the light is warm and animals come out, and you wake up in the Taita Hills area for a sunrise drive before the heat builds.

It is a relaxed way to see real African wildlife from a beach base. You pack light, leave most of your luggage at your hotel and return the next day with a full set of photographs and stories.

  • Two parks in two days: game drives in Tsavo East and in the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • The best light: sunset and sunrise drives, when wildlife is most active.
  • A waterhole at your door: a lodge night overlooking a floodlit waterhole.
  • Red elephants, lions and giraffes: classic Tsavo wildlife.
  • Easy pick-up: hotel collection from the south coast, Mombasa and the north coast.

2 Day Tsavo Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Coast to Tsavo East

You are collected early from your coast hotel and driven inland to Tsavo East National Park. The journey takes you from palm-lined coast to dry bush country, and it is a long drive, so an early start is essential. Once inside the park you have a full day of game drives across the plains, with lunch in the park.

In the late afternoon you continue to your lodge in the Taita Hills area. After checking in, you can enjoy dinner and an evening watching the floodlit waterhole, where elephants and buffalo often come to drink after dark. It is one of the most atmospheric parts of the trip, and you can watch from the comfort of the lodge.

Day 2: Taita Hills sanctuary and return to the coast

Your second day begins with a sunrise game drive in the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, when the air is cool and the animals are on the move. You then return to the lodge for breakfast. After a final game drive you head back to the coast, arriving at your hotel by late afternoon.

Wildlife on a 2 Day Tsavo Safari

Tsavo is a wild and spacious park, and its animals are spread out, so game viewing rewards patience and a good guide. In two days you can expect to see a good range of species.

Red elephants and big herds

Tsavo’s elephants are famous for their colour. They dust-bathe in the park’s red soil, which coats their skin and helps to protect it from sun and insects, so they look red or orange rather than grey. Look for family herds at waterholes and along rivers, and watch the calves as they play. Buffalo, zebra, giraffe, waterbuck and several kinds of antelope live on the plains.

Lions and other predators

Tsavo is the home of the legendary man-eating lions of history, and today lions are still present, though they can be harder to spot than in the Mara because the bush is thicker and the park is larger. Your driver-guide will look for signs such as fresh tracks, alarm calls and the behaviour of other animals. Leopards and cheetahs are seen less often.

The floodlit waterhole

The lodge overlooks a floodlit waterhole, so you can watch animals come to drink after dark without leaving the terrace. Elephants and buffalo are the most regular visitors. It is a calm, rewarding way to end the day, and it is especially popular with children.

Is a 2 Day Tsavo Safari Worth It?

Yes, if your time is limited but you want to see more than a day trip allows. Two days gives you three game drives, including sunset and sunrise, which is enough to see elephants, buffalo and usually lions. Compared with a day trip, you spend less of the day on the road and more of it watching animals.

If you have more time, our Tsavo East and West safari covers both halves of the park, and our Tsavo safari guide explains how the two parks differ.

Best Time for a 2 Day Tsavo Safari

The safari runs all year. The dry months, from late June to October and from January to February, are best for wildlife, because animals gather at rivers and waterholes and the bush is thinner. The green months are quieter and lush, with excellent birdlife, though some tracks can be muddy.

  • June to October: dry season, with the best game viewing.
  • January to February: hot and dry, with good sightings.
  • March to May: long rains, green scenery and fewer visitors.
  • November to December: short rains and good birding.

How Much Does a 2 Day Tsavo Safari Cost?

This 2 day Tsavo safari starts from USD 420 per adult sharing. The final cost depends on the season, the lodge and the size of your group, and the cost per person falls when more guests share the private vehicle. Park fees for Tsavo East and Taita Hills are included, as are your hotel transfers and lodge night. For a wider budgeting guide, see how much an African safari costs.

  • Hotel pick-up and drop-off on the south or north coast
  • 1 night lodge accommodation, full board

Joining a 2 Day Tsavo Safari from the Coast

We collect guests from the south coast, Mombasa and the north coast, so you can join whether you are staying in Diani, Mombasa, Watamu or Malindi. Pick-up times from Watamu and Malindi are earlier because of the longer drive. Because the trip starts and ends at your hotel, you do not need to arrange any transport yourself. We confirm your pick-up time a day or two before departure.

Many guests choose a safari as part of a longer coast holiday. You can see ideas on our Kenya beach experience page, and our Kenya safari packages include longer routes from Nairobi and the coast.

Who Is a 2 Day Tsavo Safari For?

This trip is ideal for beach holidaymakers who want a night in the bush without a long commitment. It suits couples, friends and families, and children aged about 5 and older usually enjoy it, especially the waterhole in the evening. If you are travelling with children, our Kenya family safari packages may give you more ideas. Tsavo is a malaria area, so ask your doctor about precautions before you travel.

Tsavo East and Taita Hills Compared

The two halves of this 2 day Tsavo safari feel very different. Tsavo East is vast and open, with long views across the plains and a sense of true wilderness. You spend the day moving between waterholes and river sections, and the elephants and big herds are the main reward.

The Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary is smaller and greener, set at the foot of the hills, and it is a gentler, more intimate place to watch wildlife. The sunrise drive there is quiet and relaxed, and it gives you a chance to see the landscape in the cool light of early morning. Together, the two areas give you a rounded picture of Tsavo in just two days.

Tips for a Better 2 Day Tsavo Safari

  • Be ready for an early start on day one, since the drive from the coast is long.
  • Keep your camera and binoculars within reach, because the best sightings are often brief.
  • Ask your driver-guide to explain what you are seeing, because Tsavo’s bush hides its animals well.
  • Spend time on the lodge terrace after dinner to watch the floodlit waterhole.

Photography on a 2 Day Tsavo Safari

Tsavo’s red soil and big skies make dramatic photographs. Red elephants against green bush are a classic image, and the golden light of late afternoon and early morning gives the richest colour. A lens of 200 to 400 mm suits most wildlife, while a wide lens helps with landscapes. Dust can settle on equipment, so keep a cloth handy and your camera in a bag between stops. At the lodge, the floodlit waterhole gives you a chance to try low-light photography from a comfortable position.

What to Pack for a 2 Day Tsavo Safari

  • Comfortable clothes in neutral colours, plus a warm layer for the early drive.
  • A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
  • Insect repellent.
  • A camera, spare batteries and binoculars.
  • Swimwear, if your lodge has a pool.
  • A small overnight bag, since you leave the rest of your luggage at your beach hotel.

Visas, Health and Safety

Most visitors need a Kenya eTA before arrival, so apply online ahead of your trip and check the latest rules for your nationality. Malaria is present in much of Kenya, including Tsavo, so speak to your doctor, and take out travel insurance that covers medical evacuation. Your driver-guide is experienced and will brief you on safety in the park. For official information, visit the Kenya Wildlife Service and Magical Kenya.
