We are a Nairobi-based safari company, and small groups are the heart of what we do: friends travelling together, families of four to six, photography buddies and solo travellers who prefer good company. This guide explains what a small group safari in Kenya really means, why it beats a large tour, where to go, what it costs and which of our itineraries suit small groups best.
✅ Small Group Safari Kenya: The Quick Answer
- Group size: usually 2–8 travellers, fitting in one or two safari vehicles with a window seat each.
- Two types: a private small group (your own friends or family) or a joining departure (travellers who meet on the trip).
- Best places: Masai Mara conservancies, Laikipia, Samburu and Amboseli.
- Typical prices: our small group itineraries start from about USD $1,100 per adult for 4 days in the Masai Mara.
- Why choose it: more flexibility, better photography and a more personal experience than a big tour.

What Is a Small Group Safari in Kenya?
There is no official definition, but in the Kenyan safari industry a small group safari usually means a party of two to eight people travelling together in one or two 4×4 vehicles. Compare that with large group tours, where 20 or more travellers move between parks in minibuses or coaches and eat at big lodges on a fixed timetable.
Small groups come in two forms:
- Private small group safari: you bring the group — friends, family or colleagues — and the trip runs only for you, on your dates and at your pace.
- Joining small group safari: individual travellers and couples book seats on a set departure and share a vehicle with people they meet on the trip.
Most of the small group safaris we run are private, because groups value choosing their own dates, camps and daily rhythm.
Why a Small Group Safari Beats a Big Tour
Kenya’s wildlife is the same for everyone, but the way you experience it changes completely with group size.
A window seat and a clear view for everyone
With a small group, every traveller sits by a window and stands up through the pop-up roof without jostling for space. Nobody misses the cheetah because they were in the middle seat.
Flexibility at every sighting
On a big tour the bus leaves when the schedule says so. On a small group safari, the group decides. Stay two hours with a lion pride, leave early for a sundowner, or skip lunch at camp to wait for a river crossing.
A guide who knows your interests
A guide looking after four people learns quickly who loves birds, who wants big cats and who needs a slower pace. That personal attention is what turns a good game drive into a great one.
Quieter, more intimate camps
Small groups fit easily into boutique tented camps with only a handful of tents, where large tours simply cannot stay. That means candlelit dinners, campfire conversations and real silence at night.
Better photography
Fewer people means more room to move, steadier shots and a driver who positions the vehicle for the light. Our Masai Mara photography guide explains how to make the most of it.
Private vs Joining Small Group Safaris
Both are small group safaris, but they suit different travellers. This table shows the main differences.
| Feature | Private small group | Joining small group |
|---|---|---|
| Who travels | Your own friends, family or colleagues | Travellers who meet on the trip |
| Dates | Any dates you choose | Fixed departure dates |
| Itinerary | Fully customisable | Set route |
| Vehicle | Yours alone | Shared with other guests |
| Price per person | Falls as your group grows | Fixed seat price |
| Best for | Friends, families, clubs | Solo travellers and couples on a budget |

Best Places for a Small Group Safari in Kenya
Some parks are crowded at peak times; others are made for small groups. These are our favourite destinations for a small group safari.
Masai Mara conservancies
The private conservancies bordering the Masai Mara National Reserve are on land owned by Maasai families and leased for low-impact tourism. They limit the number of tourist beds and the number of vehicles allowed at a sighting, and they offer off-road driving, night drives and guided walks that are not allowed in the main reserve. For a small group safari, they are hard to beat. Compare the options in our guides to the Masai Mara reserve vs conservancies and Mara North vs Naboisho vs Olare Motorogi, and learn more from the Maasai Mara Wildlife Conservancies Association.
Laikipia and Ol Pejeta
North of Mount Kenya, Laikipia’s private ranches and conservancies offer rhinos, wild dogs, horseback and walking safaris, and very few other vehicles. See our Loisaba Conservancy guide and our comparison of Ol Pejeta vs Lewa.
Samburu
Hot, wild and less visited, Samburu is home to the “Samburu Special Five”: Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, gerenuk and Somali ostrich. Read our guide to the best time to visit Samburu.
Amboseli
Big-tusked elephants beneath Mount Kilimanjaro make Amboseli a favourite for photographers. Staying in a private concession outside the park keeps things quiet. See our comparison of the Masai Mara vs Amboseli.

Sample 5-Day Itinerary for a Small Group
Here is how a typical five-day trip for four to six travellers might look, combining the Rift Valley lakes with the Masai Mara. We adjust every day to your group’s interests and pace.
- Day 1 – Nairobi to Lake Naivasha: pick-up in Nairobi, a stop at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint, then an afternoon boat ride among hippos and fish eagles on Lake Naivasha.
- Day 2 – Lake Nakuru: a full day in Lake Nakuru National Park looking for white and black rhinos, Rothschild’s giraffes, tree-climbing lions and flamingos.
- Day 3 – Into the Masai Mara: drive to the Mara, settle into a tented camp and head out on an afternoon game drive as the light turns golden.
- Day 4 – Full day in the Mara: an early start for big cats, an optional sunrise balloon flight, a bush picnic lunch and an evening sundowner with the group.
- Day 5 – Return to Nairobi: a final morning game drive, then the drive or a short flight back to Nairobi.
This route follows our 5-day Masai Mara, Nakuru and Naivasha safari, which can be upgraded to conservancy camps or shortened to suit your dates.
What Camp Life Is Like for a Small Group
Small groups usually stay in tented camps with between eight and twenty tents, many with en-suite bathrooms, hot showers and verandas facing the bush. Meals are often taken together at a long table, and many camps will set up a private dinner or a bush breakfast for a group of friends or family. Evenings are spent around the campfire swapping the day’s sightings before an askari walks you back to your tent. To understand what to expect, read our guide to tented camps vs lodges in Kenya.
How Much Does a Small Group Safari Cost?
The cost of a small group safari depends on four main things.
- Group size: the vehicle and guide cost the same for two or six people, so each person pays less as the group grows. Four to six travellers is often the best value.
- Camp level: moving from mid-range lodges to luxury conservancy camps has the biggest effect on price.
- Season: in 2026 the Masai Mara National Reserve charges non-resident adults around USD $100 per day from January to June and USD $200 per day from July to December.
- Transport: road safaris are cheaper; fly-in safaris save time but add flight costs.
For detailed figures, see our Kenya safari cost guide, our Masai Mara safari cost guide and our Kenya national park fees for 2026. Official park rates are published by the Kenya Wildlife Service.
Who Is a Small Group Safari Best For?
- Friends travelling together: share a vehicle, split costs and enjoy evenings around the campfire.
- Families: a family of four to six fits one vehicle, so children can stand up, ask questions and take breaks when they need to. See our Kenya family safari guide.
- Solo travellers: a small group gives company without the crowds — read our solo female safari safety guide.
- Older travellers: a gentler pace, shorter drives and more comfortable camps. See our guide to a Kenya safari for seniors.
- Photographers: space to work and a driver who positions the vehicle for the best angle and light.
- First-time safari-goers: a guide with time to explain animal behaviour, tracks and bird calls.
When to Go on a Small Group Safari
July to October brings the Great Migration to the Masai Mara, but also the most visitors. That is exactly when a small group safari in a private conservancy pays off, because you avoid the busiest sightings in the main reserve. January to March and June are dry, green and quieter, with lower reserve fees. April and May bring the long rains and the best prices.
Small groups still need to book early for peak dates, because boutique camps have very few tents. Read our guide to the best time to book a Kenya group safari, our best time to visit the Masai Mara and our honest green season safari pros and cons.
Tips for a Great Small Group Safari
- Agree on priorities early: decide together whether the group cares most about big cats, the migration, photography, culture or relaxation.
- Pick the right vehicle layout: with six or more people, consider two vehicles so everyone has space and early risers can head out first.
- Pack soft bags: light aircraft and safari vehicles have limited space. See our safari luggage weight limits guide and Kenya safari packing list.
- Add an experience: a Masai Mara balloon safari, a walking safari or a night game drive is easier to arrange for a small group.
- Know the etiquette: read our Kenya safari etiquette and tipping guide.
- Sort your paperwork: every traveller needs a Kenya eTA from the official Kenya eTA portal — see our Kenya entry requirements guide.

Usually two to eight travellers. That fits one or two safari vehicles, with a window seat for everyone and room to stand through the pop-up roof.

Often, yes. Vehicle and guide costs are shared, so four to six people travelling together usually pay less per person than a couple travelling alone.

The private Masai Mara conservancies are our top choice, thanks to limited vehicles, off-road driving, night drives and guided walks. Laikipia, Samburu and Amboseli are excellent too.

July to October for the Great Migration, ideally in a conservancy to avoid crowds. January to March and June offer quieter parks and lower reserve fees.
