A 6 hour layover in Nairobi is just long enough for a short game drive in Nairobi National Park, if you land in daylight, hold an approved eTA and your bags are checked through. Expect about one to one and a half hours inside the park, entering at East Gate, 15 to 25 minutes from JKIA. Stay airside at night.
Sense of Adventure is a Nairobi-based safari company on Thika Road, and short connections are some of the trips we plan most carefully. This guide gives you an hour-by-hour itinerary for morning, midday and afternoon landings, what you can realistically see, the costs, what to carry, what does not fit, and the airside plan for night-time connections.

Is a 6 Hour Layover in Nairobi Enough to Leave the Airport?
Yes, but only just, and only in daylight. Six hours is the shortest connection on which we would recommend leaving JKIA.
The reason a 6 hour layover in Nairobi is so tight is simple arithmetic. About an hour goes on getting off the plane, through immigration and out to your driver. Around half an hour each way goes on the drives. Three hours go on the return buffer before an international flight. On a 6 hour layover in Nairobi, that leaves roughly one to one and a half hours of free time.
That is not long, but a 6 hour layover in Nairobi is still enough to see real wildlife. JKIA is one of the few airports in the world with a national park almost next door. Our separate guide on how much layover time you need to leave JKIA explains each part of the calculation in detail.
Three conditions for a 6 hour layover in Nairobi
First, you need an approved eTA before you board, because Kenya does not issue them on arrival. Second, your bags should be checked through to your final destination, so you leave with hand luggage only. Third, your free window must fall in daylight, roughly 6am to 6pm. If any of these is missing, stay in the terminal.
Before You Fly: Paperwork for a Short Layover
Every traveller who passes immigration needs to be approved in advance. This is the step that decides whether a 6 hour layover in Nairobi is possible at all.
Most visitors apply on the official portal at etakenya.go.ke. It lists a transit eTA at USD 20 and a standard eTA at USD 30, and applications are generally processed within three business days. Apply at least two weeks before you travel.
From 5 October 2026, most visitors entering Kenya must also buy the government’s travel health insurance, reported at about USD 44 per adult and bought during the eTA application. East African Community citizens and most African nationals are exempt from the eTA. For the full rules, read our guide Can you leave JKIA on a layover?
Morning Arrival Itinerary (Best Option)
A dawn or early-morning landing is the ideal 6 hour layover in Nairobi. The light is soft, the air is cool and predators are still active.
Example: land at 6:00am, depart at 12:00 noon
- 6:00am: land, taxi to the gate and walk to immigration. Follow the arrivals signs, not the transfer signs.
- 6:15am to 6:50am: immigration and customs with hand luggage only.
- 6:55am: meet your guide in the arrivals hall and walk to the vehicle.
- 7:15am: enter Nairobi National Park at East Gate. Park fees are paid electronically.
- 7:15am to 8:30am: game drive across the open plains, looking for rhinos, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, ostriches and, with luck, lions.
- 8:30am: leave the park. Morning rush hour on the main roads can slow the drive.
- 9:00am: arrive back at the departures terminal, three hours before your flight.
On a morning 6 hour layover in Nairobi, lions are most likely to be moving and rhinos often graze in the open. On this schedule, you also miss the worst of the heat. Bring a fleece, as Nairobi sits at around 1,600 to 1,800 metres and dawn can be cool.
Midday Arrival Itinerary
A late-morning or midday landing still works for a 6 hour layover in Nairobi, though the wildlife is usually quieter in the heat of the day.
Example: land at 11:00am, depart at 5:00pm
- 11:00am: land and head to immigration.
- 11:55am: meet your guide and drive to East Gate.
- 12:15pm to 1:30pm: game drive. Giraffes, zebras and antelope are easy to find at midday; big cats often rest in the shade.
- 1:30pm: leave the park and head back to JKIA, with lunchtime traffic in mind.
- 2:00pm: arrive at the terminal, three hours before departure, and have lunch airside.
A midday 6 hour layover in Nairobi rewards patience. Your guide will scan shady spots and waterholes, and the clear light is good for photos of giraffes with the city skyline behind them.
Afternoon Arrival Itinerary
An afternoon landing is the hardest 6 hour layover in Nairobi to use well. The park runs in daylight, and evening traffic builds from about 4:30pm.
Example: land at 2:00pm, depart at 8:00pm
- 2:00pm: land and clear immigration.
- 2:55pm: meet your guide and drive to East Gate.
- 3:15pm to 4:15pm: late-afternoon game drive, as animals start to move again in cooler air.
- 4:15pm: leave the park early to beat the evening rush on the roads near the airport.
- 5:00pm: arrive at the terminal, three hours before departure.
If you land after about 2:30pm on a 6 hour layover in Nairobi, we usually advise staying airside. The drive would be too short to enjoy, and evening traffic adds real risk of missing your flight. For more on wildlife timing, see our guide to the best time to visit Nairobi National Park.

What You Can See on a 6 Hour Layover in Nairobi
In an hour or so on the plains during a 6 hour layover in Nairobi, most visitors see several species. Nairobi National Park holds lions, leopards, buffalo, black and white rhinos, giraffes, zebras, hippos and more than 400 bird species.
- Rhinos: the park is an important rhino sanctuary, and sightings are frequent on the open plains.
- Giraffes: Maasai giraffes browse the acacias, often with the city skyline behind them.
- Zebras, buffalo and antelope: common across the grasslands, especially in the dry seasons.
- Lions: present but never guaranteed. Early mornings give the best chance.

Elephants do not live in the park. If baby elephants are on your list, you need a longer layover for the Sheldrick nursery. Learn more in our guides to the rhinos of Nairobi National Park and the park’s lions.

What Does Not Fit Into Six Hours
Some of Nairobi’s best-known sights need more time than a 6 hour layover in Nairobi allows. It is better to know now than to rush and risk your flight.
Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant nursery
The nursery opens to the public for one hour only, from 11am to 12 noon, and visits must be booked in advance by email. Same-day bookings are not possible. Fitting it in usually needs a layover of about ten hours with a morning arrival. Details are on the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust website.
Giraffe Centre and Karen
The Giraffe Centre in Langata is open from 9am to 5pm, and the centre suggests one and a half to two hours for a visit. Add the drive from the airport and it no longer fits alongside a game drive. Karen’s museums, cafés and craft shops are also best saved for a longer stop.
Nairobi city centre
The Nairobi Expressway makes the city centre quicker to reach outside peak hours, but city sights need more than an hour. If you prefer culture, choose a longer layover and book our Nairobi city tour.
Staying Airside: The Plan for Night Connections
If your 6 hour layover in Nairobi falls at night, or your eTA is not approved, the airport is the right place to be. Use the time to rest properly.
- Lounges: JKIA has airline and independent lounges with seating, showers in some, food and Wi-Fi. Access and prices vary, so check your airline or lounge membership.
- Eat well: a proper meal and plenty of water helps with jet lag on long journeys.
- Stay near your gate: check departure screens regularly, as gates can change.
- Sleep in short blocks: set an alarm on your phone and ask a travel companion to keep watch.
Our sister guide on things to do on a long JKIA layover covers the airport options in more detail, and the Kenya Airports Authority publishes official airport information.
What to Carry for a Short Layover Game Drive
Travel light on a 6 hour layover in Nairobi. You will be in and out of a vehicle and back through airport security within a few hours.
- Passport, eTA approval, insurance confirmation and onward boarding pass.
- A phone with your guide’s number saved and some battery left, plus a power bank.
- A light fleece or jacket for early mornings, and sunglasses and a hat for midday.
- Sunscreen in a container that meets airport liquid rules.
- Binoculars or a camera with a zoom lens, if you have one.
- A bank card for park fees and some small notes for tips.
- A refillable water bottle, empty before security.
How to Book a 6 Hour Layover in Nairobi

- Confirm your bags: ask your airline whether they are checked through to your final destination.

6 Hour Layover in Nairobi FAQs
Is a 6 hour layover in Nairobi enough to see animals?
Yes, if you land in daylight with an approved eTA and your bags checked through. After immigration, the short drive to East Gate and a three-hour return buffer, you have about one to one and a half hours in Nairobi National Park. That is usually enough to see rhinos, giraffes, zebras and buffalo.
How far is Nairobi National Park from JKIA?
Very close. East Gate, the airport-side entrance, is about 15 to 25 minutes from the terminals by road outside rush hour. Weekday traffic from roughly 6:30am to 9:30am and 4:30pm to 7:30pm can slow the drive, so we plan extra time when your return falls in those windows.
Can I see the baby elephants on a six-hour layover?
Usually not. The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust nursery opens to the public from 11am to 12 noon only, and visits must be booked in advance by email. Combined with immigration and the return buffer, that normally needs a layover of about ten hours with a morning arrival.
Do I need a visa for a 6 hour layover in Nairobi?
If you stay airside, no. If you leave the airport, most nationalities need an approved eTA before boarding, as Kenya does not issue them on arrival. The official portal lists a transit eTA at USD 20. From 5 October 2026, most visitors entering Kenya also need government travel health insurance.
What should I do on a night-time layover in Nairobi?
Stay airside. Nairobi National Park operates in daylight only, and evening traffic adds risk for little reward. Use a lounge, have a proper meal and rest near your gate. If your layover runs into the early morning, ask us whether a dawn game drive could fit before your flight.
How much does a 6 hour layover in Nairobi cost?
Budget USD 20 for a transit eTA, about USD 44 for the government travel health insurance, and USD 80 for adult park entry at non-resident rates. A private vehicle and guide is quoted to your flight times. Tips are at your discretion. Check current fees before you travel, as they can change.
What if my inbound flight is late?
A delay shortens your free time minute for minute. We track your flight and shorten or cancel the game drive if needed, because catching your onward flight always comes first. If the delay leaves less than about five hours on the ground, staying in the terminal is the sensible choice.
