Best Time to Book a Kenya Group Safari from the UK and Europe (2027 Guide)

Sense of Adventure safari vehicle in Kenya ready for a private game drive

The best time to book a Kenya group safari from the UK or Europe is earlier than most people expect. A couple can often find space at a good Masai Mara camp three months out. A group of eight, ten or sixteen cannot. Groups need several rooms in the same camp on the same nights, enough safari vehicles with a window seat for everyone, and flights where the whole party sits on the same aircraft. Those three things sell out long before the wildebeest arrive.

We plan safaris for friends, families, clubs and corporate teams flying in from London, Manchester, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris, Zurich and beyond. This guide sets out exactly when to book each season, how UK and European school holidays change the deadlines, what group bookings involve that couples never deal with, and which of our packages work best for groups.

✅ Kenya Group Safari Booking: The Quick Answer

  • Migration season (July–October): Book 9–12 months ahead. For August, aim for the previous summer or autumn.
  • Christmas and New Year: Book 9–12 months ahead; the best Mara camps fill by early in the year.
  • Easter and February half-term: Book 6–9 months ahead.
  • Green season (November, January–March, June): 4–6 months is usually enough, and rates are lower.
  • Long rains (April–May): Often bookable 2–3 months out, with the best value of the year.
  • Groups of 10+: Add 2–3 months to every deadline above, because you need multiple rooms, vehicles and seats together.

Why a Kenya Group Safari Needs Booking Earlier

The wildlife on a Kenya group safari is the same whether you travel as two or twelve. The logistics are not. Three bottlenecks decide how early a group must commit.

Rooms in the same camp

Many of the most loved Masai Mara and conservancy camps have between 8 and 20 tents in total. A couple needs one of them; a Kenya group safari for ten needs five or six on exactly the same nights. Triple rooms and family tents are scarcer still. In July, August and over Christmas, a block of rooms in one camp is often gone 9–12 months ahead, even when single tents appear free later.

Vehicles and guides

Every guest on our safaris gets a guaranteed window seat in a pop-up roof 4×4 or Land Cruiser. A larger Kenya group safari therefore needs two or three vehicles and the same number of experienced guides, all held for the same dates. In peak season the best guides are booked months ahead. If you are flying between parks, light aircraft seats and luggage limits matter too — see our guide to safari luggage weight limits on small aircraft.

Flights for the whole party

Getting ten people on one flight from London or a European hub is far easier a year out than three months out, when only scattered, expensive seats remain. Most airlines treat 10 or more passengers as a group booking, handled through a dedicated group desk with its own fares and name-change rules, so it pays to start early.

Booking Around UK School Holidays

Most UK families planning a Kenya group safari are tied to school holidays, and those dates create the sharpest demand spikes. Exact dates differ by council and school (Scotland breaks up in late June), so check yours. As an example, Oxfordshire’s 2026–27 calendar runs as follows:

  • October half-term (26–30 October 2026): End of migration season with superb predator action. Book by early in the year before.
  • Christmas (21 December 2026 onwards): One of the hardest weeks to secure group space. Book 10–12 months ahead — our Kenya Christmas safari guide explains why.
  • February half-term (15–19 February 2027): Dry green season with newborn animals and lower park fees. Book by the previous autumn.
  • Easter (30 March–9 April 2027): Falls just before the long rains, so conditions are usually good. Book 6–9 months ahead.
  • Summer (from about 22 July 2027): Peak migration and peak demand. For a summer 2027 Kenya group safari, the ideal time to book is now — autumn 2026.

Booking Around European Holidays

European groups have one advantage over UK groups: summer holidays are spread more widely. That spreading also means Kenya’s camps stay busy from late June to mid-September.

  • Germany: Summer holidays are staggered by state, from late June to mid-September. Groups from southern states (Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg) travel latest, overlapping with peak river crossings.
  • Netherlands and Belgium: Regional summer dates run through July and August, with autumn holidays in October.
  • France and Spain: July and August dominate, with the Toussaint break around late October and early November.
  • Italy and Switzerland: Italian schools break from mid-June, which makes June and early July attractive for less crowded Mara trips.
  • Scandinavia: Summer holidays start around midsummer and end in mid-August, a great fit for July safaris.

Whatever the country, the rule is the same: if your Kenya group safari falls between July and October, start planning the year before.

Peak Season vs Green Season for Groups

The deadline for your Kenya group safari depends heavily on which season you choose, and so does your budget.

Peak season (July–October)

This is the Great Migration in the Masai Mara, with dramatic Mara River crossings and big-cat action. It is also when the Masai Mara National Reserve charges its high-season fee: in 2026, around USD $200 per non-resident adult per day from July to December, against USD $100 from January to June. For a group of ten on a four-night Mara safari, that difference alone adds thousands of dollars. Read more in our Great Migration Kenya guide and our Kenya national park fees for 2026.

Green season (November, January–March, June)

Landscapes are lush, the resident Mara wildlife is still excellent, crowds are thin and camp rates drop. For a Kenya group safari on a budget or with flexible dates, this is often the smartest choice. Our honest green season safari pros and cons will help you decide.

Long rains (April–May)

The cheapest time to travel, with the shortest booking window. Some camps close for maintenance and roads can be muddy, but groups who don’t mind afternoon showers get superb value.

Flights From the UK and Europe

Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is well connected to Europe, which makes Kenya one of the easiest safari destinations for groups to reach.

  • From London: Kenya Airways flies non-stop from Heathrow and, since July 2025, from Gatwick, with an overnight flight of about 8.5 hours.
  • From Amsterdam: KLM and Kenya Airways connect Schiphol with Nairobi, with good feeder flights from regional UK and European airports.
  • From Paris, Frankfurt, Brussels, Zurich and Istanbul: Air France, Lufthansa, Brussels Airlines, Swiss and Turkish Airlines all serve Nairobi directly or with one stop.
  • Via the Gulf: Emirates and Qatar Airways connect most UK and European cities to Nairobi through Dubai or Doha.

For a Kenya group safari, book flights soon after confirming the land arrangements, and always before paying the balance on camps. Our Nairobi JKIA airport guide covers arrival, transfers and connections.

Private vs Shared Group Safaris

“Group safari” can mean two quite different things, and the choice affects both price and booking timing.

  • Private group safari: your own party — friends, family, a club or a team — with your own vehicles, guide and flexible daily schedule. Larger private groups share costs, so the per-person price often falls as numbers rise.
  • Shared or joining safari: individual travellers combined into a set departure with strangers. It suits solo travellers on tight budgets, but you lose control over dates, pace and who sits beside you.

Most UK and European clients who book a Kenya group safari with us choose the private option. Our guides to private vs group safaris in Kenya and private group safaris to Kenya compare the two in detail. Travelling solo within a group? Read about the single supplement on safari.

Deposits, Payments and Group Paperwork

Booking early doesn’t mean paying everything early. A typical Kenya group safari is secured with a deposit of around 20–30%, with the balance due 30–60 days before departure, and staged payments are available. Our guide to safari deposits and payment plans explains the details, and our Kenya safari booking guide walks through each step.

  • Name a group leader: one person to collect passport names, dietary needs and room pairings speeds everything up.
  • Agree the budget first: mixed budgets within a group are the most common cause of delay. Decide on the camp level before requesting quotes.
  • Kenya eTA: every traveller, including children, needs an Electronic Travel Authorisation from the official Kenya eTA portal. The fee is around USD $30; apply at least two weeks before departure. See our Kenya entry requirements guide.
  • Health: check vaccinations and malaria advice on NHS Fit for Travel and current advice on the UK government’s Kenya travel advice page.
  • Insurance: buy it as soon as you pay the deposit, so cancellation cover starts immediately. Our Kenya travel insurance guide explains what to look for.

How to Plan a Kenya Group Safari Step by Step

Follow these steps in order and your Kenya group safari will come together smoothly, without the last-minute scramble for rooms and seats.

  1. Agree dates and a rough budget (12+ months out for peak season): settle the travel window, number of nights and camp level before anything else.
  2. Request a proposal: send us the group size, ages, room pairings and interests, and we check live availability for your dates.
  3. Confirm with a deposit: a deposit holds the camps, vehicles and guides for your whole party.
  4. Book flights and insurance: secure group fares and buy travel insurance straight after the deposit.
  5. Collect paperwork: passport names, eTAs, dietary needs and any medical information from every traveller.
  6. Pay the balance and finalise: the balance falls due 30–60 days before departure, when we send your final itinerary and packing list.

Before you travel, run through our Kenya safari checklist and Kenya safari packing list with the whole group.

Last-Minute Kenya Group Safari Bookings: Is It Still Possible?

Yes, with flexibility. Within three months of travel, a Kenya group safari can still find space if it is willing to split across two neighbouring camps, travel midweek, choose a conservancy instead of the main reserve, or shift by a few days. Green-season and long-rains dates are the easiest to book late. Peak-season August with ten people in a single small camp, however, is rarely possible inside six months.

If you are unsure whether your Kenya group safari dates are still open, message us before giving up on them. We check availability directly with camps every day and can often find an option that online searches miss.

Why UK and European Travellers Choose a Kenya Group Safari

Short overnight flights, English spoken everywhere, a time difference of just two or three hours, and the world’s most famous wildlife spectacle make Kenya the natural first safari for groups from the UK and Europe. Add a country with deep conservation roots — explore more on Magical Kenya, the official tourism site — and a Kenya group safari becomes the trip your friends, family or team talk about for years. Kenya Group Safari FAQs

How far in advance should I book a Kenya group safari?

For July–October or Christmas, book 9–12 months ahead. For green season, 4–6 months is usually enough, and for April–May, 2–4 months. Groups of 10 or more should add a further 2–3 months.

When is the cheapest time for a group safari in Kenya?

April and May are the cheapest months, followed by November and January to March. Masai Mara reserve fees are also half the price from January to June compared with July to December.

What is the best month for a Kenya group safari from the UK?

For the Great Migration, August and September are the classic months. For better value and fewer vehicles, February and late June are excellent choices that still fit UK holidays.

How much deposit is needed to book a group safari?

A deposit of around 20–30% usually secures the booking, with the balance due 30–60 days before travel. Staged payment plans are available.

How many people can travel in one safari vehicle?

We guarantee every guest a window seat, so a typical pop-up roof 4×4 carries up to six or seven people. Larger groups travel in two or more vehicles, each with its own guide.

Do UK and European travellers need a visa for Kenya?

Kenya no longer issues standard tourist visas to most visitors. Instead, each traveller needs an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA), applied for online before departure, costing around USD $30.

Can a large group stay in the same Masai Mara camp?

Yes, if you book early. Many camps have only 8–20 tents, so a group of ten may need a whole camp or a block of rooms reserved 9–12 months ahead in peak season.
