Nairobi layover luggage is simplest when your bags are checked through to your final destination: you leave them with the airline and carry only a day pack. On separate tickets, you collect your bags at JKIA, pass immigration with a Kenya eTA and either re-check them, store them or keep them with your driver while you explore.
We are Sense of Adventure, a Nairobi-based safari company at Mountain Mall on Thika Road, and Nairobi layover luggage is one of the first things layover guests ask us about. This guide explains what happens to your bags on one ticket and on separate tickets, where to leave them, what to carry, the rules on liquids, plastic bags and duty free, and how to plan for an onward safari flight.

✅ Nairobi Layover Luggage: The Quick Answer
- One ticket: bags are normally checked through. You do not touch them in Nairobi, even if you leave the airport.
- Separate tickets: you usually collect bags at JKIA and re-check them, so you must pass immigration with an approved eTA.
- Leaving the airport: carry a small day pack. On our private tours, any bags you have stay locked in the vehicle.
- Storage: left-luggage services have been reported at JKIA, but confirm on arrival; hotels and tour vehicles are more reliable options.
- Plastic bags: Kenya bans plastic carrier bags, and duty free bags brought into the country must be left at the point of entry.
- Onward safari flights: light aircraft usually limit you to 15 kg per person in a soft bag, including hand luggage.

Nairobi Layover Luggage: The First Question to Ask
The first question for any Nairobi layover luggage plan is whether your bags are checked through to your final destination. Everything else follows from that answer.
When you check in for your first flight, look at the bag tag or the receipt stuck to your boarding pass. If it shows the code of your final airport, such as ZNZ for Zanzibar or JRO for Kilimanjaro, your bags are checked through. If it shows NBO, your bags stop in Nairobi and you will have to collect them.
Ask the check-in agent to confirm, and take a photo of the bag tag receipt. That one photo solves most luggage problems if a bag goes astray.
Why it matters for leaving the airport
If your Nairobi layover luggage is checked through, leaving the airport is easy: you clear immigration with only a day pack and walk straight past the baggage carousels. If your bags stop in Nairobi, you must collect them, and you need a plan for where they go while you are out.
One Ticket vs Separate Tickets: What Happens to Your Bags
Your ticket type decides what happens to your Nairobi layover luggage, so check your booking before you plan the day.
| Situation | What happens to checked bags | Do you pass immigration? | What to plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| One ticket, same airline or partners | Checked through to final airport | Only if you choose to leave | Day pack only |
| One ticket, overnight connection | Usually checked through; some airlines differ | Yes, if you go to a hotel | Overnight kit in carry-on |
| Separate tickets | Collected at JKIA and re-checked | Yes, always | eTA, time to re-check, storage plan |
| Ending your trip in Nairobi | Collected at JKIA | Yes | Hotel or tour vehicle |
| Onward light-aircraft safari | Collected, often repacked into a soft bag | Yes | 15 kg soft bag, storage for the rest |
Some airlines will not check bags through on separate tickets, even when they are partners. Ask at your first check-in desk; if they cannot help, assume you will collect your bags in Nairobi.
Nairobi layover luggage on separate tickets
Separate tickets need more time. You collect your bags, clear customs, walk to departures, queue for check-in on the second airline and pass security and exit immigration again. Our guide to the layover time you need to leave JKIA shows how long each step takes. As a rule, allow at least three hours before the second flight, and more when several long-haul flights depart together.
What Happens to Your Bags if You Leave the Airport
Nothing happens to bags that are checked through: they stay with the airline and are loaded on your next flight while you are out.
Passengers often worry that leaving the airport will separate them from their luggage. On a single ticket, it will not. Your Nairobi layover luggage moves through the baggage system airside, and you rejoin it at your final destination. What you must not do is miss the onward flight, because airlines may offload bags of passengers who do not board.
You need an approved eTA from the official Kenya eTA portal to leave the terminal. From 5 October 2026, most visitors who enter Kenya also need the government travel health insurance. Our guide on whether you can leave JKIA on a layover covers both rules.
Where to Store Nairobi Layover Luggage
If your bags stop in Nairobi, you have four realistic places to leave your Nairobi layover luggage while you explore.
1. In your tour vehicle
This is the simplest option. On our private layover tours, your Nairobi layover luggage stays locked in the vehicle with your driver-guide, and you carry only a day pack into the park, the elephant nursery or the Giraffe Centre. The vehicle brings everything back to departures with you.
2. At a hotel near the airport
If you have booked a day room or an overnight stay, the hotel will hold your Nairobi layover luggage. Most hotels near JKIA also store bags for guests after check-out. Our guide to hotels near JKIA for an overnight layover compares the options.
3. Left-luggage services at JKIA
Left-luggage services have been reported near the arrivals area, with published rates starting at a few US dollars per bag per day. We could not confirm the current operator, opening hours or rules with the Kenya Airports Authority, so ask at an information desk when you land and do not build your Nairobi layover luggage plan around it.
4. Carry it with you
A small carry-on with wheels is fine as Nairobi layover luggage for a city visit, but not for a game drive or the elephant nursery. If you have large bags and no vehicle, choose a hotel or a tour that includes transport.

Carry-On Essentials for a Day Out in Nairobi
Keep your Nairobi layover luggage to one small bag that holds everything you need for the day, and nothing you would hate to lose.
- Passport, boarding pass and eTA approval: printed and on your phone. You need all three to re-enter departures.
- Travel health insurance confirmation: if you entered Kenya on or after 5 October 2026.
- Card and some US dollars: for tips and small purchases. Park fees are paid electronically.
- Phone, charger and power bank: Kenya uses UK-style Type G sockets.
- Light layer and sun hat: mornings can be cool and middays strong.
- Sunscreen and sunglasses: the sun is fierce at Nairobi’s altitude, even when it is cloudy.
- Empty water bottle: fill it after you leave the terminal.
- Medication: in your hand luggage, with prescriptions where relevant.
Keep valuables out of sight in the vehicle and when walking in town. For what to wear and bring on a game drive, see our Kenya safari packing list.

Security, Liquids and Duty Free on the Way Back
When you return to JKIA, you pass security again, so pack your Nairobi layover luggage with the second screening in mind.
- Terminal entry screening: bags are scanned as you enter the departures building.
- Check-in or document check: at your airline desk if you are on separate tickets or did not receive an onward boarding pass.
- Exit immigration: show your passport and boarding pass.
- Security before the gates: standard rules on liquids, gels and aerosols in hand luggage apply. Keep containers small and in a clear bag.
Anything you buy in Nairobi, such as honey, sauces or spirits, must go in checked luggage or be bought airside after security. If your Nairobi layover luggage is already checked through, that means buying liquids in the departure area instead.
Duty free bought on your first flight
If you bought liquids on your incoming flight or at your first airport and plan to leave JKIA, they may be confiscated at the security check when you return, even in a sealed bag. Buy duty free after your final security check in Nairobi instead.
Kenya’s Plastic Bag Ban and Other Customs Rules
Kenya has banned plastic carrier bags since 28 August 2017, and the rule matters for anyone passing immigration with shopping bags in their Nairobi layover luggage.
According to Kenya’s National Environment Management Authority, duty free shops at airports are treated as outside Kenyan territory, but travellers arriving in Kenya with duty free bags must leave them at the entry point. Pack duty free items into your hand luggage before you reach immigration, or use a fabric bag.
- Declare what you must: anything that may be prohibited or subject to duty must be declared at customs.
- Drones: the UK government’s Kenya entry requirements page says importing a drone without prior approval from the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority is illegal. Leave it at home or keep it checked through.
- Wildlife products: never buy items made from ivory, horn, shells or skins. Our Maasai Market Nairobi guide explains which souvenirs are fine.
Connecting to a Safari? The 15 kg Soft Bag Rule
If your layover leads into a fly-in safari, your Nairobi layover luggage needs a second plan, because light aircraft have much tighter rules than long-haul jets.
Most small planes to safari airstrips allow about 15 kg per person, hand luggage included, in a soft bag without a frame or wheels. Hard suitcases often cannot be loaded. Many travellers repack their Nairobi layover luggage on arrival and leave the rest with their hotel or safari operator until they return.
Read our full guide to safari luggage weight limits on small aircraft before you pack, and check the limit with the airline named on your ticket.

Delayed or Lost Bags at JKIA
If a checked bag does not arrive, report it at your airline’s baggage services desk in the arrivals hall before you leave the airport.
The Kenya Airports Authority lost luggage page confirms that the airline is responsible for tracing and returning delayed bags. Items lost in the terminal are handled by the KAA lost and found office in the arrivals building. Items left on the aircraft are handled by the airline.
- Keep your bag tag receipt and boarding pass.
- Report the missing bag before leaving the baggage hall, and get a written reference number.
- Give the airline the address of your next hotel or final destination.
- Keep receipts for essentials you buy, as your airline or insurer may cover them.
This is one reason your Nairobi layover luggage should include a change of clothes and any medication in your carry-on, even on a short layover.
Your Step-by-Step Nairobi Layover Luggage Plan
Follow these steps and your Nairobi layover luggage will take care of itself.
- At booking: check whether all flights are on one ticket. If not, allow at least three hours before the second flight.
- At first check-in: confirm where your bags are tagged to and photograph the receipt.
- Before landing: move duty free and anything in plastic bags into your hand luggage.
- In Nairobi: if bags are checked through, walk past the carousels. If not, collect them and go to your driver, hotel or the second airline’s check-in.
- During the day: carry only a day pack with documents, card, water and a light layer.
- On return: arrive three hours before an international flight and buy liquids after security.
With eight daylight hours or more, our Nairobi layover tour includes airport pick-up and drop-off, and your bags stay locked in the vehicle all day. It is priced from USD 190 per adult sharing, with the final cost depending on season and group size. For a full-day plan, see our 12-hour layover in Nairobi itinerary.
Nairobi Layover Luggage FAQs
Do I have to collect my luggage on a layover in Nairobi?
Not if your journey is on one ticket and your bags are tagged to your final destination. They stay with the airline, even if you leave the airport. On separate tickets, Nairobi layover luggage is usually collected at JKIA, taken through immigration and re-checked with the second airline, so you need an eTA.
Can I leave my luggage at Nairobi airport while I go out?
Left-luggage services have been reported near the arrivals area at JKIA, with rates from a few dollars per bag per day. We could not confirm current hours or rules, so ask at an information desk on arrival. A hotel near the airport or a tour vehicle are more reliable options.
What happens to my checked bags if I leave JKIA on a layover?
Bags that are checked through stay airside and are loaded onto your onward flight while you are out. You collect them at your final destination as normal. Just make sure you are back at the terminal in good time, because bags of passengers who miss the flight may be offloaded.
Can I bring duty free bags into Kenya?
Kenya bans plastic carrier bags. The environment authority says duty free bags must be left at the point of entry if you bring them into the country. Move items into your hand luggage before immigration, and buy liquids after your final security check if you are leaving the airport.
How much hand luggage should I carry on a Nairobi layover tour?
A small day pack is the ideal Nairobi layover luggage for a tour. Carry your passport, boarding pass, eTA approval, a card, some US dollars, a phone and charger, sunscreen, a hat, a light layer and an empty water bottle. Larger bags can stay locked in the tour vehicle or with your hotel.
What if my bag does not arrive in Nairobi?
Report it at your airline’s baggage services desk in the arrivals hall before you leave the airport, and keep the written reference. The airline is responsible for tracing and delivering delayed bags. Give them your hotel address, and keep receipts for essentials you buy while you wait.
Can I take my big suitcase on a safari flight from Nairobi?
Usually not. Most light aircraft to safari airstrips allow about 15 kg per person, including hand luggage, in a soft bag without wheels or a frame. Repack in Nairobi and leave the rest with your hotel or safari operator until you return, and check the exact limit with your airline.
