The heat lifts off the soda flats as the road drops into the Rift. Beyond the pink-white crust of Lake Magadi, the Nguruman Escarpment rises blue on the horizon, and your Maasai guide points to fresh lion tracks in the sand by the Ewaso Ng’iro river. There is not another vehicle in sight.
Lake Magadi luxury lodge stays are found beyond the lake itself, in the community conservancies of Shompole and Olkiramatian in Kenya’s South Rift. The best are Lentorre Lodge, with private plunge pools and a sunken hide, and Shompole Wilderness, with overnight hides. Lentorre is about three and a half hours by road from Nairobi.
Sense of Adventure is a Nairobi-based safari company at Mountain Mall on Thika Road, licensed by Kenya’s Tourism Regulatory Authority (TRA1/47/C01/77087). We plan luxury Kenya safaris for travellers who want somewhere wild and quiet. This guide covers the South Rift’s best stays, with honest trade-offs, what is opening next, the best months and a sample plan.

🔥 Plan My South Rift Escape or call +254 799 160 081Why Choose a Lake Magadi Luxury Lodge?
A Lake Magadi luxury lodge gives you a rare thing in Kenya: big landscapes, real wildlife and almost no other visitors, within a morning’s drive of Nairobi.
Lake Magadi is a soda lake about 120 km south-west of Nairobi, fed by hot springs. As the water evaporates in the heat, it leaves a crust of trona that glows pink and white. Flamingos feed in the shallows when conditions suit them, and KWS includes Magadi in its Rift Valley flamingo counts.
Beyond the lake, where every Lake Magadi luxury lodge sits, the land opens into the Shompole and Olkiramatian conservancies, where Maasai families graze cattle alongside lion, leopard, cheetah and striped hyena. The Ewaso Ng’iro river and the Nguruman Escarpment add green forest, waterfalls and cool pools to the dry plains.
The honest trade-off: the South Rift is hot, game is wilder and less concentrated than in the Masai Mara, and the choice of lodges is small. This is a place for second-time safari-goers, walkers, photographers and anyone who values solitude over long checklists.
The Best Lake Magadi Luxury Lodge Options in the South Rift
Only two Lake Magadi luxury lodge options are open today, a third is announced, and one simple stay suits a budget. We checked each on its official website in November 2026 and left out camps we could not verify.
1. Lentorre Lodge: The Finest Lake Magadi Luxury Lodge
Why we love it: Lentorre Lodge sits in Olkiramatian Conservancy at the foot of the Nguruman Escarpment, near the Ewaso Ng’iro river. It has four large villas and two family villas with two en-suite rooms each, for a maximum of 16 guests. Every villa has a private plunge pool, and this Lake Magadi luxury lodge is family owned and run.
Best for: honeymooners, families and photographers. The moment you’ll remember: a night in The Hide, Lentorre’s sunken, air-conditioned photographic hide at a waterhole, opened in 2020 and sleeping two plus a bunk, as animals come to drink at eye level.
Practical facts: day and night drives (leopard, striped hyena, aardwolf), walks up the escarpment gorge to waterfalls, tubing on the river when levels allow, more than 350 bird species, baboon walks linked to a local research project, Maasai visits, bush dining and trips to Magadi and Natron. It is about a three-and-a-half-hour road transfer from Nairobi; its airstrip is about 40 minutes away. Rates are not published, so message us for current rates.
2. Shompole Wilderness: Hides, River Swims and Shompole Conservancy
Why we love it: Shompole Wilderness is an unfenced camp of six tents on wooden decks on the banks of the Ewaso Ng’iro, on Shompole community land beneath Mount Shompole. This Lake Magadi luxury lodge is run by the du Toit family, who have worked in the South Rift for more than 20 years, and it has a pool and flush toilets.
Best for: couples, walkers and photographers. The moment you’ll remember: a night in the Plains Hide or Kichaka Hide, which sleep up to four with no glass between you and the night, while carnivores move past unbaited.
Practical facts: day and night drives, tracking walks, plains runs, river swimming, tubing and kayaking when water allows, baboon walks at Lale’enok, Maasai home visits and SORALO conservation talks. A child’s tent can go on two of the verandas. Small children must stay with an adult at all times. Rates are sent on request, so ask us.

3. Shompole by Great Plains: Opening Soon
Why we are watching it: Great Plains Conservation is bringing a new Shompole camp to the conservancy where the famous original Shompole Lodge stood. Its official page gives different opening dates, from Christmas 2026 to June 2027, so we will confirm before quoting.
Best for: repeat safari-goers who want a new address. Background: the original Shompole Lodge opened in 2000 with community ownership and closed in 2011. Mongabay reported in 2022 that Great Plains had signed a 35-year lease with the Shompole community, with an annual lease and a per-guest conservancy fee.
Practical facts: tent numbers, child policy and rates are not yet on the official site. If you are planning for 2027, send us your dates and we will check the opening and availability for you.
4. Olorgesailie Bandas: A Simple Stop on the Road to Magadi
Why we include it: this is not a Lake Magadi luxury lodge, but the Olorgesailie Prehistoric Site, run by the National Museums of Kenya, has simple bandas about 90 km from Nairobi on Magadi Road. The site is famous for Acheulian hand axes and fossils around 1.2 million years old.
Best for: history lovers, students and budget travellers. The moment you’ll remember: walking among stone tools left where early humans dropped them, with the Rift Valley shimmering around you.
Practical facts: published non-resident banda rates are KSh 1,800 single and KSh 2,000 double for a deluxe banda. From May 2026, site entry is USD 8 per adult and USD 4 per child for non-African visitors. Facilities are basic, so we suggest it as a stop rather than a base.
A note on other names: we found no official websites for some camps advertised near Lake Magadi, so we have left them out. There is no Lake Magadi luxury lodge on the lakeshore itself.

The People Behind the Stay
Every Lake Magadi luxury lodge in the South Rift sits on Maasai community land, so your stay directly supports the people who share it with wildlife.
The South Rift Association of Land Owners (SORALO), founded in 2004, brings together Maasai landowners across 1.1 to 1.5 million hectares of rangeland between the Mara and Amboseli. SORALO estimates the landscape holds about 85 to 125 lions, around 50 wild dogs and 30 to 40 cheetah outside protected areas.
Lale’enok Resource Centre, owned by the Olkiramatian women’s group, is SORALO’s field base and a hub for local research. Lentorre lists SORALO, Lale’enok and Rebuilding the Pride as partners. Shompole Wilderness says 100% of its community bed-night and conservation fees go to the community, 87% of its staff are local and it co-funds 12 teachers.
The guides at each Lake Magadi luxury lodge are often Maasai men and women who grew up on this land. They read tracks, know where cattle and lions crossed overnight and explain how herders and predators live side by side.
Expert tip from our Nairobi team: book at least one walk with a Maasai guide. You will learn far more about the South Rift on foot than from a vehicle, and the cooler early morning is the best time to go.
South Rift Safari Experiences: Hides, Walks and Flamingos
A South Rift safari from a Lake Magadi luxury lodge mixes hides, walking, river swims and night drives in a way few Kenyan parks allow.
Hides and Night Drives
Both open Lake Magadi luxury lodge options have hides. Lentorre’s sunken hide puts you at eye level with animals at a waterhole, while Shompole Wilderness has two overnight hides on the plains and a bird hide in camp. Night drives on conservancy land can reveal striped hyena, aardwolf, caracal and leopard.
Lake Magadi, Hot Springs and Flamingos

From a Lake Magadi luxury lodge, a day out to the lake shows you the soda flats, hot springs and, when they are present, flamingos. Our Lake Magadi day trip guide covers the lake in detail. Note that the government suspended soda-ash mining at Magadi in July 2026, so we check road and town services before each trip.
Lake Natron Border Lodges: What to Know
We found no official lodge on the Kenyan side of Lake Natron; the lodges around Natron are in Tanzania. Lentorre offers trips towards Magadi and Natron, and we can advise on what is possible from the Kenyan side and on border rules if you want to continue into Tanzania.
Choosing by Traveller Type
The right Lake Magadi luxury lodge depends on how you like to travel and how adventurous you feel.
- Honeymooners: Lentorre’s plunge-pool villas. See our best honeymoon lodges in Kenya.
- Families: Lentorre, the most family-friendly Lake Magadi luxury lodge, with family villas and a children’s Maasai programme.
- Photographers: either lodge for the hides; see our sleep where lions roar guide.
- Walkers and active couples: Shompole Wilderness for tracking walks and plains runs.
- Seniors: Lentorre, with the option to fly in and an air-conditioned hide.
- Celebration groups: book Lentorre’s six villas or the whole of Shompole Wilderness.

How We’d Plan It: 5 Nights in the South Rift and the Mara
A Lake Magadi luxury lodge works well as the first, quiet part of a longer safari, before the big-game drama of the Mara.
- Day 1: leave Nairobi early, stop at Olorgesailie, then continue past Lake Magadi to Lentorre or Shompole Wilderness.
- Day 2: a guided walk at dawn, river swim at midday and a night drive or a night in a hide.
- Day 3: escarpment waterfall walk or a Magadi hot springs outing, then a sundowner.
- Days 4–5: fly to the Masai Mara for big cats.
- Day 6: fly back to Nairobi.
Short on time? Our Olorgesailie and Lake Magadi day trip shows the area in a day. For the next stop, see luxury lodges in the Masai Mara and Masai Mara safari packages.
We can build any of these lodges into a tailor-made private Kenya safari, subject to availability. See how we start trips on our Kenya safari from Nairobi page.
Best Time to Visit a Lake Magadi Luxury Lodge
The best months for a Lake Magadi luxury lodge are June to October and January to February, when the low-lying South Rift is cooler and drier.
- January–February: dry and hot by midday, with good wildlife near the river.
- March–May: the long rains; river levels rise and some tracks get difficult.
- June–October: the coolest, driest months and the most comfortable for walking.
- November–December: short rains, green grass and fewer visitors.
At any Lake Magadi luxury lodge, midday heat is the main challenge, so plan walks for dawn and late afternoon. See our Kenya weather by month guide for more.
🗓 Secure a Cool-Season South Rift Stay
June to October is the most comfortable time, and these small camps fill quickly. Send us your dates for a written quote with transfers and conservancy fees.
📝 Get My South Rift QuoteGetting There and Fees
Most guests reach a Lake Magadi luxury lodge by road in about three and a half hours from Nairobi, or by light aircraft to a nearby airstrip.
Road and Air
The Magadi Road to each Lake Magadi luxury lodge runs south-west from Nairobi past Olorgesailie to the lake, then on rougher tracks to the conservancies. Lentorre’s airstrip is about 40 minutes from the lodge. If you fly, read our safari luggage weight limits guide.
Shompole Conservancy and Other Fees
Shompole and Olkiramatian conservancy fees are not published separately; each Lake Magadi luxury lodge builds them into its rates and passes them to the community. Olorgesailie charges its own entry fee. There is no KWS park fee here, but if you add a national park later, see our Kenya national parks entrance fees 2026 guide.
What Is Included and What to Pack
A Lake Magadi luxury lodge sends rates on request, and what they cover varies, so we check every line before you book.
Ask your Lake Magadi luxury lodge whether drinks, hide nights, helicopter flights, river activities and conservancy fees are included. Our full board vs all-inclusive guide explains the terms. For pure relaxation, our Lake Naivasha luxury hotels guide covers a gentler Rift Valley stop.
What to Pack for the South Rift

- Light, breathable clothes in neutral colours and a wide-brimmed hat.
- Sturdy walking shoes and sandals you can get wet in the river.
- High-factor sunscreen and a refillable water bottle.
- A light fleece for night drives and hides.
- Binoculars for more than 350 bird species.
Expert tip from our Nairobi team: stay at least three nights at a Lake Magadi luxury lodge. The drive is long, and the real magic, a hide night, a river day and a dawn walk, needs time. Make sure your insurance includes emergency evacuation cover in this remote area, and read the UK government’s Kenya travel advice.
Lake Magadi Luxury Lodge FAQs
Is there a luxury lodge at Lake Magadi?
There is no luxury lodge on the shore of Lake Magadi itself. The closest luxury stays are beyond the lake in the South Rift conservancies: Lentorre Lodge in Olkiramatian and Shompole Wilderness on Shompole community land. Both offer drives, walks, hides and river activities, with day trips to the lake.
How far is Lake Magadi from Nairobi?
Lake Magadi is about 120 km south-west of Nairobi along the Magadi Road. The lodges in the Shompole and Olkiramatian conservancies lie further on, and Lentorre Lodge says its road transfer from Nairobi takes about three and a half hours. Light aircraft can fly to a nearby airstrip.
What wildlife can you see in the South Rift?
The South Rift has lion, leopard, cheetah, striped hyena, aardwolf, caracal, elephant and lesser kudu, plus more than 350 bird species. SORALO estimates around 85 to 125 lions and about 50 wild dogs live in its landscape outside protected areas. Game is wilder and more spread out than in the Mara.
When is the best time to visit Lake Magadi?
June to October is the best time to visit Lake Magadi and the South Rift, as it is the coolest and driest season and the most comfortable for walking. January and February are also dry but hotter. The long rains from March to May raise river levels and can make tracks difficult.
Can you sleep in a hide in the South Rift?
Yes. Lentorre Lodge has The Hide, a sunken air-conditioned photographic hide at a waterhole that sleeps two plus a bunk. Shompole Wilderness has two overnight hides on the plains, the Plains Hide and Kichaka Hide, which sleep up to four with no glass between you and the wildlife.
Is the Shompole lodge open?
Shompole Wilderness, a six-tent camp run by the du Toit family, is open. The new Shompole camp by Great Plains Conservation has been announced, but its official page gives opening dates from late 2026 to June 2027, so we confirm the latest status before quoting. The original Shompole Lodge closed in 2011.
Are there lodges on the Kenyan side of Lake Natron?
We found no official lodge on the Kenyan side of Lake Natron. The lodges around Natron are in Tanzania. From the South Rift, Lentorre Lodge offers trips towards Magadi and Natron, and we can advise on border rules if you want to continue your safari into northern Tanzania.
