The Three Parks — What Each Delivers
Serengeti National Park — 14,763 km² of Pure Wildlife
The Serengeti is one of the largest and richest savannah ecosystems in the world. Its 14,763 km² hold one of Africa’s biggest lion populations, year-round cheetah and leopard activity, and the annual passage of the Great Migration’s wildebeest, which number well over a million. The northern Serengeti (Kogatende, Lamai) produces the river crossings from July–October. The southern Serengeti (Ndutu, Kusini) hosts the calving season from January–March. Central Serengeti (Seronera) offers year-round big cat sightings. We recommend 3+ nights minimum.
Ngorongoro Conservation Area — The Big Five in One Day
The Ngorongoro Crater is a caldera of about 260 km² — a collapsed volcano whose walls form a natural enclosure holding one of the densest concentrations of large mammals on earth. Around 25,000 large animals are commonly estimated to live inside the crater: lion prides, black rhinos (among the most accessible wild black rhinos in Africa), elephant bulls, hippo pools, golden jackals, and big buffalo herds. A full day in the crater often produces all of the Big Five. UNESCO lists the Ngorongoro Conservation Area as a mixed natural and cultural World Heritage Site — the Maasai have lived in the conservation area for generations.
Tarangire National Park — Baobabs, Elephants & a Different Tanzania
Tarangire’s 2,850 km² of acacia woodland, baobab country and seasonal swamp sits about 120 km from Arusha — the logical first or last park on the northern circuit. Its ancient baobab trees, some believed to be many centuries old, create a landscape that looks unlike any other Tanzania park. In the dry season (June–October), the Tarangire River is the main permanent water in a vast area, drawing elephants in their thousands into some of the largest herds in East Africa. We recommend 2 nights.
The Standard 8-Night Northern Circuit Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive Kilimanjaro Airport. Drive to Arusha (1 hr). Overnight Arusha hotel.
Days 1–3: Tarangire — 2 nights. Road transfer of about 2–2.5 hours. Baobabs, elephant river, bush walk option.
Day 3: Fly Kuro (Tarangire) → Serengeti — light-aircraft flight to Seronera or Kogatende depending on season.
Days 3–6: Serengeti — 3 nights. North in Jul–Oct (river crossings); south/central Jan–Mar (calving/big cats year-round).
Day 6: Fly Serengeti → Manyara airstrip → transfer to Ngorongoro Crater rim lodge.
Days 6–8: Ngorongoro — 2 nights. Dawn crater descent, with the second day for the highlands or a Maasai village visit.
Day 8: Road transfer Ngorongoro → Kilimanjaro Airport. Depart or connect to Zanzibar.
Road-based version of the Tanzania Northern Circuit safari guide route
The same circuit can be driven from start to finish in a 4×4 safari vehicle. It costs less than flying and you see Maasai villages, the Rift Valley escarpment and the Ngorongoro highlands from the road. The trade-off is time: the drive from the Ngorongoro area to central Serengeti takes much of a day on rough gravel, with game viewing along the way. Most road safaris run Arusha → Tarangire → Serengeti → Ngorongoro → Arusha, or the reverse.

Lake Manyara National Park sits at the foot of the Rift Valley escarpment on the way to Ngorongoro. It is small but varied, with groundwater forest, baboon troops, elephants and seasonal flamingos, and suits a half-day game drive.
Other popular additions include a Maasai village visit in the Ngorongoro highlands, a hot-air balloon flight over the central or northern Serengeti at dawn, a coffee farm tour near Karatu, and a walking safari in Tarangire or the conservation area. Each adds variety without adding much travel time.

Practical Tips for the Northern Circuit
- Visa: most visitors need a Tanzania visa. Apply in advance through the official Tanzania e-visa portal.
- Park rules and fees: check the Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) site for current regulations.
- Health: the region is in a malaria zone. See your doctor about tablets and vaccines, and ask whether you need a yellow fever certificate for your route.
- Clothing: the Ngorongoro rim sits at over 2,000 metres and is cold at night and early morning, so pack a warm fleece and jacket.
- Plastic bags: Tanzania bans single-use plastic carrier bags, and they may be confiscated on arrival.
- Luggage: light-aircraft flights usually allow about 15 kg per person in a soft bag.
- Tipping: carry clean US dollar notes for guides and camp staff.

How many days do I need for the Tanzania Northern Circuit?
Seven nights is a workable minimum: 2 nights Tarangire, 3 nights Serengeti, 2 nights Ngorongoro. Ten nights is ideal — it allows an extra night in the Serengeti and removes any rushed feeling. A 10-night Tanzania circuit plus 4-night Zanzibar beach extension makes a 14-night East Africa trip that covers everything Tanzania has to offer. Which is better — Serengeti or Masai Mara?
Different, not comparable. The Serengeti is vastly larger (14,763 km² vs the Mara’s 1,510 km²), has a bigger lion population, and offers the calving season in January–March that Kenya cannot match. The Masai Mara conservancies offer night drives, walking safaris, and a more intimate vehicle-to-wildlife experience that the Serengeti’s national park rules don’t permit. Yes. It is one of the best first safaris in Africa because it combines three very different parks, reliable big game and easy logistics from Arusha. First-timers usually see lions, elephants, buffalo and plenty of plains game, with a strong chance of rhino in the Ngorongoro Crater and cheetah or leopard in the Serengeti.
Should I drive or fly on the Northern Circuit?
Drive if you want to keep costs down and enjoy the scenery; fly if time is short or you are visiting the far north of the Serengeti. Many guests mix the two, driving between Arusha, Tarangire and Ngorongoro, then flying to and from the Serengeti to save a long day on gravel roads.
Is the Tanzania Northern Circuit suitable for children?
Yes, with sensible planning. The Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire are excellent for families because sightings come quickly.
