Aberdare National Park Lodges: 5 Best Tree Hotels and Stays (2026)

Rocky highland scenery in Aberdare National Park, one of the most scenic national parks in Kenya

A soft buzz wakes you just after midnight. You pull on a fleece, pad down a wooden corridor and step onto a dark viewing deck. Below, under a pale floodlight, a family of elephants is drinking at the waterhole, and somewhere in the forest beyond, a buffalo snorts. Nobody speaks. Nobody needs to.

Aberdare National Park lodges are Kenya’s famous tree hotels, where you watch wildlife at a floodlit waterhole through the night. The Ark is the classic stay inside the park, Treetops reopened in 2024, and Aberdare Country Club, KWS’s Fishing Lodge and Solio Lodge complete the choice.

Sense of Adventure is a Nairobi-based safari company at Mountain Mall on Thika Road, licensed by Kenya’s Tourism Regulatory Authority (TRA1/47/C01/77087). We plan luxury Kenya safaris that include a night in the Aberdares, often on the way to Laikipia or Samburu. This guide compares Aberdare National Park lodges, explains how a tree hotel night works, and covers fees, seasons, children and packing.

What Makes Aberdare National Park Lodges Special?

Aberdare National Park lodges let the wildlife come to you, at night, while you watch from a warm room or deck above a waterhole.

The park covers about 766 square kilometres of mountain forest, bamboo and moorland in central Kenya, and it was gazetted in 1950. According to the Kenya Wildlife Service park page, it lies about 150 km from Nairobi, with elephant and buffalo among its best-known residents and Mount Satima as its highest peak. The range rises above 4,000 metres.

Aberdare National Park lodges sit in shy-animal country. The forest hides black rhino, leopard, giant forest hog and the rare mountain bongo. Waterfalls such as Karuru tumble off the moorland, and cold, misty air keeps everything green.

The honest trade-off: game drives here are slower than in the Mara, the roads can be muddy, and lions are not on KWS’s list of park species. Our Aberdare Big Five guide explains why. Most travellers spend one magical night at Aberdare National Park lodges, then move on.

The 5 Best Aberdare National Park Lodges and Nearby Stays

Aberdare National Park lodges include two historic tree hotels, a heritage country house, a KWS fishing lodge and a nearby rhino lodge, and we checked each against official sources in November 2026.

1. The Ark: The Classic Aberdare Tree Hotel

Why we love it: Of all Aberdare National Park lodges, The Ark is the one people picture. It stands inside the park in the Salient, built in the shape of Noah’s Ark, with four viewing decks over a floodlit waterhole and salt lick. There is also a ground-level photographic bunker for eye-level shots.

Best for: first-timers, couples, photographers and anyone who loves a story. The moment you’ll remember: the night guard’s buzzer calling you out of bed when elephants or a rhino arrive at the water.

Practical facts: The Ark is run by Marasa Africa. You check in at its sister property, Aberdare Country Club, and transfer into the park. Activities include safari drives, guided bush walks, birding, moorland visits and trout fishing. Cabins range from singles and twins to family rooms; rooms are compact, as on any tree hotel. The child policy and nightly rates are not published in full online, so ask us before booking with young children. Price band $$$; message us for current rates. See The Ark official site.

2. Treetops: Where a Princess Became Queen

Why we love it: Among Aberdare National Park lodges, Treetops is where the tree hotel idea began. Eric Sherbrooke Walker built the first lodge in 1932, and Princess Elizabeth was staying there in February 1952 when she became Queen. The original was burned in 1954 and a larger lodge was built nearby.

Best for: history lovers, royal-watchers and older travellers revisiting a memory. The moment you’ll remember: standing on the deck where so much history happened, watching the same waterhole come alive.

Practical facts: Treetops closed during the pandemic and, according to The Standard, reopened in August 2024 under new management with 36 rooms. We could not confirm its current trading details on an official site, so we check with the lodge before every booking. Price band $$; message us for current status and rates.

3. Aberdare Country Club: The Heritage Base on Mweiga Hill

Why we love it: Among Aberdare National Park lodges and their bases, the Country Club is the most relaxing. It is a former homestead called The Steep on Mweiga Hill, just outside the park, about two and a half hours’ drive from Nairobi. It has 37 rooms plus 10 cottages, set in its own 1,300-acre sanctuary with zebra, giraffe and impala.

Best for: families, golfers, seniors and celebration groups. The moment you’ll remember: a walk or ride among giraffe on the sanctuary, with views across to Solio and Mount Kenya.

Practical facts: golf, horse riding, nature walks, safari drives and a spa. It is the check-in point for The Ark, so many guests stay one night here and one at The Ark. Mweiga airstrip is close by for charters. Price band $$$; message us for current rates. See Aberdare Country Club official site.

4. KWS Fishing Lodge: Aberdare Accommodation on the Moorland

Why we love it: for a wild, private night among Aberdare National Park lodges, KWS runs the Fishing Lodge in the southern moorlands. It is two houses, Satima and Karuru, about 100 metres apart. Each has three bedrooms, log fires and solar lighting.

Best for: anglers, hikers, self-drive families and groups of friends. The moment you’ll remember: a log fire after a day of trout streams and waterfalls, with the moorland silent outside.

Practical facts: self-catering, so bring food or let us arrange a cook. The KWS booking page lists about KSh 40,920 per house per night for non-residents. It is about 180 km from Nairobi, and a 4×4 is essential. This is simple, not luxury.

5. Solio Lodge: Rhinos Between the Aberdares and Mount Kenya

Solio Lodge accommodation overlooking the rhino plains of Solio Conservancy near the Aberdares
Solio Lodge looks out over open plains where rhino are seen on almost every drive, with the Aberdares on the horizon.

Why we love it: Solio is not an Aberdare National Park lodge in the strict sense, but it sits on the plains between the Aberdares and Mount Kenya and is our favourite luxury pairing. It is the only lodge in Solio Conservancy, which The Safari Collection describes as the world’s first private rhino sanctuary, founded in 1970.

Best for: honeymooners, photographers and anyone desperate to see rhino. The moment you’ll remember: a game drive with dozens of rhino in view at once; the operator says you can see up to 40 at a time.

Practical facts: run by The Safari Collection, with horse riding, walks, cycling, a spa and day trips into the Aberdares. Charter flights from Wilson take about an hour to the Solio airstrip. Price band $$$$$; message us for current rates. See The Safari Collection official site.

What About the Outspan Hotel?

The Outspan in Nyeri was the traditional base for Treetops. It closed during the pandemic, and we have found no confirmed reopening, so we do not currently include it in Aberdare National Park lodges itineraries.

🦏 The Ark, Treetops or Solio?

The Ark is the classic tree hotel, Treetops is pure history, and Solio adds rhinos in luxury. Tell us who is travelling and we will choose the right Aberdare stay for you.

How an Aberdare Tree Hotel Night Works

An Aberdare tree hotel night at one of the Aberdare National Park lodges is short and simple: you arrive in the afternoon, watch the waterhole until late, and leave after breakfast.

  • Check-in: for The Ark, you report to Aberdare Country Club around lunchtime and leave larger bags there.
  • Transfer: a lodge vehicle takes you up into the forest, often with sightings on the way.
  • Evening: tea, then hours on the decks as elephant, buffalo and antelope come to drink and lick salt.
  • Night: a buzzer in your room alerts you to special visitors, so you can sleep without missing them.
  • Morning: breakfast, a last look at the waterhole, then back down to continue your safari.

Raised walkways keep you safely above the forest floor as you move between your room and the decks after dark.

Expert tip from our Nairobi team: pack a small overnight bag for Aberdare National Park lodges such as The Ark. Rooms are compact, and travelling light makes the transfer easy. Leave your main luggage at the base hotel or in our vehicle.

The People Behind the Stay

Aberdare National Park lodges rely on KWS rangers, night watchmen, guides and local staff, and your park fees help protect one of Kenya’s most important water towers.

The Aberdares feed rivers that supply water to millions of Kenyans, so protecting the forest matters far beyond tourism. KWS rangers patrol the park, and an electric fence around the range helps reduce clashes between wildlife and farms. The fee you pay at the gate goes to the Kenya Wildlife Service and its work.

At Aberdare National Park lodges such as The Ark and Treetops, the night watchmen are the unsung heroes. They scan the waterhole for hours, know which animals matter to guests, and press the buzzer at the right moment. Guides from Nyeri and Mweiga know the forest’s birds and tracks, and they turn a short stay into a real introduction to the mountain.

Nearby, Solio has protected rhino since 1970, and its breeding success has helped restock other reserves across Kenya. For more on rhino, see our black rhino vs white rhino guide.

Choosing Aberdare Accommodation by Traveller Type

The right Aberdare accommodation depends on whether you want the classic night at the waterhole, history, comfort or rhinos.

  • Honeymooners: The Ark for one night, then Solio Lodge. See our best honeymoon lodges in Kenya.
  • Families: Aberdare Country Club for space and activities; check The Ark’s child policy with us first.
  • Photographers: The Ark’s ground-level bunker, then Solio for rhino in open country.
  • First-timers: one night at The Ark, the best-known of the Aberdare National Park lodges, is a perfect taste of the Aberdares.
  • Celebration groups: the Country Club’s cottages, with golf and riding.
  • Seniors: the Country Club and The Ark, with short walks and no long drives inside the park.

How We’d Plan It: 4 Nights With the Aberdares, Solio and Mount Kenya

Aberdare National Park lodges fit neatly between Nairobi and the north, so we build them into a loop with Solio and Mount Kenya.

  1. Day 1: drive from Nairobi to Mweiga, about two and a half hours; lunch at Aberdare Country Club, then up to The Ark.
  2. Day 2: breakfast at The Ark, a morning drive to the waterfalls, then on to Solio Lodge.
  3. Day 3: a full day of rhino drives, a ride or a walk at Solio.
  4. Day 4: transfer to a Mount Kenya or Laikipia lodge for a final night.
  5. Day 5: fly from Nanyuki to Nairobi, or continue to Samburu.

For the next stops, see our Mount Kenya luxury lodges, Ol Pejeta Conservancy camps and Laikipia luxury lodges guides. Prefer to hike? Our Aberdare Ranges Trek (3 days) explores the moorland and waterfalls on foot.

We can build any of these Aberdare National Park lodges into a tailor-made private Kenya safari, subject to availability, or into a longer route such as our 10 Days Luxury Kenya Safari with Solio. Starting in the capital? Read our Kenya safari from Nairobi guide.

Best Time to Visit Aberdare National Park Lodges

The best time to visit Aberdare National Park lodges is December to February and June to September, when the forest roads are drier.

  • December–February: the driest spell, good for waterhole viewing and clear moorland views.
  • March–May: the long rains; heavy downpours, slippery roads and the quietest lodges.
  • June–September: cool and mostly dry, with busy weekends in July and August.
  • October–November: the short rains; the forest is lush and visitors are few.

The Aberdares are among the wettest places in Kenya, so Aberdare National Park lodges can see rain in any month; nights are cold all year. Our Kenya weather by month guide has more detail.

Aberdare National Park Lodges FAQs

What is the best lodge in Aberdare National Park?

The Ark is the best of the Aberdare National Park lodges for a classic night. It sits inside the park, has four viewing decks over a floodlit waterhole and salt lick, and a buzzer alerts you when special animals arrive. For luxury nearby, pair it with Solio Lodge and its rhinos.

Is Treetops Hotel open again?

Treetops closed during the pandemic and, according to Kenyan press reports, reopened in August 2024 under new management with 36 rooms. We could not confirm its current details on an official website, so we check directly with the lodge before every booking. Ask us for the latest status.

What is the difference between The Ark and Treetops?

Both are tree hotels that overlook floodlit waterholes. The Ark, shaped like Noah’s Ark, sits deeper inside the park with four viewing decks and a photo bunker. Treetops is the original, famous as the place where Princess Elizabeth became Queen in 1952, and it reopened in 2024.

Where do you check in for The Ark?

Guests check in at Aberdare Country Club on Mweiga Hill, The Ark’s sister property, and transfer up into the park by lodge vehicle. Larger luggage can stay at the Country Club, so you only take a small overnight bag to the tree hotel. Allow about two and a half hours from Nairobi.

Can children stay at The Ark in the Aberdares?

The Ark offers family cabins, but its full child policy is not published online. Ask us before booking with young children, and we will confirm the current rules. Aberdare Country Club is a relaxed alternative for families, with its own wildlife sanctuary, riding and space to play.

What animals can you see at the Aberdare waterholes at night?

Elephant and buffalo are the most regular visitors, along with antelope such as bushbuck and waterbuck. With luck you may see black rhino, leopard, giant forest hog or, very rarely, the shy bongo. The lodge buzzer system means you can rest without missing special sightings.

How much is the Aberdare National Park entry fee?

Under the KWS tariff in force since 1 October 2025, non-resident adults pay USD 70 and children USD 40 per 24 hours. Fees usually apply when you stay at The Ark or the KWS Fishing Lodge. Check the official KWS website, or ask us to include fees in your quote.
