A Kenya and Zanzibar itinerary usually works best as three or four nights on safari followed by four or five nights on the beach, linked by a flight of about 1.5 hours from Nairobi. Seven days is the minimum, ten is ideal, and July to October or late December to February give the best weather in both places.
Sense of Adventure is a licensed safari operator based at Mountain Mall on Thika Road, Nairobi (TRA licence TRA1/47/C01/77087), and Kenya and Zanzibar is one of the trips we plan most often. This guide explains how to combine safari and island: how many days to allow, sample 7, 10 and 14-day routes, flights, visas and insurance, the best months, where to stay on Zanzibar, costs and the mistakes to avoid.

Why Combine Kenya and Zanzibar?
Kenya and Zanzibar pair well because they give you the best of both: world-class wildlife and a relaxed island beach, only a short flight apart.
Kenya’s Masai Mara is one of the finest places in Africa for big cats and, from about July to October, the Great Migration. Zanzibar adds white sand, warm water, Swahili culture in Stone Town and plenty of time to rest. Many travellers find that a few beach days after early-morning game drives make the whole holiday feel less rushed.
The two places sit in different countries, Kenya and Tanzania, so there is a little more paperwork than a single-country trip. Planned properly, it is simple.
How Many Days Do You Need for Kenya and Zanzibar?
Most travellers need 8 to 12 days for Kenya and Zanzibar, with a minimum of 7 days if you fly into the Mara.
| Trip length | Safari nights | Zanzibar nights | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 days | 3 (Masai Mara) | 3 | Short holidays, honeymoons with limited leave |
| 10 days | 4 (Mara, or Mara and Amboseli) | 5 | Most first-time visitors |
| 12 days | 5–6 (two or three parks) | 5 | Wildlife lovers who still want a real rest |
| 14 days | 6–7 (Mara, Amboseli, Lake Naivasha or Samburu) | 6 | Families and slow travellers |
Expert tip from our Nairobi team: do not cut the safari to two nights to gain more beach time. Three nights in the Mara gives you at least two full days of game drives, which is when most of the best sightings happen.
Sample 7-Day Kenya and Zanzibar Itinerary
A 7-day Kenya and Zanzibar trip fits three Mara nights and three beach nights, and works best with at least one flight.
- Day 1: arrive in Nairobi; fly or drive to the Masai Mara; afternoon game drive.
- Day 2: full day of game drives in the Mara.
- Day 3: morning game drive; optional balloon flight or Maasai village visit.
- Day 4: fly back to Nairobi and on to Zanzibar; transfer to your beach hotel.
- Day 5: beach day, snorkelling or a dhow trip.
- Day 6: Stone Town tour and spice farm, or more time on the beach.
- Day 7: fly from Zanzibar home, or back via Nairobi.

Sample 10-Day Kenya and Zanzibar Itinerary
Ten days is the sweet spot for Kenya and Zanzibar, giving a proper safari and a real rest without rushing.
- Day 1: arrive in Nairobi; evening at a hotel or lodge near the airport.
- Days 2–4: Masai Mara, with morning and afternoon game drives each day.
- Day 5: fly from the Mara to Nairobi, then on to Zanzibar.
- Days 6–9: beach, snorkelling at Mnemba, Stone Town and a spice tour.
- Day 10: fly home from Zanzibar or via Nairobi.
A popular variation swaps one Mara night for two nights in Amboseli for elephants and views of Kilimanjaro. Our Kenya and Zanzibar Honeymoon is a 10-day version of this route.
Kenya and Zanzibar: road or air for the safari part?
Driving to the Mara saves money but takes most of a day each way. On a 7 or 10-day Kenya and Zanzibar trip, flying at least one way usually gives you more time with the animals. Our guide to Nairobi to Masai Mara compares the road and the flight in detail.
Sample 14-Day Kenya and Zanzibar Itinerary
Two weeks lets you see more of Kenya before the beach, which suits families and travellers who want variety.
- Days 1–2: Nairobi, including the elephant orphanage and Giraffe Centre.
- Days 3–4: Amboseli for elephants and Kilimanjaro views.
- Day 5: Lake Naivasha for a boat ride with hippos.
- Days 6–8: Masai Mara.
- Day 9: fly to Zanzibar.
- Days 10–13: beach, Stone Town and island trips.
- Day 14: fly home.

Flights Between Kenya and Zanzibar
Direct scheduled flights link Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport with Zanzibar in about 1.5 hours.
Several regional airlines fly the route, and timings change by season, so we match the flight to your safari. Most travellers fly back from the Mara to Wilson Airport in Nairobi, then transfer across the city to JKIA for the Zanzibar flight. That transfer can take 30–60 minutes or longer in traffic, so allow a comfortable gap. Booking the safari flight and the Zanzibar flight together, with a sensible connection, avoids most problems.
Light aircraft to the Mara usually allow about 15 kg per person in soft bags, while the Zanzibar flight normally has a larger allowance. Pack for the smaller limit and store any extra bag in Nairobi. Our Nairobi to Zanzibar layover guide explains connections, tickets and bags.
Can you fly home from Zanzibar?
Yes. Zanzibar has international flights to the Gulf, Europe and other African hubs, so many travellers fly home directly from the island instead of returning to Nairobi. This often saves a day. Check your international ticket options early.
Visas, Insurance and Health for Kenya and Zanzibar
Because Kenya and Zanzibar are in different countries, you need entry permission and insurance for both, plus the right health documents.
| Requirement | Kenya | Zanzibar (Tanzania) |
|---|---|---|
| Entry permission | Kenya eTA via the official eTA portal | Tanzania visa (eVisa or on arrival); about USD 50 for most nationalities, USD 100 multiple-entry for US citizens |
| Mandatory insurance | Kenya’s travel health insurance step for many visitors | Tanzania’s government travel insurance, about USD 44 per adult, covering mainland and Zanzibar |
| Yellow fever | Needed if arriving from a risk country | Usually needed when arriving from Kenya |
| Malaria | Present in most safari areas | Present; take the same precautions |
Tanzania’s mandatory insurance started for Zanzibar in 2024 and was extended to mainland Tanzania from 1 October 2026. One policy is meant to cover both, bought from the insurer linked to your first point of entry. Our guides to Kenya mandatory travel insurance and the yellow fever certificate in East Africa explain the details.

Best Time for a Kenya and Zanzibar Trip
The best months for Kenya and Zanzibar together are July to October and late December to February, when both are mostly dry.
| Months | Masai Mara | Zanzibar | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| January–February | Dry, warm, good game viewing | Hot, sunny, calm sea | Excellent |
| March | Getting wetter | Hot and humid | Good value |
| April–May | Long rains; some camps close | Long rains; some hotels close | Least suitable |
| June | Drying out; migration may arrive late in the month | Cooler, breezy, dry | Good |
| July–October | Great Migration season; peak prices | Dry and pleasant | Excellent, book early |
| November–mid-December | Short rains, green and quieter | Short showers | Good value |
Expert tip from our Nairobi team: for July to October dates, book Mara camps first, because they fill months ahead, then fit the Zanzibar hotel around them. Beach rooms are usually easier to find than safari tents in peak migration season.
Where to Stay on Zanzibar After Safari
Your Zanzibar beach matters more than most travellers expect, because tides, wind and atmosphere vary a lot around the island.
- North (Nungwi and Kendwa): less tidal change, good swimming most of the day and lively sunsets.
- North-east (Matemwe): quiet, close to Mnemba for snorkelling; large tides.
- East (Paje, Jambiani, Michamvi): long beaches and kitesurfing; the sea goes out a long way at low tide.
- South-west (Fumba and Menai Bay): calm and relaxed, with dolphin trips.
- Stone Town: one or two nights for history, food and markets, rather than a beach stay.
Our Zanzibar travel guide covers each area and the best things to do, and our Zanzibar Beach and Stone Town trip can be added to any safari.

How Much Does a Kenya and Zanzibar Trip Cost?
The cost of Kenya and Zanzibar depends mostly on your safari style, the season and whether you fly or drive to the Mara.
The safari part is normally the larger share, because it includes park or conservancy fees, a vehicle and guide, full-board camps and any light-aircraft flights. Zanzibar beach hotels range from simple guesthouses to luxury resorts, and many offer half board or all inclusive. On top, budget for the Nairobi–Zanzibar flight, the Tanzania visa and insurance, tips and drinks.
Our guides to Kenya vs Tanzania safari cost and Kenya safari spending money help you plan the extras. Every Kenya and Zanzibar quote we send is itemised, so you can see where the money goes.
Kenya and Zanzibar or the Kenyan Coast?
Zanzibar is not your only beach option: Kenya’s own coast, such as Diani, Watamu or Lamu, is closer and needs no second visa.
| Factor | Zanzibar | Kenyan coast (e.g. Diani) |
|---|---|---|
| Flight from Nairobi | About 1.5 hours | About 1 hour |
| Extra visa and insurance | Yes (Tanzania) | No |
| Culture | Stone Town, Swahili history, spice farms | Swahili towns, Lamu old town, Gede ruins |
| Beaches | Famous white sand; strong tides on the east coast | Long white beaches, reef-protected lagoons |
| Best for | Travellers who want an island feel | Simpler logistics and families |
If you prefer fewer borders, our Kenya Safari and Beach Holiday pairs the Mara and Amboseli with Diani Beach.

Common Kenya and Zanzibar Planning Mistakes
Most problems on Kenya and Zanzibar trips come from tight connections, missing documents or the wrong beach.
- Too little safari: two nights in the Mara is rarely enough.
- Tight connections: leave time for the Wilson to JKIA transfer.
- No yellow fever certificate: Zanzibar usually checks travellers arriving from Kenya.
- Forgetting the Tanzania visa and insurance: sort them before you fly.
- Ignoring tides: choose a north-coast beach if swimming at all times matters to you.
- Overpacking: light aircraft limits apply on the safari part.
- Travelling in April or May without checking: some camps and hotels close in the long rains.

Kenya and Zanzibar FAQs
How many days do you need for Kenya and Zanzibar?
Ten days is ideal for most travellers, with four nights on safari and five on the beach. Seven days is the realistic minimum, ideally with a flight into the Masai Mara. Two weeks lets you add Amboseli or Lake Naivasha and still enjoy a long, relaxing beach stay.
How long is the flight from Nairobi to Zanzibar?
Direct flights from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi take about 1.5 hours. If you are coming from the Masai Mara, you usually fly to Wilson Airport first, then transfer across Nairobi to JKIA, so allow a comfortable gap between the two flights.
Should I do safari or beach first?
Safari first is the usual choice. Game drives start early and can be tiring, so ending on the beach lets you rest before the long flight home. It also means sand and salt water do not end up in your camera gear before the safari.
Do I need a visa for Zanzibar if I have a Kenya eTA?
Yes. Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, so you need a Tanzania visa, either an eVisa before travel or a visa on arrival. Most nationalities pay about USD 50, while US citizens pay USD 100 for a multiple-entry visa. You also need Tanzania’s mandatory travel insurance.
Do I need a yellow fever certificate to go from Kenya to Zanzibar?
Usually, yes. Tanzania and Zanzibar list Kenya as a yellow fever risk country, so travellers arriving from Kenya are expected to show a valid certificate. Get vaccinated at least 10 days before you arrive in Zanzibar and carry the original card with your passport.
What is the best month for Kenya and Zanzibar?
July to October is best for the Great Migration in the Masai Mara and dry weather on Zanzibar, though prices are highest. Late December to February is also excellent, with hot, sunny beaches and good game viewing. April and May are the least suitable because of the long rains.
Is Zanzibar better than the Kenyan coast after safari?
Neither is better for everyone. Zanzibar offers an island feel and Stone Town’s history but needs a Tanzania visa and insurance. Kenya’s coast, such as Diani, is closer, needs no extra paperwork and suits families who want simpler logistics. Both have beautiful beaches.
