Kenya Highlights Safari – Samburu, Ol Pejeta, Lake Nakuru & Masai Mara (9 Days)

9 Days

The Kenya highlights safari is a nine-day journey that crosses the country from north to south to show how varied its wildlife really is. You start in hot, dry Samburu, cross the equator to Ol Pejeta Conservancy for rhinos and chimpanzees, visit Lake Nakuru and finish with three nights in the Masai Mara. You travel in a private pop-up roof 4×4 with a window seat for every guest, and the price starts from USD 2,350 per adult sharing.

Why Choose the Kenya Highlights Safari?

Many first-time visitors ask how to see the best of Kenya without spending three weeks on the road. This route is our answer. It covers four of the country’s finest wildlife areas in nine days, and it was built to follow a sensible line from the north down to the Mara, so you are never doubling back over the same ground.

The Kenya highlights safari replaces our older 8-day Best of Kenya itinerary and adds an extra night so the pace feels more comfortable. It suits groups, couples and families with older children, and it is popular with travellers from the UK, Germany, Switzerland, France and the Netherlands.

  • Variety: the arid north, the Laikipia plateau, the Rift Valley lakes and the open plains of the Masai Mara.
  • Rare northern species: Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx and Somali ostrich in Samburu.
  • Rhinos and chimpanzees: Ol Pejeta Conservancy has the last northern white rhinos, black rhinos and a chimpanzee sanctuary.
  • Birdlife: Lake Nakuru’s shore is a magnet for birds, and rhinos and giraffes graze nearby.
  • Big cats: three nights in the Masai Mara give you real time to find lions, cheetahs and leopards.
  • Private vehicle: a pop-up roof Land Cruiser, a professional driver-guide and a window seat for every guest.

Day-by-Day Kenya Highlights Safari Itinerary

Days 1 to 4: Samburu and Ol Pejeta

Day 1, Nairobi to Samburu. Drive north past Mount Kenya to Samburu National Reserve, arriving in time for lunch. In the afternoon you go on your first game drive along the Ewaso Ng’iro River, where elephants come to drink.

Day 2, a full day in Samburu. Spend the whole day looking for the Samburu Special Five, elephants and leopards. An optional Samburu village visit gives a glimpse of local life. Our Samburu safari guide explains what to expect in the reserve.

Day 3, Samburu to Ol Pejeta. Drive south and cross the equator at Nanyuki on the way to Ol Pejeta Conservancy. An afternoon game drive offers views of Mount Kenya across the plains.

Day 4, Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Visit the Sweetwaters chimpanzee sanctuary and the last northern white rhinos with their rangers. Game drives also look for black rhinos and lions.

Days 5 to 9: Lake Nakuru and the Masai Mara

Day 5, Ol Pejeta to Lake Nakuru. Drive to Lake Nakuru for an afternoon game drive among rhinos, giraffes and lakeshore birds. Read more on our Lake Nakuru safari page.

Day 6, Lake Nakuru to the Masai Mara. Drive to the Masai Mara, arriving for lunch, followed by an afternoon game drive on the plains.

Day 7, a full day in the Masai Mara. A full-day game drive with a picnic lunch lets you follow sightings across the reserve without returning to camp. Our Masai Mara safari page covers the reserve in more depth.

Day 8, the Masai Mara. Morning and afternoon drives, with an optional balloon flight or Maasai village visit.

Day 9, Masai Mara to Nairobi. After an early game drive you return to Nairobi by road or by flight, in time for your onward journey.

Wildlife on the Kenya Highlights Safari

Each stop has a different cast of animals, and that is the main reason this route is worth taking. Here is what to look for in each place.

Samburu: the northern specials

Samburu is hot and dry, so life gathers along the river. Look for the Samburu Special Five, which are the reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich and gerenuk. Elephants bathe in the river and leopards are often seen in the acacia trees. The reserve is quieter than the Mara, so sightings are often yours alone.

Ol Pejeta: rhinos and chimpanzees

Ol Pejeta is a conservancy with a strong conservation focus. It is home to the last northern white rhinos, a large black rhino population and the Sweetwaters chimpanzee sanctuary. You also have a good chance of lions and buffalo on the open grassland.

Lake Nakuru: rhinos and birds

Lake Nakuru is small enough to explore in an afternoon. The lakeshore draws a wide variety of birds, and rhinos and giraffes graze the grassland and woodland around the water.

The Masai Mara: big cats and the migration

The Mara is the finale of this Kenya highlights safari for good reason. Lions are common, cheetahs hunt on the open plains and leopards rest in riverside trees. From July to October, wildebeest and zebra cross into the Mara during the Great Migration.

Who the Kenya Highlights Safari Suits

This route is a strong fit for a range of travellers, and it helps to know where it works best.

  • Groups of friends, clubs and families: the private vehicles and group rates make the Kenya highlights safari easy to organise for six to thirty guests.
  • Couples: nine days is long enough to feel like a proper holiday without taking a full month away.
  • First-time visitors: the route covers the classic wildlife areas and lets you decide where you would like to return.
  • Photographers: the variety of landscapes and species gives you far more to shoot than a single park.
  • Travellers with older children: the pace is steady, but the game drives and transfers are best enjoyed by children who can sit through a morning in the vehicle.

If you need a gentler pace, tell us when you book and we can fly some legs, add a night or shorten the longest drives.

Accommodation and Pace

You stay in carefully chosen lodges and tented camps, with full board while you are on safari. Rooms are private and comfortable, and camps are chosen for their location and service rather than their size. Browse our Kenya lodges and camps to see the style of accommodation we use.

Most transfers take three to six hours with stops for lunch and viewpoints. Driving through the country is part of the experience, because you see the landscape change from semi-desert to highland to Rift Valley to savanna. If you would rather save time, some legs can be flown at extra cost. Two-night stays in Samburu and Ol Pejeta mean you unpack only once in each place and spend a full day on game drives.

A typical safari day

A day on this Kenya highlights safari usually follows a simple rhythm.

  • Dawn: an early game drive when predators and herds are most active.
  • Mid-morning: breakfast at camp or a picnic in the bush, depending on the day.
  • Midday: a rest at camp during the heat, with time to read, swim or relax.
  • Afternoon: a second game drive as the light softens and animals move towards water.
  • Evening: dinner at camp and a briefing from your driver-guide about the next day.

Best Time for the Kenya Highlights Safari

The route works all year, and Samburu is good in every month. The Mara is busiest during the migration months, so book early if you want those dates.

  • January to March: hot, dry weather with good game viewing and fewer visitors than the peak months.
  • April to May: the long rains bring green landscapes and lower prices, with some muddy roads.
  • June to October: the dry season and the best overall time, with the Great Migration in the Mara from July to October.
  • November to December: short rains, lush scenery and excellent birding, with busy festive weeks.

How Much Does the Kenya Highlights Safari Cost?

The Kenya highlights safari starts from USD 2,350 per adult sharing. The final cost depends on the season, the level of accommodation and your group size. Groups of 6 to 30 travel in several vehicles with a window seat each, and the per-person price falls as the group grows. For a wider budgeting guide, read how much an African safari costs.

  • Private 4×4 safari Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof and a window seat for every guest

  • Accommodation as listed in the itinerary
  • Meals as listed, with full board while on safari

Photography on the Kenya Highlights Safari

This route gives photographers a wide range of subjects in nine days. You can photograph Grevy’s zebra and gerenuk in Samburu, rhinos at Ol Pejeta and Lake Nakuru, birds along the lake and lions on the Mara plains. A lens of 200 to 400 mm suits most wildlife, while a wide lens helps with landscapes and big skies. Early mornings and late afternoons give the best light, and the pop-up roof gives you a clear view from the vehicle. Ask your driver-guide to position the vehicle with the sun behind you, and bring spare batteries and memory cards.

What to Pack for the Kenya Highlights Safari

  • Lightweight clothing in neutral colours such as khaki, olive or beige, plus a warm layer for cool mornings and evenings.
  • A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen.
  • Binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens.
  • Closed, comfortable shoes and a scarf for dusty roads.
  • Insect repellent and any malaria prevention recommended by your doctor.
  • A soft-sided bag, because space in the vehicle is limited.

Safari Etiquette and Responsible Travel

Wildlife viewing works best when everyone follows a few simple rules, which your driver-guide will explain on the first day.

  • Stay seated in the vehicle and keep your voice low during sightings.
  • Never feed animals or call to them, and keep a respectful distance.
  • Take all litter with you, including small items such as wrappers.
  • Follow Kenya Wildlife Service park rules at every entrance and on every drive.
  • Ask before photographing people, and buy crafts from community-run stalls when you can.

The park and conservancy fees included in your price help pay for rangers, anti-poaching work and local communities. At Ol Pejeta the rhino protection work you see on day four is funded in part by visitors, so your Kenya highlights safari contributes directly to conservation.

Visas, Health and Safety

Most visitors need a Kenya eTA before arrival, so apply online ahead of your trip and check the current requirements for your nationality. Malaria is present in parts of Kenya, so speak to your doctor about prevention, and take out travel insurance that covers medical evacuation. Our driver-guides are experienced and check conditions daily. For official information, see Magical Kenya and the Kenya Wildlife Service for park rules and fees.

Kenya Highlights Safari FAQs

What will I see on a Kenya highlights safari?

You can see the Big Five, the Samburu Special Five, chimpanzees, flamingos and, from July to October, the Great Migration. Few itineraries cover such variety in nine days.

How long are the drives on this safari?

Most transfers take three to six hours with stops for lunch and viewpoints. Driving through the country is part of the experience, but some legs can be flown at extra cost.

Is this safari suitable for groups?

Yes. Groups of 6 to 30 travel in several vehicles with a window seat each, and the per-person price falls as the group grows.

When is the best time for this route?

June to October and January to March are best. Samburu is good all year, and the Mara is busiest during the migration months.

Can we add a beach stay at the end?

Yes. Fly from the Mara or Nairobi to Diani or Zanzibar for three to five nights. Our beach experience page shows what the coast offers, and we can quote the combined trip.

Is the Kenya highlights safari better than a longer route?

It depends on your time. Nine days covers the four most rewarding regions without feeling rushed. If you want to add Amboseli, Tsavo or a beach stay, our 15 day Kenya safari and beach journey adds more parks and ends on Diani Beach, while our 14 day Kenya Grand Slam safari goes on to Tsavo.

What happens on arrival day?

The route begins on the morning of day one with the drive north to Samburu, so we recommend arriving in Nairobi the day before and staying one night at a hotel. We can book that night for you and arrange the airport transfer, and your driver-guide will meet you with a short briefing before you set off.

Can children join the Kenya highlights safari?

Yes, families with older children enjoy it. The transfers are long on some days, so younger children may prefer one of our shorter routes. See our family safari packages for options designed around children.
