JKIA Lounges: 9 Places to Rest Between Flights at Nairobi Airport (2026)

Travellers relaxing in one of the JKIA lounges beside large windows between flights

JKIA lounges give you a quiet seat, food, Wi-Fi and often a shower between flights at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. There are nine in total, all airside after security. Most international lounges open 24 hours, and passes bought online typically cost about USD 26–45 for a few hours, even on an economy ticket.

We are Sense of Adventure, a Nairobi-based safari company at Mountain Mall on Thika Road, and we meet layover travellers at JKIA most weeks. This guide compares every lounge by terminal, opening hours, access rules and facilities, then covers free places to rest, day rooms nearby and how to decide between a lounge and a quick trip out of the airport.

Which JKIA lounges are open 24 hours?

Seven of the nine JKIA lounges are listed as open around the clock: Pride, Aspire, Asante, Plaza Premium, Turkish Airlines, Mara and Mount Kenya. The Simba Lounge and the domestic Msafiri Lounge are listed from 05:00 to midnight. If you land late at night for an early flight, a 24-hour lounge is the safer choice.

Where the JKIA Lounges Are: Terminal 1 vs Terminal 2

Almost every long-haul traveller connects in Terminal 1, so most of the JKIA lounges you will use are there. Terminal 2 is a smaller building used by some international and domestic carriers.

Terminal 1 (1A to 1E)

Terminal 1 is divided into sections labelled 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D and 1E. Kenya Airways and its SkyTeam partners mostly use 1A, which is why the two biggest Kenya Airways lounges sit there. Many other international airlines use the other sections. The international departure areas are linked airside, but the walk can take a while when the terminal is busy.

Our advice is simple: check your boarding pass or the departure screens for your gate section first, then choose one of the JKIA lounges in that section. That keeps the walk to boarding short, which matters at night when you are tired.

Terminal 2

Terminal 2 has two lounges run by the same operator: the Mara Lounge for international departures and the Mount Kenya Lounge for domestic flights. Both are upstairs on Level 1 after security. If your airline departs from Terminal 2, use these rather than walking back to Terminal 1.

Arriving on a transfer

If you are connecting on one ticket, follow the transfer signs after landing. You pass a security check, then enter the departures area where the JKIA lounges are located. You do not need a Kenya eTA to use a lounge, because you never pass immigration. The Kenya Airports Authority publishes official airport information and notices.

Kenya Airways Lounges: Pride, Simba, Asante and Msafiri

Kenya Airways runs four of the nine JKIA lounges, and they are the most convenient if you fly with the national carrier or a SkyTeam partner.

Pride Lounge (Terminal 1A)

The Pride Lounge is upstairs in 1A, near Gate 17, and is listed as open 24 hours. It is the larger of the two 1A lounges and is reported to have a quieter area with day beds for napping, plus showers. It is the one we suggest for overnight connections on Kenya Airways.

Simba Lounge (Terminal 1A)

The Simba Lounge sits nearby on the same upper level, close to Gate 15. It is listed as open from 05:00 to midnight and has a family room, which helps parents with young children. Both lounges offer hot and cold food, drinks and Wi-Fi.

Asante and Msafiri Lounges

The Asante Lounge in 1C, next to Gate 6, serves passengers on SkyTeam and some partner airlines departing from that section. The Msafiri Lounge is for domestic flights in 1D and is the one to use before a Kenya Airways flight to Mombasa, Kisumu or Eldoret.

Third-party sellers report walk-up rates at the Kenya Airways lounges of about USD 40 for three hours or USD 75 for six hours, though rates change and entry is subject to space. Check the official Kenya Airways website for current eligibility.

If you plan to rest for several hours, pick a lounge with showers or a quiet zone rather than the closest one to your gate.

Priority Pass and Independent JKIA Lounges

If you hold Priority Pass, five JKIA lounges are listed as accepting it: Aspire, Plaza Premium, the Turkish Airlines lounge, Mara and Mount Kenya. LoungeKey and DragonPass cover several of the same lounges.

Aspire Executive Lounge (1B)

Aspire sits opposite Gate 11 and is listed as open 24 hours, with showers. It is handy for passengers on European and Star Alliance airlines that depart from 1B.

Plaza Premium Lounge

Plaza Premium is near Gate 4 and is listed as open 24 hours, with showers. It accepts Priority Pass and several airline partners, and some premium credit cards include entry. Walk-up access is sold subject to capacity, so it can turn people away at busy times.

Turkish Airlines Star Alliance Lounge (1E)

The Turkish Airlines lounge in 1E is open 24 hours and is reported to have showers, a children’s play area, a prayer room and luggage lockers. It suits Star Alliance travellers and Priority Pass members flying from that end of the terminal.

Membership rules and guest fees vary by card and plan. Check your entitlement in the Priority Pass app before you rely on it, because some cards limit free visits per year.

How to Get Into JKIA Lounges Without a Business Class Ticket

You can use most JKIA lounges on an economy ticket by buying a pass. There are four main routes in.

  1. Buy a pass online in advance: third-party sellers list passes from about USD 26 to USD 45 for roughly three hours, often with a small refundable deposit. Booking ahead protects you if the lounge is busy.
  2. Pay at the door: most lounges sell walk-up entry, subject to space. Bring a card, as cash rules vary.
  3. Use a membership: Priority Pass, LoungeKey and DragonPass cover several lounges. Many bank and credit cards include one of these.
  4. Use airline status: SkyTeam Elite Plus, Star Alliance Gold and oneworld Sapphire or Emerald can unlock the matching lounges when you fly with a partner airline.

Lounge passes are sold by time. If you have a nine-hour connection, a three-hour pass will not cover the whole wait, and extra hours cost more. Plan which part of the layover you most want to spend in comfort.

Children and guests

Policies on children differ by lounge and by membership plan. Some charge full price for children over a certain age, and some memberships charge for guests. Check before you arrive, especially for a family of four.

Showers, Sleep and Day Beds: Resting Properly Between Flights

If rest is your main goal, choose JKIA lounges with showers and quiet zones rather than the one nearest your gate.

  • Showers: Pride, Simba, Asante, Aspire, Plaza Premium and the Turkish Airlines lounge are listed with showers, subject to availability. Ask at reception when you arrive, as there may be a short wait.
  • Day beds: the Pride Lounge is reported to have a quiet area with day beds. Most other lounges have armchairs and sofas rather than beds.
  • Rest zones outside lounges: traveller reports mention semi-reclining seats near the windows in parts of 1A and 1E.
  • Noise: lounges get busy when several long-haul flights leave together, often late evening and early morning.

Pack a small overnight kit in your carry-on: toothbrush, a change of top, an eye mask and earplugs. Lounges often supply towels, but not always toiletries.

Free Places to Rest at JKIA Without a Lounge

You do not have to pay for one of the JKIA lounges to rest. The airport has gate-area seating, cafés and charging points in the departure areas.

  • Gate seating: fine for waits of two or three hours. It fills up when several flights board at once.
  • Free Wi-Fi: traveller reports describe free airport Wi-Fi with a simple registration.
  • Charging points: available near many gates. Stay with your devices, as they are not secured.
  • Food: cafés and snack bars operate airside, but opening hours vary and fewer are open late at night.
  • Water: carry an empty bottle through security and buy or refill water airside.

Keep your passport, phone and wallet on your body if you nap in public seating. Theft is not common in the airside areas, but tired travellers are easy targets anywhere in the world.

Day Rooms and Hotels Near JKIA for Longer Gaps

We have not found a transit hotel or pay-by-the-hour sleeping pods inside JKIA’s airside area, so a proper bed means leaving the terminal.

Several hotels sit within a short drive of the terminals, and some sell day-use rooms for a few hours. To reach any of them you must pass immigration, which means an approved Kenya eTA from the official eTA portal and, from October 2026, the government travel health insurance for most visitors.

For connections of ten hours or more overnight, a hotel bed usually beats a lounge armchair. Our guide to hotels near JKIA for an overnight layover compares the options, shuttles and timings. Our guide on whether you can leave JKIA on a layover explains the eTA rules in full.

JKIA Lounges or Leave the Airport? How to Decide

Your layover length and the time of day decide whether JKIA lounges or a trip outside is the better use of your time.

Layover lengthTime of dayOur suggestion
Under 4 hoursAnyStay airside. Use one of the JKIA lounges or gate seating.
4–6 hoursNightLounge with a shower, then rest.
6–8 hoursDaylightA short game drive in Nairobi National Park is possible with an eTA.
8–12 hoursDaylightLeave the airport: game drive, baby elephants and giraffes.
10+ hoursOvernightDay room or hotel near JKIA, or a lounge with day beds.

Remember that you must be back at the terminal about three hours before an international departure. Our guide to the layover time you need to leave JKIA breaks down every step, and the 6-hour layover in Nairobi itinerary shows what fits into a shorter window.

What a lounge cannot give you

Nairobi National Park borders the airport, with lions, rhinos, giraffes and buffalo against the city skyline. With eight daylight hours or more, our Nairobi layover tour includes a game drive, the 11am visit to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant nursery and the Giraffe Centre, with airport pick-up and drop-off. It is priced from USD 190 per adult sharing, and the final cost depends on season and group size.

Practical Tips for Using JKIA Lounges

A few small habits make your time in JKIA lounges smoother and keep you on time for boarding.

  1. Check your gate section first: pick a lounge in or near it so the walk to boarding is short.
  2. Set an alarm: most JKIA lounges do not announce every flight, so keep an eye on the screens and your airline app.
  3. Carry your boarding pass: reception will ask for it, along with your membership card or pass confirmation.
  4. Bring a card: paid passes are usually charged in US dollars. Our Kenya currency and money guide explains what works where.
  5. Ask about time limits: passes usually run for a fixed number of hours, and overstaying can mean an extra charge.
  6. Leave in good time: allow at least 20 minutes to walk to your gate and clear any gate checks.

Food and drink

Lounges serve a buffet of hot dishes, salads, snacks, tea, coffee and soft drinks, with Kenyan tea and coffee usually on offer. Alcohol rules vary by lounge and time of day. If you would rather try proper Kenyan food on a longer stop, our guide to what to eat in Nairobi lists the dishes worth leaving the airport for.

Wi-Fi and work

Lounge Wi-Fi is usually faster and steadier than the public network, which helps if you need to work or make video calls. Plug sockets in Kenya are the UK-style Type G, so bring an adapter if your devices use a different plug.

Who Should Use JKIA Lounges?

JKIA lounges are best for travellers with short or night-time connections, families who need space, business travellers who need to work and anyone arriving tired from a long-haul flight.

They make less sense if you have eight or more daylight hours and an eTA, because the wildlife next door is the real reason to stop in Nairobi. For more ideas, read our guide to things to do on a long Nairobi layover and our Nairobi airport JKIA guide.

JKIA Lounges FAQs

How many lounges are there at JKIA?

Third-party lounge guides list nine lounges at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Seven serve international departures in Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and two serve domestic flights. Kenya Airways runs four of them, and the rest are run by independent operators and Turkish Airlines. All are airside after security.

Can I use JKIA lounges on an economy ticket?

Yes. Most JKIA lounges sell passes to economy passengers, either online in advance or at the door subject to space. Third-party sellers list passes from about USD 26 to USD 45 for around three hours. Priority Pass, LoungeKey and some credit cards also give access to several lounges.

Which JKIA lounges accept Priority Pass?

Lounge guides list five JKIA lounges as Priority Pass partners: Aspire in Terminal 1B, Plaza Premium, the Turkish Airlines lounge in 1E, and the Mara and Mount Kenya lounges in Terminal 2. Partners change, so check the Priority Pass app before travelling to confirm your access and any guest fees.

Are there showers at Nairobi airport?

Yes, inside several lounges. The Pride, Simba, Asante, Aspire, Plaza Premium and Turkish Airlines lounges are listed with showers, subject to availability. Public showers outside the lounges are not widely reported, so buy a lounge pass if a shower matters to you after a long-haul flight.

Is there a transit hotel inside JKIA?

We have not found a transit hotel or sleeping pods inside the airside area at JKIA. For a proper bed you need to pass immigration with an approved Kenya eTA and stay at a hotel near the airport. Several hotels within a short drive offer day rooms and airport shuttles.

Do I need a Kenya eTA to use a lounge at JKIA?

No. If you are connecting on one ticket and stay airside, you do not pass immigration, so no eTA is needed to use a lounge. You only need an eTA if you leave the terminal, for example to visit a hotel, collect bags or go on a short safari.

Can I sleep in JKIA lounges overnight?

Many travellers do. Seven lounges are listed as open 24 hours, and the Pride Lounge is reported to have day beds in a quiet area. Passes are sold by time, so an overnight stay may need a longer pass. For more than eight hours, a hotel bed is often better value.
