Christmas Safari Kenya 2026/27: 12 Honest Tips for a Festive Trip You Can Still Book

Orange sunset behind a lone acacia tree on the Masai Mara plains

Christmas safari Kenya trips are a good idea if you book soon and go in with realistic expectations. December is warm and green, the Masai Mara has lions, cheetahs, elephants and giraffes all month, and many animals have young. The trade-offs are festive prices and limited space at popular camps, not the wildlife.

Sense of Adventure is a licensed safari operator based in Nairobi (TRA licence TRA1/47/C01/77087). As we write, in late October 2026, Christmas is about eight weeks away. This guide gives an honest answer on whether a Christmas safari Kenya holiday is worth it, what the weather and wildlife are really like, how to choose between the Mara, Amboseli, Samburu and the coast, what it costs, and what is still realistic to book now.

✅ Christmas Safari Kenya: The Quick Answer

  • Is it a good time? Yes. Days are warm, landscapes are green and young animals are common. The main drawbacks are higher festive prices and fewer available camps.
  • Weather: warm days, cool mornings and occasional short afternoon showers; by late January the grass usually dries and tracks get dustier.
  • Migration: not in Kenya in December. The wildebeest herds are usually in the Serengeti in Tanzania, but the Mara has resident lions, cheetahs, elephants and giraffes.
  • Best places: the Masai Mara for big cats, Amboseli for elephants, Samburu for rare northern species, the coast for a beach finish.
  • Booking: popular camps often sell out months ahead. Last-minute options exist but are limited, so decide this week if you can.
  • Rules: most visitors need an eTA and, since October 2026, Kenya’s mandatory travel health insurance.

Is a Christmas Safari in Kenya a Good Idea?

Yes, a Christmas safari Kenya holiday is a very good idea for most travellers, as long as you accept that it is a busy, higher-priced time rather than a quiet, cheap one.

The upsides are real. You get sunshine while Europe and North America are cold, green scenery after the short rains, and a festive atmosphere at camps without any of the usual stress of cooking or shopping. School holidays line up neatly, so it suits families and multi-generation groups. Predators have plenty of prey, and photographers like the soft light and dramatic skies.

The downsides are equally real. Christmas and New Year are among the most in-demand weeks of the year, so camp choice narrows and prices rise. Roads out of Nairobi can be slower than usual, and popular Mara sightings can attract several vehicles. If you want the quietest Mara and the lowest prices, our guide to the cheapest time for a Kenya safari explains when to go instead.

Our honest view: choose a Christmas safari Kenya trip because you want to be together over the holidays, not because you expect a bargain or the Great Migration.

Kenya Weather and Wildlife in December and January

December and January in Kenya are warm, mostly sunny and green, with the short rains tailing off, so a Christmas safari Kenya trip rarely suffers from long wet spells.

In the Masai Mara, one camp describes December mornings at around 18°C, middays around 30°C and short afternoon showers that usually clear quickly (source: Governors’ Camp, Masai Mara in December). Expect cooler mornings in Nairobi and the highlands, and a hotter coast. By late January the grass usually starts to dry and tracks become dustier, which makes sightings easier but the air less fresh. Our Kenya weather by month guide has the full picture.

Where is the Great Migration in December?

The Great Migration is not in Kenya in December. The wildebeest herds are usually in the southern or central Serengeti in Tanzania at this time, having left the Mara after the July to October crossings. Anyone selling you a December river crossing in Kenya is not being straight with you. If the migration is your priority, see our guide to the Great Migration safari for July to October instead.

What the Mara does have in December is resident wildlife. Lions, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebra, topi and many species of antelope live there all year, and many have young in the green season. Leopards are harder to find, but riverside trees give the best chance. Migrant birds also arrive. Dense grass can sometimes hide animals, so a good driver-guide matters more than usual.

Masai Mara, Amboseli, Samburu or the Coast at Christmas?

For a first Christmas safari Kenya trip, the Masai Mara is the best all-round choice, but each region offers something different at this time of year.

PlaceWhat you get at ChristmasBest forWatch out for
Masai MaraResident lions, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes; green plains; festive camp dinnersFirst-timers, big cats, familiesBusiest and most expensive; vehicle crowding at sightings
AmboseliLarge elephant herds, open views, Kilimanjaro when the clouds clearElephants, photography, shorter tripsMountain views are best early in the day; cloud is common
SamburuDry northern landscape, rare species such as Grevy’s zebra and reticulated giraffeRepeat visitors, varietyHot; far from Nairobi, so flights or a long drive
Kenya coast (Diani)Warm sea, beaches, a lively holiday atmosphereA beach finish after safariHot, humid and very busy at New Year

For most guests we suggest the Mara as the main event, with Lake Naivasha or Amboseli as a gentler first leg, and a coast stay at the end if you have time. Our Kenya safari packages page shows more routes.

How a Christmas Safari Kenya Holiday Works

A typical Christmas safari Kenya day follows the normal safari rhythm, with a few festive touches added by the camps.

  • Early game drive: a start around sunrise, when animals are most active, then breakfast at camp or a bush breakfast.
  • Midday rest: lunch, shade, a pool or a nap while the heat peaks.
  • Afternoon drive: back out in the softer light until dusk, often with a sundowner stop.
  • Festive dinner: many camps serve a special meal on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or New Year’s Eve, and some add decorations, carols or a bush dinner.
  • Optional extras: a sunrise balloon flight, a Maasai village visit or a guided walk, if your camp or area offers them.

Celebrations differ by camp, so treat these as examples rather than promises. Ask us which camp does what, and we will confirm the details in writing before you book.

A full day out often includes a picnic or bush lunch on the plains, which many guests remember longer than any single sighting. A cooked lunch under an acacia tree, with animals in view, is hard to beat as a Christmas Day moment.

Christmas Safari Kenya Costs and Festive Pricing

A Christmas safari Kenya trip costs more than the same trip in the green season of April or May, mostly because camps charge peak or festive rates, and Masai Mara reserve fees are higher from July to December.

Festive supplements, minimum stays and peak-season rules are set camp by camp, and we have not found a single published rule that applies everywhere, so we will not guess. In general, expect many camps to add a supplement for Christmas and New Year’s Eve and some to ask for a minimum number of nights over the festive dates. Your quote should show these clearly.

Park and reserve fees are one confirmed cost. The Masai Mara National Reserve is run by Narok County, and Kenyan media report that non-resident adults pay USD 200 per day from July to December 2026, up from USD 100 from January to June (source: K24 report on the new Mara fees). We could not confirm the schedule for January 2027 onwards, so ask for it in your quote. Private conservancies set their own fees, which camps often include in their rates. In national parks, the Kenya Wildlife Service raised conservation fees on 1 October 2025, with non-resident adults paying USD 90 per day in Amboseli. Fees can change, so always confirm before paying.

Our own trips show real starting prices. These are the “from” prices on each trip page, and your written quote itemises dates, rooms and any festive supplement. See the table in the itinerary section below, and our guide to how much an African safari costs for wider budgeting.

How Far Ahead Should You Book a Christmas Safari Kenya Trip?

The ideal time to book a Christmas safari Kenya holiday is many months ahead, and popular camps often sell out well before October, so with about eight weeks to go your options are narrower but not gone.

Our trip pages suggest booking 9 to 12 months ahead for the best choice, and our guide on how far in advance to book a Kenya safari explains the logic. We will not invent dates when particular camps fill, because that varies by camp and year. What we can say honestly is this:

  • Popular Mara camps: the best-known and smaller camps are the most likely to be full for Christmas week.
  • Last-minute options exist: some camps and lodges often still have rooms, especially larger ones, less famous areas or dates just outside the peak.
  • Flexibility helps: arriving a few days before 24 December or after New Year, or accepting a different camp style, opens more choices.
  • Other regions: Amboseli, Lake Naivasha or the coast can be easier than a famous Mara camp.
  • Flights and cars: international flights and vehicles can also be tight, so secure those quickly once your dates are firm.

What to do now: send us your dates, number of people, ages of children and rough budget. We will check live availability and tell you plainly if your first choice is gone, rather than promising something we cannot deliver.

The Christmas & New Year Safari is built for the holidays. You spend two relaxed days at Lake Naivasha with a boat ride and a walk among giraffes and zebras, then three nights in the Mara with full-day game drives and a festive dinner. Park, reserve and conservancy fees are included, as are a private pop-up roof Land Cruiser and driver-guide.

If you have a short school holiday, the shorter trips keep drive times manageable. If you have two weeks or more, the longer routes let you see several landscapes and finish at the beach.

Christmas Safari Kenya With Kids and Families

A Christmas safari Kenya trip works well for families with school-holiday children, provided you choose a gentle pace and a family-friendly camp.

  • Start easy: a night or two at Lake Naivasha lets children adjust before the long drive to the Mara.
  • Break up the day: two shorter drives with a rest at camp usually suit children better than one long day.
  • Check minimum ages: some camps and activities have age limits, as our guide to safari minimum age for children explains.
  • Family rooms: ask early, because family rooms are limited at festive times.
  • Entertainment: binoculars, a checklist of animals and a snack bag make drives easier.

Our Kenya family safari packages page explains rooms and children’s rates, and the Kenya Family Safari is designed for families. Malaria is present in much of Kenya, so speak to your doctor; see our Kenya safari malaria guide for general information.

Couples and New Year on Safari

For couples, a New Year safari in Kenya offers a quieter, more romantic way to start the year than a crowded city party.

Many camps host a New Year’s Eve dinner, often by candlelight or around a fire, and you wake up the next morning to a sunrise game drive. If you want privacy, ask about smaller camps and private vehicles, and be aware that these are the first to fill. A sunrise balloon flight can be a special New Year treat where available, though it costs extra and depends on the weather.

A longer route lets you combine the Mara with Amboseli or Samburu, so you see several landscapes in one trip. Tell us if you are celebrating an anniversary or honeymoon, and we will build it into the plan.

Adding a Coast Stay After Your Safari

Adding a few beach nights is the most popular way to extend a Christmas safari Kenya holiday, because it gives you rest after early starts.

Diani Beach on the south coast is the usual choice, and our Kenya Safari and Beach Holiday combines the Masai Mara, Amboseli and Diani. The coast is hot and humid in December and January and very busy around New Year, so book beach rooms early too. Zanzibar is another option for a longer trip, with its own entry rules.

Entry Rules, Insurance, Packing and Health

Check entry rules early, because Kenya’s requirements for visitors changed in 2026 and are enforced before you fly.

  • Kenya eTA: most visitors need an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation before boarding. Apply only through the official portal at etakenya.go.ke, and check the current fee there. The fee is from USD 30, depending on the type of application (the portal lists a transit eTA at USD 20), and approval usually takes about three business days, so apply at least two weeks before you fly. Many African nationals are exempt from the eTA.
  • Travel health insurance: from about 6 October 2026, non-Kenyans staying less than 12 months need mandatory travel health insurance from an approved Kenyan insurer, with cumulative cover of at least USD 50,000. Reports put the premium at about USD 44 per adult, with a lower rate for children, plus a small access fee and payment charges (one test checkout came to about USD 52). You can buy it inside your eTA application or separately on the eCitizen insurance portal, and buying the Kenyan policy even if you hold cover from home is the safest option. Read our guide to Kenya’s mandatory travel insurance for the latest details.
  • Layovers: if you connect through Nairobi, our guide to leaving JKIA on a layover covers the same eTA and insurance points.
  • Packing: light neutral clothes, a warm layer for early mornings, a light rain jacket, hat, sunscreen, binoculars, repellent and closed shoes. Use a soft bag if you are flying on light aircraft.
  • Health: see a doctor or travel clinic well before you go about malaria tablets and vaccines, and bring your own prescriptions.

These rules can change, so confirm them on official sites such as Magical Kenya before you travel.

Christmas Safari Kenya FAQs

Is Christmas a good time for a safari in Kenya?

Yes. December is warm and green, the Masai Mara has resident lions, cheetahs, elephants and giraffes, and many animals have young. Prices and demand are higher than in the green season, so book early and expect busier camps.

Is the Great Migration in Kenya at Christmas?

No. In December the wildebeest herds are usually in the Serengeti in Tanzania, not in the Masai Mara. The Mara still offers excellent game viewing from resident wildlife, but river crossings are a July to October event.

What is the weather like in Kenya in December and January?

Warm and mostly sunny, with cooler mornings and short afternoon showers possible as the short rains tail off. The landscape is green in December, and by late January it usually becomes drier and dustier.

How much does a Christmas safari in Kenya cost?

It depends on the camp, length and group size. Our 6-day Christmas and New Year Safari starts from USD 1,890 per adult sharing, and our 5-day family safari from USD 1,290. Festive supplements vary by camp, so ask for an itemised quote.

How far ahead should I book a Christmas safari in Kenya?

As early as possible. Popular camps often sell out months ahead, and we suggest 9 to 12 months for the best choice. If you are booking now, options are more limited, so be flexible on camps and dates and ask us to check availability.

Do Kenyan camps celebrate Christmas?

Many do, often with a festive dinner on Christmas Day or New Year’s Eve, and sometimes decorations or carols. What is offered varies by camp, so ask what is planned and whether it costs extra.

What do I need to enter Kenya for a Christmas safari?

Most visitors need an approved Kenya eTA before boarding and, since October 2026, mandatory travel health insurance from an approved Kenyan insurer. Check the official eTA portal and our insurance guide for current details.

Can I add a beach holiday after a Christmas safari?

Yes. Diani Beach is the usual choice, and we can add 3 to 5 nights at the coast. It is busy over New Year, so book beach rooms early.
