Gentle Fly-in Safari for Seniors – Ol Pejeta & Masai Mara (6 Days)

6 Days

A Kenya safari for over 60s should keep all of the wildlife and remove the hard parts. This six-day fly-in safari replaces long, bumpy drives with short flights, stays two or three nights in each place and uses camps chosen for step-free paths, comfortable beds and good food. You spend three nights at Ol Pejeta Conservancy and two in the Masai Mara, and the price starts from USD 3,600 per adult sharing.

Game drives are made from a comfortable seat, so you can watch giraffes at close range without any walking.

Why Choose a Kenya Safari for Over 60s?

Many of our guests are in their 60s, 70s and 80s, and they tell us the same thing: they want the animals, not the exhaustion. A well-planned Kenya safari for over 60s is built around energy and comfort. Flights replace the longest road transfers, days are paced around your needs, and camps are chosen for easy access rather than for size or fashion.

  • Short flights: you fly between the parks instead of enduring long drives on rough roads.
  • Few camp changes: two or three nights in each place, so you unpack less and rest more.
  • Easy access: camps with short, level paths and ground-floor rooms where you need them.
  • Flexible days: late starts are available, and you can skip a drive and relax in camp.
  • Two great parks: rhinos and chimpanzees at Ol Pejeta, lions and elephants in the Masai Mara.

Kenya Safari for Over 60s: Route at a Glance

The route has only two destinations, which keeps the trip calm. Each leg is a short flight, and your camp transfer is arranged from the airstrip.

  • Day 1: Fly from Wilson Airport to Nanyuki and transfer to Ol Pejeta Conservancy
  • Day 2: Sweetwaters chimpanzee sanctuary and the northern white rhino enclosure
  • Day 3: Ol Pejeta at leisure, with a morning game drive and a relaxed afternoon
  • Day 4: Fly to the Masai Mara, with an afternoon game drive and sundowner
  • Day 5: Masai Mara game drives at your own pace
  • Day 6: Final short game drive and flight back to Nairobi

Day-by-Day Kenya Safari for Over 60s Itinerary

Days 1 to 3: Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Day 1, fly to Ol Pejeta. You fly from Wilson Airport to Nanyuki and transfer to your camp in Ol Pejeta Conservancy. The flight is short, so you arrive fresh and in time for an afternoon game drive with views of Mount Kenya. Dinner and overnight at camp.

Day 2, chimpanzees and rhinos. Visit the Sweetwaters chimpanzee sanctuary and the enclosure of the last two northern white rhinos, with their rangers. These stops involve very little walking and are among the most moving wildlife experiences in Kenya. A gentle game drive follows in the afternoon.

Day 3, Ol Pejeta at leisure. Take a morning game drive looking for black rhinos, lions and elephants, then enjoy a relaxed afternoon at camp. If you feel like it, an optional short guided walk is available. This free afternoon is what makes a Kenya safari for over 60s different from a standard itinerary.

Days 4 to 6: The Masai Mara

Day 4, fly to the Masai Mara. A short flight takes you to the Mara, where you are met at the airstrip and driven to your camp. An afternoon game drive and a sundowner finish the day. Read more on our Masai Mara safari page.

Lion lying in golden grass in the Masai Mara, a highlight of a Kenya safari for over 60s
The Masai Mara is the place to look for lions, and short flights save your energy for the game drives.

Day 5, a full day in the Mara. Join morning and afternoon game drives at your own pace, or choose a quiet day in camp. A sunrise balloon flight is optional for those who want it. Your guide tailors the day to your energy, so there is no pressure to see everything.

Day 6, back to Nairobi. After a final short game drive you fly back to Nairobi for your onward journey.

Wildlife on a Kenya Safari for Over 60s

Ol Pejeta and the Masai Mara offer different animals, so you see a wide range in only six days.

Ol Pejeta: rhinos and chimpanzees

Ol Pejeta is a rhino conservancy. It has a large population of black rhinos and is home to the last two northern white rhinos. Lions, elephants, buffalo, zebras and giraffes are also common, and the Sweetwaters sanctuary shelters rescued chimpanzees. Mount Kenya often provides a dramatic backdrop in the morning.

Masai Mara: big cats and elephants

The Mara has Kenya’s best chance of lions and cheetahs, and elephants are regular visitors. Between July and October the Great Migration brings wildebeest and zebra across the plains.

How We Pace a Kenya Safari for Over 60s

Comfort on safari is mostly about planning. The itinerary is designed so that no day asks too much of you, and you can always do less than the programme suggests. Here is how a typical day works on this Kenya safari for over 60s.

  • Late starts: if you prefer a lie-in, you can start the morning game drive later than the usual dawn departure.
  • Midday rest: after lunch the camp is quiet, and many guests rest, read or watch wildlife from the veranda.
  • Afternoon drive: a second game drive in softer light, with a sundowner on some evenings.
  • Optional extras: the balloon flight and the guided walk are choices, not obligations.
  • Short transfers: flights replace the long road legs, so days in camp are spent resting rather than recovering.

Many guests also ask about getting in and out of safari vehicles. Our 4x4s are high, so we can provide an extra step and an arm to hold, and a driver-guide who is used to helping guests of all ages. Seats are comfortable, the roof lifts for viewing and photography, and you can stay seated for every sighting. If you use a walking stick or have a knee or hip that needs care, tell us when you book so we can plan rooms, paths and seating to suit you.

Travelling as a couple, with friends or as a small group of retirees works equally well. Small groups often enjoy the shared dinners and the chance to compare sightings. If you would prefer more privacy, ask about a private vehicle, and we will price it as part of your quote. Our aim is a Kenya safari for over 60s that feels unhurried from the first flight to the last, with the wildlife as the main event.

Accommodation and Pace

You stay in the camps listed in your itinerary, with full-board meals while on safari. We choose camps with short, level paths, comfortable beds and good food, and we can request ground-floor rooms and camps close to the airstrip. Game drives use the camp’s 4×4 vehicles with experienced guides, and we can arrange a private vehicle on request. See our Kenya lodges and camps for the style we use, or look at our Ol Pejeta and Masai Mara luxury conservancy safari if you want a higher level of comfort.

Best Time for a Kenya Safari for Over 60s

You can travel all year, but the best months are June to October and January to March, when roads are firm and animals gather near water. Flights make the rainy months easier than they would be by road.

  • January to March: warm, dry weather with good game viewing and fewer visitors.
  • April to May: the long rains bring lower prices and green scenery, with some showers.
  • June to October: the dry season, and the Great Migration in the Mara from July to October.
  • November to December: short rains, fresh landscapes and good birding, with busy festive weeks.

How Much Does a Kenya Safari for Over 60s Cost?

This trip starts from USD 3,600 per adult sharing. The price includes the light-aircraft flights, which is why it costs more than a road safari of the same length. The final cost depends on the season, the accommodation and your group size. For a wider guide, read how much an African safari costs.

What Is Included and Not Included

  • Scheduled light-aircraft flights as listed in the itinerary
  • Shared or private game drives in 4×4 vehicles with the camp’s guides
  • Accommodation as listed in the itinerary
  • Meals as listed, full board while on safari
  • All park, reserve and conservancy entry fees
  • Airport and airstrip transfers
  • Bottled drinking water

Not included: international flights, the Kenya eTA (about USD 30 per person), travel insurance, tips and gratuities, drinks and personal expenses, and optional activities not listed as included.

Photography on a Kenya Safari for Over 60s

Because the pace is relaxed, photographers have time to wait for the right moment. A lens of 200 to 400 mm suits most wildlife, and a wide lens is useful for Mount Kenya and the Mara plains. A lightweight camera is easier to handle than a heavy one, and a beanbag rests nicely on the vehicle window. Early mornings and late afternoons give the best light, and your guide will position the vehicle for you.

What to Pack and Luggage Limits

Light aircraft usually allow 15 kg per person in soft bags, so pack carefully. We can store extra luggage for you in Nairobi.

  • Lightweight neutral clothing in khaki, olive or beige, plus a warm layer for early mornings.
  • A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen.
  • Comfortable, closed shoes with good grip.
  • Binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens, spare batteries and memory cards.
  • Any regular medicines, in your hand luggage, with a copy of the prescription.
  • A soft-sided bag, because hard cases do not fit in light aircraft.

Visas, Health and Insurance

Most visitors need a Kenya eTA before arrival, so apply online and check the current rules for your nationality. Speak to your doctor about vaccinations and malaria tablets, and make sure your travel insurance covers medical evacuation. We can advise on emergency evacuation cover. For official information, see Magical Kenya and the Kenya Wildlife Service.
