Laikipia Horseback Safari (5 Days)

5 Days

A Laikipia horseback safari is one of the most thrilling ways to experience Kenyan wildlife. On horseback you can approach giraffes, zebras and antelope far more quietly than in a vehicle, riding across the open plains and acacia country of Laikipia’s private ranches north of Mount Kenya. This five-day trip flies you in, gives you four nights at a riding lodge or camp and starts from USD 3,900 per adult sharing. It is designed for experienced riders who are confident at trot and canter.

On horseback you can approach plains game quietly, far closer than a vehicle usually allows.

Why Choose a Laikipia Horseback Safari?

Animals react differently to a horse than to a vehicle. Plains game often tolerates a rider at a distance that would make them bolt from an engine, so you can watch behaviour that most visitors never see. A Laikipia horseback safari also gives you the sense of freedom that comes from crossing open country at your own pace, with the wind in your face and Mount Kenya on the horizon.

Laikipia’s private ranches are quiet, with few other visitors. You ride with expert riding guides on well-schooled horses, and you alternate riding with game drives, bush walks and sundowners so each day has variety.

  • Ride among wildlife: zebras, giraffes and antelope on the open plains.
  • Private ranches: few other visitors and wide, empty country.
  • Well-schooled horses: with expert riding guides who set the pace.
  • Variety: game drives and bush walks between rides.
  • Views of Mount Kenya: a dramatic backdrop on clear mornings.

Day-by-Day Laikipia Horseback Safari Itinerary

Days 1 and 2: Arrival and first rides

Day 1, fly to Laikipia. Fly from Wilson Airport to Laikipia and transfer to your riding lodge. You meet the horses and guides and take a short assessment ride in the afternoon, which lets the guides match you with the right horse. It also helps you settle into the saddle before the longer days ahead.

Day 2, riding among plains game. Ride across the plains in the morning, moving quietly among the plains game, and stop for brunch in the bush. In the afternoon you can join a game drive or rest at the lodge, and the day ends with a sundowner.

Days 3 to 5: Longer rides and departure

Day 3, a longer ride and a bush walk. Ride to a scenic viewpoint in the morning, then take a guided bush walk to learn about animal tracks and plants. The evening is spent by the campfire.

Giraffes and zebras often graze side by side, and calm horses let riders watch them at close range.

Day 4, a full riding day. This is the longest day in the saddle, with a picnic lunch and the chance to ride near elephants under the guidance of your riding guide. Guides choose the routes and the distance based on the wildlife and the group’s riding level.

Day 5, return to Nairobi. Enjoy an early short ride or a game drive, then fly back to Nairobi for your onward travel.

Wildlife on a Laikipia Horseback Safari

Plains game

Zebras, giraffes and antelope are the main wildlife seen from the saddle. They are used to horses on Laikipia’s ranches, so you can ride quietly alongside them and watch them graze, play and keep watch.

Elephants and predators

Elephants live on the ranches too, and your riding guide will decide how close it is safe to go. Predators are more likely to be seen from the game-drive vehicle than on horseback, and guides always put safety first.

Riding Requirements for a Laikipia Horseback Safari

This is a specialist trip, so be honest about your riding level. You need to be a confident rider who can rise to the trot, canter and stay in control on open ground. Riding near wildlife needs good balance and calm nerves.

  • Experience: confident at walk, trot and canter, and comfortable riding for several hours.
  • Weight limit: most riding operators set a limit of around 95 kg per rider for the welfare of the horses, so tell us your weight when you book.
  • Assessment ride: the guides check your level on day 1 and match you with a suitable horse.
  • Non-riders: a partner who does not ride can join game drives, walks and camel rides while you are out. Prices differ for non-riders.

A Typical Day on a Laikipia Horseback Safari

Days follow the rhythm of the animals. Wildlife is most active in the cool hours, so the main rides start early and finish before the heat builds, with a second, gentler activity in the afternoon. Here is how a typical day on a Laikipia horseback safari unfolds.

  • Early morning: tea or coffee, then you meet your horse and head out while the air is cool.
  • Morning ride: a steady ride across the plains, with stops to watch animals and take photographs.
  • Brunch or picnic: a break in the bush, with food brought out for the group.
  • Midday rest: time at the lodge to rest, read or swim if the lodge has a pool.
  • Afternoon activity: a game drive, a bush walk or a short ride, depending on the day.
  • Sundowner and dinner: drinks at a viewpoint, then dinner and a campfire.

The pace of the ride is set by the guides, who watch both the horses and the riders. They will walk, trot and canter when the ground allows, and slow down when animals are close. Safety comes first around elephants and other large animals, and guides always decide when to approach and when to stay back. This is why a Laikipia horseback safari suits confident riders who listen to instructions and enjoy working with a guide.

Saddle fit matters on long rides, so tell us your height, your weight and your riding experience when you book. If you have a favourite saddle pad or stirrup leathers, check with us whether you can bring them.

Accommodation and Pace

You spend four nights at a riding lodge or camp, with full-board meals. Staying in one place means the horses and guides get to know you, and you do not spend time packing. Days follow a rhythm of morning and afternoon activity with a rest in between. Browse our Kenya lodges and camps for examples of the accommodation we use, or see our luxury Kenya safari collection for higher-end options.

Best Time for a Laikipia Horseback Safari

The dry seasons, from June to October and from December to March, give the best riding conditions. Some riding camps close during the April and May rains.

  • December to March: warm, dry weather with firm ground and clear skies.
  • April to May: the long rains, when some riding camps close.
  • June to October: the dry season, with excellent riding and good game viewing.
  • November: the short rains begin, so check availability with us.

How Much Does a Laikipia Horseback Safari Cost?

This trip starts from USD 3,900 per adult sharing. The price includes the return flights, which keep the transfers short, as well as the horses, tack and riding guides. The final cost depends on the season, the accommodation and your group size. For a wider guide, read how much an African safari costs.

What Is Included and Not Included

  • Return flights from Nairobi to Laikipia
  • 4 nights at a riding lodge or camp, full board
  • Horses, tack and riding guides
  • Game drives and guided walks
  • Conservancy fees
  • Airstrip transfers

Not included: international flights, the Kenya eTA (about USD 30 per person), travel insurance, tips and gratuities, drinks and personal expenses, and optional activities not listed as included.

Photography on a Laikipia Horseback Safari

Photography from the saddle is different from photography in a vehicle. You need both hands for the reins, so a small camera or a phone in a secure pocket works better than a big zoom lens. Use the game drives and bush walks for longer lenses, and ask your guide to stop at viewpoints so you can take your time. Early mornings and late afternoons give the best light, and Mount Kenya is at its best at sunrise.

What to Pack for a Horseback Safari

  • Your own riding helmet if you have one that fits well, plus riding boots or half chaps.
  • Comfortable riding trousers in neutral colours, and a warm layer for early mornings.
  • Gloves, a hat for downtime, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen.
  • A small camera or phone, and binoculars for game drives.
  • Insect repellent and any malaria prevention your doctor recommends.
  • A soft-sided bag, because small aircraft have luggage limits.

Check what the riding lodge supplies when you book, because helmets and boots vary.

Visas, Health and Safety

Most visitors need a Kenya eTA before arrival, so apply online ahead of your trip and check the current rules for your nationality. Malaria is present in much of Kenya, so speak to your doctor about prevention. Make sure your travel insurance covers horse riding and medical evacuation. With experienced guides, well-schooled horses and clear rules, horseback safaris have a good safety record. For official information, see Magical Kenya and the Kenya Wildlife Service.
