A Kenya and Zanzibar holiday 2027 is one of the best ways to see East Africa at its two extremes: a few days of early starts and big wildlife on safari, followed by a few days of warm sea, white sand and nothing to do. It works because the two halves balance each other. The skill lies in the planning: how to split your nights, which months suit both coasts, how to get from Nairobi to the island and what paperwork each country asks for.
This guide is written by Sense of Adventure, a licensed Kenyan tour operator based in Nairobi that plans private safari and beach holidays. It walks through the decisions in the right order, with honest advice on timing, flights, costs and entry rules, and links to our deeper guides wherever you want more detail.

Quick answer: a Kenya and Zanzibar holiday in 2027
- Best months: January to February and July to October suit both a safari and the beach; March to May is the long rains on both coasts.
- How to split it: put the safari first and the beach last. A good rule is about two-thirds of your nights on safari and one-third on the island.
- Getting there: fly from Nairobi to Zanzibar, a short flight that Kenya Airways lists on its own website. Allow a full day for each transfer.
- Entry: Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, so you need to meet Tanzania’s entry requirements as well as hold your Kenya eTA.
- When to book: 9 to 12 months ahead for July to October and Christmas 2027, and 4 to 6 months ahead for other months.

Why Plan a Kenya and Zanzibar Holiday 2027?
Kenya gives you the wildlife: lions, elephants, cheetahs and, in season, the Great Migration in the Masai Mara. Zanzibar gives you the recovery: warm water, palm-lined beaches and the old streets of Stone Town. Together they make a holiday that is active at the start and restful at the end, with only one short flight between them.
There is another reason to combine them. Many travellers fly a long way to East Africa and want to make the most of the trip. A Kenya and Zanzibar holiday 2027 gives you two very different destinations on one itinerary, through one planner, with one set of connections. If you would rather stay in Kenya for the beach, our guides to combining a safari with a beach holiday and the Diani Beach guide compare the options, and our Zanzibar beach holiday guide covers the island in detail.
- Honeymooners and couples: safari romance followed by a beach villa or boutique hotel. See our Zanzibar honeymoon guide.
- Families: children enjoy the animals first and the sea second, and the beach days let everyone recover.
- Friends and celebrations: a big birthday or anniversary has a natural climax on the island.
- First-time visitors: a single trip that covers wildlife, culture and relaxation.
Best Months for a Kenya and Zanzibar Holiday 2027
Your month decides how both halves feel, so choose it before anything else. Kenya’s safari seasons and Zanzibar’s beach seasons overlap well in two windows, and clash in the long rains.
| 2027 dates | Kenya safari | Zanzibar beach |
|---|---|---|
| January to February | Warm and mostly dry, with green plains and newborn animals in the Mara and good game viewing in Amboseli. | Hot, sunny and humid. A very good time for the beach. |
| March to May | The long rains. Lush landscapes, some muddy roads and some camps closed. Easter Sunday falls on 28 March 2027. | The main rainy season. Heavy showers, some hotels closed and the lowest rates. |
| June | Drying out. Quiet game drives before the peak fee and the migration. | Cooler, drier and breezy. A good month for the beach. |
| July to October | Dry season and the Great Migration in the Mara. Busiest and most expensive. | Dry, cooler and sunny. Peak season on the island too. |
| November | The short rains. Herds heading south and quieter camps. | Short rains, but warm and often sunny between showers. |
| December | Green and warm, with festive demand over Christmas and New Year 2027. | Hot and busy over the festive weeks. |
For most travellers, July to October is the classic choice. The wildlife is at its best and the island is dry. If you want fewer people, January and February are excellent and cheaper in the Mara. The Mara’s park fee also changes in the year, from USD 100 per adult per day from January to June to USD 200 from July to December. We confirm the 2027 rate in your quote. How to Split Your Days on a Kenya and Zanzibar Holiday 2027
The most common mistake is to count your total nights as if they were all usable. They are not. Each move between safari and island takes most of a day, so two nights in one place is really one full day. As a rule of thumb, put about two-thirds of your nights on safari and one-third on the island, and keep the beach for last so you finish rested.
| Total nights | Safari nights | Zanzibar nights | What it gives you |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 4 | 3 | One park, such as the Mara or Amboseli, plus a short beach stay. A fly-in works best. |
| 10 | 6 | 4 | Two parks, for example Amboseli and the Mara, plus a relaxed beach finish. |
| 14 | 8 to 9 | 5 to 6 | Three parks or a conservancy stay, a Stone Town visit and a proper beach rest. |
Within the safari half, our advice is to avoid changing camp every night. Three nights in the Mara is the sweet spot for most itineraries, and our Masai Mara safari 2027 planning guide explains why. If your time is very short, a fly-in safari saves the most hours. Our guide to the Kenya safari and beach holiday shows a similar split along Kenya’s own coast.
On the island, split your nights between two areas if you have five or more. A night or two in Stone Town for the old town, spice markets and Swahili architecture, then the rest on the beach. Read our Stone Town guide to decide how much time it deserves.

Flights From Nairobi to Zanzibar
On a Kenya and Zanzibar holiday 2027 there is no road link, so you fly. Kenya Airways lists flights from Nairobi to Zanzibar on its own website, and the flight is short, so the journey is easy to fit into a single day. Check the current schedule and baggage rules when you book, because timetables and allowances can change.
Connections are where holidays go wrong. If your safari ends in the Mara, you reach Nairobi by road or by light aircraft before the Zanzibar flight. Light aircraft land at Wilson Airport, while international and regional airline flights use Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, so you need time and a transfer between the two. Our guide to JKIA to Wilson Airport explains the timings. As a rule, avoid booking an onward flight on the same day as your last game drive. Spend the last night near Nairobi instead, or arrange the schedule so you have plenty of time. For airport tips, see Nairobi to Zanzibar layover.
Luggage needs thought too. Bush flights usually require a soft bag within a set weight limit, which we confirm for your flights, while airline flights follow the airline’s own allowance. Pack to the lower limit, and read our safari duffel bag guide. Beachwear is light, so it rarely adds much.
Where to Stay on Zanzibar
Zanzibar is a long, narrow island, and the coast you choose changes the holiday. These are the broad choices:
- Stone Town: the historic port, with narrow lanes, markets and old houses. Best as a night or two, not a beach stay.
- The north (Nungwi and Kendwa): beaches where the sea stays deep enough to swim at any state of the tide, with a lively evening scene.
- The east coast (Matemwe, Paje and Jambiani): wide beaches where the tide goes far out. Quieter in the north-east, more active around kite-surfing in the south-east.
- Private islands and small boutique stays: for honeymooners who want seclusion rather than a beach with other guests.
We match your beach to your safari style on every Kenya and Zanzibar holiday 2027 we plan. If you stayed in a quiet conservancy, you may want a quiet corner of the east coast. If you enjoyed the energy of the Mara, the north suits you. Tell us in your enquiry and we will recommend a place at your comfort level.

Two sets of bookings have to line up, so this holiday needs more lead time than a single-country trip. Safari camps are small, and the best ones fill first. Book 9 to 12 months ahead for July to October and for Christmas and New Year, and 4 to 6 months ahead for other months. Beach hotels also fill in those weeks, particularly the smaller ones.
The best order is to secure the safari camps first, then the Zanzibar hotel, then the flights between them. That way you are never left with a flight and no room. A deposit holds your camps and vehicle, and we confirm all terms in writing before you pay. Our guide to how far in advance to book a Kenya safari explains the order in detail.

Entry Rules and Paperwork for Two Countries
Because Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, you cross a border and need to prepare for two sets of entry rules. For Kenya, most visitors need an approved eTA, applied for only on the official portal at etakenya.go.ke. Kenya’s mandatory travel health insurance costs USD 44 per traveller, and each child needs their own policy. A home policy cannot be uploaded or used instead, but keep your own insurance for cancellation and wider cover. See our Kenya mandatory travel insurance guide.
For Tanzania and Zanzibar, check whether your nationality needs a visa and apply through the official Tanzanian channels before you fly. Check the current visa, health and insurance requirements for Tanzania and Zanzibar on those official portals, because they are separate from Kenya’s rules. A yellow fever certificate may be needed when you arrive from Kenya, and our yellow fever certificate guide sets out the rules. We walk you through each step in your quote.
Every Sense of Adventure trip includes AMREF Flying Doctors evacuation cover, explained on our emergency evacuation cover page. Before you book, we brief you on the current official travel advice for your route and confirm every detail in writing.
Packing for Bush and Beach
The trick for a Kenya and Zanzibar holiday 2027 is to pack two small wardrobes in one soft bag. For safari, take layers in khaki, olive or sand, a warm fleece for dawn drives, a hat and sunglasses. For the island, take swimwear, light cotton clothes and reef-safe sunscreen. Zanzibar is a mainly Muslim island, so cover shoulders and knees in Stone Town and in villages. Resorts are relaxed, but a light scarf or shirt helps on the street.

Kenya and Zanzibar Holiday 2027: FAQs
When is the best time for a Kenya and Zanzibar holiday in 2027?
January to February and July to October suit both a safari and the beach. March to May is the long rains on both coasts, with lower rates and some closed camps and hotels.
How many days do I need for a Kenya and Zanzibar holiday?
Seven nights is the minimum for a safari plus a short beach stay, and ten nights is more comfortable. Fourteen nights lets you add a second park and a Stone Town visit.
How do I get from Nairobi to Zanzibar?
You fly. Kenya Airways lists Nairobi to Zanzibar flights on its website, and it is a short flight. Allow a full day for the transfer.
Should I do the safari or the beach first?
Do the safari first and finish on the beach. Safari days start early and are active, so the island is a better way to rest before the flight home.
Do I need a separate visa and insurance for Zanzibar?
Yes. Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, so you must meet Tanzania’s entry requirements, which can include a visa and insurance, as well as hold your Kenya eTA and Kenya’s mandatory travel health insurance. We walk you through each step in your quote.
What does Kenya’s mandatory travel insurance cost?
Kenya’s mandatory travel health insurance costs USD 44 per traveller. Each child needs their own policy, and a home policy cannot be used instead.
Is Kenya’s coast a good alternative to Zanzibar?
Yes. Diani Beach is an easy alternative with a short flight from the Mara, and it avoids a second country. Zanzibar offers Stone Town and a different island feel.
