Planning a Masai Mara safari 2027 trip is easiest when you make the decisions in the right order: first the month, then the length of stay, then where you sleep and how you travel, and only then the camps and extras. Get the order right and everything else falls into place. Get it wrong and you can end up paying peak-season prices for a quiet month, or finding the camp you wanted fully booked.
This step-by-step guide is written by Sense of Adventure, a licensed Kenyan tour operator based in Nairobi that plans private Mara safaris every month of the year. It walks you through ten steps, from choosing your 2027 dates to packing your bag, and links to our detailed guides wherever you want to go deeper.

Quick answer: planning a Masai Mara safari in 2027
- Best months: July to October for the Great Migration; January to March for green plains, newborn animals and lower fees.
- Park fees: currently USD 100 per adult per day from January to June and USD 200 from July to December. We confirm the 2027 rate in your quote.
- How long: three nights is ideal; two nights works if you fly in; four or more for the migration.
- Getting there: about 5 to 6 hours by road from Nairobi, or around an hour by light aircraft.
- When to book: 9 to 12 months ahead for July to October and Christmas 2027, which means now; 4 to 6 months ahead for other months.

Step 1: Choose Your Month in 2027
Your month decides almost everything else about your Masai Mara safari 2027 plans: what you will see, how busy the reserve is, which park fee applies and how early you need to book. The resident lions, cheetahs, elephants and plains game are in the Mara all year, so there is no bad month. There are simply different safaris.
| 2027 dates | What to expect | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| January to March | Warm and mostly dry, green plains, newborn animals, fewer vehicles. Lower park fee. | Big cats, photography, value |
| Late March to May | The long rains. Lush landscapes, some muddy roads, some camps closed, lowest rates. Easter Sunday falls on 28 March 2027. | Flexible travellers on a budget |
| June | Drying out, grass still long, herds often gathering to the south. The last month of the lower fee. | Quiet game drives before the peak |
| July to October | Dry season and the Great Migration, with Mara River crossings most likely from late July to September. Busiest and most expensive. | The migration, first-time visitors |
| November | The short rains. Herds usually heading south, quieter camps and better value. | Resident wildlife, fewer crowds |
| December | Green and warm, with festive demand over Christmas and New Year 2027. | Family holidays, festive safaris |
If the migration is your priority, read our Great Migration 2027 guide for honest river-crossing odds, and our Masai Mara or Serengeti month by month guide to see where the herds are likely to be. For the weather across Kenya, see Kenya weather by month.

Step 2: Understand the Park Fees
The Masai Mara National Reserve is run by Narok County, not the Kenya Wildlife Service, and its fees are set by the county. Park fees are one of the biggest single costs of a Mara safari, so it pays to understand them before you choose your dates.
| Visitor | January to June (per day) | July to December (per day) |
|---|---|---|
| Non-resident adult (18+) | USD 100 | USD 200 |
| Non-resident child (9 to 17) | USD 50 | USD 50 |
| Children aged 8 and under | Free | Free |
- The 1 July jump: the adult fee doubles on 1 July. A three-night stay in late June can cost a couple several hundred dollars less in fees than the same stay a week later.
- Cashless only: fees are paid by card or mobile money, not cash. When you book with us, they are included in your price and we handle payment at the gate.
- Conservancies charge their own fee: if you stay in a private conservancy, its daily fee is usually included in your camp rate instead. Our guide to conservancy fees in Kenya explains how this works.
For gate details, ticket rules and the reserve itself, see our Masai Mara National Reserve guide.
Step 3: Decide How Many Nights
For most Masai Mara safari 2027 itineraries, three nights is the sweet spot: it gives you two full days in the Mara plus an arrival and a departure game drive. Two nights can work if you fly in, because you land in time for an afternoon drive. By road, two nights leaves you with only one full day, which is why we rarely recommend it. Our honest answer to is 2 days in the Masai Mara enough? sets out the trade-offs.
For the migration, plan four nights or more. River crossings cannot be predicted, and the extra days give your guide time to wait at the Mara River on the right morning. Photographers and anyone combining the reserve with a conservancy also benefit from a longer stay.
Step 4: Choose Where to Stay
Where you sleep shapes your Masai Mara safari 2027 more than any other choice. There are three broad options, and each suits a different traveller.
- Inside the reserve: closest to the Mara River and the migration crossings, with game drives straight from camp. The trade-off is more vehicles at popular sightings in peak season. See our guide to luxury lodges in the Masai Mara.
- The Mara Triangle: the quieter north-western sector across the Mara River, with fewer vehicles and strong crossing points. Read about Mara Triangle camps.
- A private conservancy: Maasai-owned land bordering the reserve, with a strict limit on vehicles, plus walking safaris and night drives that the reserve does not allow. Compare Mara North, Naboisho and Olare Motorogi.
Many of our guests split their stay: two nights in a conservancy for privacy and walks, then one or two nights near the river for the migration. Our guide to choosing your Masai Mara camp location compares the options, and is the Masai Mara crowded? explains how to avoid vehicle jams.

Step 5: Choose Road or Fly-In
By road, the drive from Nairobi to the Mara takes about 5 to 6 hours in a private Land Cruiser, with a stop at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint on the way. It is the better-value option and easy to combine with Lake Naivasha or Lake Nakuru. By air, scheduled light aircraft fly from Wilson Airport in Nairobi to the Mara’s airstrips in around an hour, so you gain most of a day at each end.
If you fly, pack for the luggage limit on light aircraft, usually about 15 kg per person including hand luggage, in a soft bag. Our guides to the Nairobi to Masai Mara distance and getting from JKIA to Wilson Airport cover timings and connections. Both options work well for a Masai Mara safari 2027; the right one depends on your time and budget.
Step 6: Set Your Budget
The cost of a Masai Mara safari 2027 trip depends on four things: the month, where you stay, how you travel and how many nights you book. We quote every trip in two comfort levels, Midrange 3* and Standard Luxury 4*, so you can see exactly what an upgrade buys. These are real Sense of Adventure trips that include the Mara, with the starting price shown on each trip page, in US dollars per person sharing:
- Kenya Classic Safari (7 days): Amboseli, Lake Naivasha and three nights in the Mara by road. From USD 1,650.
- Masai Mara Honeymoon Safari (4 days): private game drives and a romantic Mara stay. From USD 1,900.
- Great Migration Photographic Safari (5 days): built around the river crossings. From USD 2,400.
- Fly-in Masai Mara Luxury Safari (4 days): skip the drive and stay in a top-tier camp. From USD 3,200.
Your written quote confirms the price for your dates, including park fees and any peak-season supplement. See every route on our Masai Mara safari packages page, or read how much an African safari costs for a wider view.

A few experiences turn a good Masai Mara safari 2027 trip into an unforgettable one. Decide on them before you book, because some fill up early.
- A hot-air balloon flight: about an hour over the plains at dawn, followed by a bush breakfast. Book it when you confirm your trip, especially from July to October.
- A Maasai village visit: a chance to learn about pastoral life from the people who share this land with the wildlife. We arrange visits that benefit the community directly.
- Walks and night drives: available in the conservancies but not inside the reserve. Our guide to night drives on safari explains what you might see.
- Another park or a beach: the Mara pairs naturally with Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru by road, Amboseli via Nairobi, or a few days on the coast to finish. Our Kenya safari packages page shows the most popular combinations.

Step 8: Book at the Right Time
The Mara’s best camps are small, and the most popular weeks sell out early. As a guide, book 9 to 12 months ahead for July to October and for Christmas and New Year, and 4 to 6 months ahead for other months. For a Masai Mara safari 2027 in migration season, that means the best time to secure your camp is now, in late 2026 or early 2027. A deposit holds your camps and vehicle, and we confirm all terms in writing before you pay.

Step 9: Sort the Paperwork and Health Checks
The paperwork for a Masai Mara safari 2027 trip is simple if you start early. Three things need your attention:
- Kenya eTA: most visitors need an approved electronic travel authorisation, applied for only on the official portal at etakenya.go.ke. Apply once your dates are fixed.
- Mandatory travel insurance: Kenya’s travel health insurance costs USD 44 per traveller, and each child needs their own policy. A home policy cannot be uploaded or used instead, but keep your own travel insurance for cancellation and wider cover. Our Kenya mandatory travel insurance guide explains how to buy it.
- Health: see a travel clinic 6 to 8 weeks before you fly. Malaria prophylaxis is advised for the Mara, and our yellow fever certificate guide sets out the rules for your route.
Every Sense of Adventure trip includes AMREF Flying Doctors evacuation cover, explained on our emergency evacuation cover page. Before you book, we brief you on the current official travel advice for your route and confirm every detail in writing.
Step 10: Pack for the Mara
Packing for a Masai Mara safari 2027 is about layers. The Mara sits at around 1,500 metres or more, so mornings are cold and afternoons warm. Pack layers in khaki, olive or sand colours, a warm fleece for dawn drives and balloon flights, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and binoculars. Bring a light rain jacket from November to May, and a camera with a good zoom. Plastic carrier bags are banned in Kenya, so pack in reusable pouches. Our guides to the right safari duffel bag and what not to bring on safari will help you pack light.
