Kenya Safari in August 2027: Weather, Migration, Fees and Crowds Explained

Wildebeest crossing the Mara River, the river herds follow on the Masai Mara to Serengeti migration route

A Kenya safari in August 2027 is the classic safari month: dry weather, clear skies, wildlife gathered around water and the Great Migration in the Masai Mara. It is also the busiest and most expensive month of the year, so the quality of your trip depends on good decisions made early. This guide explains what August is really like, what the Mara fee is, how to avoid the crowds and which parks other than the Mara are worth your time.

This guide is written by Sense of Adventure, a licensed Kenyan tour operator based in Nairobi that plans private safaris in pop-up roof Land Cruisers with your own driver-guide. You will find honest advice on weather, the migration, fees and booking, and links to our deeper guides wherever you want more detail.

Wildebeest crossing the Mara River on a Kenya safari in August 2027
Wildebeest plunging into the Mara River. The herds are in the Mara from July to October, which makes August a prime month to watch for crossings.

Quick answer: a Kenya safari in August 2027

  • Weather: dry and mostly sunny, with cool mornings and evenings and warm days. It is the dry season, so roads are firm and there is little rain.
  • Migration: the herds are in the Masai Mara from July to October, and August is a prime month for Mara River crossings, which cannot be promised.
  • Mara fee: USD 200 per adult per day from July to December. Children aged 9 to 17 pay USD 50, children aged 8 and under are free, and payment is cashless.
  • Crowds: August is peak season. Conservancies, early starts and quieter parks help you avoid the busiest sightings.
  • Booking: 9 to 12 months ahead for August, which means the window is open now.

Why Choose a Kenya Safari in August 2027?

August combines three advantages. The weather is dry, so game drives are comfortable and tracks are firm. The grass is shorter, so animals are easier to see. And water is scarce, so wildlife concentrates along rivers and waterholes where you can find it. For first-time visitors it is the easiest month to get right, and for repeat visitors it is the month when the Mara is at its busiest and most dramatic.

There are trade-offs. Lodge rates and the Mara reserve fee are at their highest, vehicles gather at the best sightings, and the finest camps are booked far ahead. The sections below help you weigh each of those, and our best time to visit East Africa guide shows how August compares with the rest of the year.

  • Best for: first-time visitors, migration seekers and photographers who want clear skies.
  • Less ideal for: travellers who want low prices, empty roads or lush green scenery.
  • Good compromise: a conservancy stay for fewer vehicles, or a quieter park alongside the Mara.

August Weather in Kenya

August falls in Kenya’s cool, dry season. Days are warm and sunny, mornings and evenings can be cold on an open vehicle, and rain is uncommon in the main safari parks. Dust is more noticeable than in the green months, so a scarf and a lens cloth are useful. For the full picture, see our Kenya weather by month guide.

The Great Migration on a Kenya Safari in August 2027

The Great Migration is a year-round movement of wildebeest and zebra between Tanzania and Kenya. According to Magical Kenya, the herds arrive in the Masai Mara from July to October, which is also when they cross the Mara River. August sits in the middle of that window, so it is a prime time for crossings.

Crossings cannot be promised. The herds decide when to cross, and some days they gather at the bank and turn back. A trip of three or more nights in the Mara gives you several chances, and our Great Migration 2027 guide explains the odds and the positions in detail. If crossings are your priority, our Great Migration safari page shows trips built around them.

Where you stay matters as much as when. The reserve gives the closest access to the river but also the most vehicles at a crossing. A private conservancy has fewer vehicles and may allow night drives and walks, but the river may be a longer drive away. Our guide to the Masai Mara reserve vs private conservancies compares the two.

What Waiting at a Crossing Is Like

Watching for a river crossing is mostly patience. Herds often gather on the bank, graze, move along the edge and sometimes turn away, then return later. Your driver-guide reads the behaviour of the animals, chooses a position with a clear view and switches off the engine so you can listen as well as look. Some crossings begin suddenly after a long wait, so it helps to keep your camera ready and your lens cap off.

  • Bring snacks and water: a wait can be long, and a picnic breakfast or lunch keeps everyone comfortable.
  • Agree your plan: decide with your guide how long to wait and when to move on to other sightings.
  • Enjoy the rest: lions, elephants and giraffes are resident, so the days between crossings are rarely empty.

A private vehicle helps here because nobody else has to agree to wait. Tell us how much of your trip you want to spend at the river, and we will balance it against the rest of the reserve in your quote.

Reserve or conservancy for the herds?

Tell us how close you want to be to the river and how much you mind other vehicles. We will recommend a base for your August dates.

Masai Mara Fees on a Kenya Safari in August 2027

The Masai Mara reserve fee changes during the year. From July to December the fee is USD 200 per adult per day, double the USD 100 per adult per day charged from January to June. A child aged 9 to 17 pays USD 50, children aged 8 and under are free, and payment is cashless. We confirm the 2027 rate in your quote.

Because August is in the higher-fee period, the number of days you spend inside the reserve has a real effect on the total. Three nights usually give a good chance of big cats and crossings, while a fourth or fifth night adds more fees without always adding more sightings. Conservancies charge their own fees, which our guide to conservancy fees in Kenya explains. For the full picture of the reserve, read our Masai Mara National Reserve guide and our Masai Mara safari 2027 planning guide.

Crowds in August: How to Avoid Them

August is peak season, and the most famous sightings attract the most vehicles. You cannot remove the crowds completely, but you can reduce their effect. Our guide to whether the Masai Mara is crowded goes into more detail.

  • Start early: the first hour after sunrise is quiet, and many vehicles are still at breakfast.
  • Stay in a conservancy: fewer vehicles are allowed, so sightings are calmer.
  • Use a private vehicle: your guide decides when to stay and when to leave a crowded sighting. Our private Kenya safari page explains what that means.
  • Add a quieter park: spend part of the trip in Amboseli or Samburu, where vehicle numbers are lower.
  • Avoid the last days of the month: if your dates are flexible, ask us which weeks are quieter.

Parks Other Than the Mara in August

The Mara is not the only place to go in August. The dry season suits several other parks, and combining two of them gives a more balanced trip.

  • Amboseli: large elephant herds close to the swamps, with Kilimanjaro behind them at sunrise. See our Amboseli safari page.
  • Samburu: dry northern scenery and species you will not see in the south, with wildlife gathering along the river. Read about Samburu National Reserve.
  • Lake Nakuru: a compact park with rhinos and easy game drives, close to Nairobi. See our Lake Nakuru safari guide.
  • Ol Pejeta and Laikipia: rhinos in a well-protected setting, and a wider choice of activities. Read about Ol Pejeta.
  • Tsavo: big landscapes and red elephants, with waterholes that concentrate wildlife in the dry season. See our Tsavo safari page.

Park fees differ from park to park, and we confirm the rate for each in your written quote. The Kenya Wildlife Service is the official source for park rules and fees.
