Kenya safari packages from the USA work best when they are built around you: your own vehicle and guide, camps chosen for privacy rather than volume, and a pace that respects the long flight you have just taken. Sense of Adventure is a licensed Kenyan tour operator and DMC based in Nairobi, and we design private, tailor-made safaris for American travelers, from a four-day fly-in escape to the Masai Mara to a twelve-day journey through private conservancies that ends on the Swahili island of Lamu.
This page is written for the travelers we hear from most often in the United States: couples marking a honeymoon, anniversary or milestone birthday, families bringing three generations together, and travel advisors or incentive planners looking for a reliable ground handler in Kenya. Every price below is the “from” price on the matching trip page, per person sharing, in US dollars.

Private and Luxury: How an American-Style Safari Works in Kenya
Most of the Americans who contact us about Kenya safari packages from the USA have done their research. They know they want lions and elephants, and many have the Great Migration on a bucket list. What they often have not yet decided is how to safari: by road or by air, in the national reserve or a private conservancy, at a comfortable midrange level or in a small luxury camp. Those four choices shape the experience more than the list of parks does, so here is how we explain them.
Your own vehicle and guide
Private guiding is at the heart of every trip on this page. On road safaris, that means your own 4×4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, reclining seats and charging ports, and a professional driver-guide who stays with you from the first morning to the last. On fly-in trips, you have a private vehicle and guide in the safari areas listed on each trip. You decide when to leave camp, how long to sit with a leopard, and when to break for a picnic. For photographers, couples and families with young children, this freedom is the single biggest upgrade on any safari. Our private Kenya safari page explains the approach in more depth.
Private conservancies or the national reserve
The Masai Mara National Reserve is the famous core of the ecosystem, with the river crossings and big open plains. Bordering it are private conservancies leased from Maasai landowners. Conservancies limit the number of camps and vehicles, and they allow activities the main reserve does not, such as guided walks, night drives and off-road driving to sightings. Your fees also support the communities who own the land. Many of our luxury trips for US travelers are built around a conservancy camp, with day trips into the reserve when the herds are there. Read Masai Mara reserve vs conservancies for a side-by-side comparison.
Fly-in or road
Kenya’s parks are linked by short scheduled light-aircraft flights from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport. Flying turns a full day on the road into roughly an hour in the air, so it suits shorter trips, travelers who want to see several regions, and anyone who would rather spend the time on game drives. The trade-offs are cost and luggage: light aircraft usually allow around 15 to 20 kg per person in soft bags. A road safari is more affordable and lets you see the countryside between parks. Many US clients mix the two, driving out and flying back. Our guide to fly-in vs road safaris in Kenya covers the details.
Midrange 3-star or Standard Luxury 4-star
For tailor-made road safaris, we quote two levels side by side: Midrange 3* and Standard Luxury 4*. Both use the same private vehicle and guide; the difference is the lodges and camps. The fly-in trips on this page are built around luxury camps, and we name the properties in your written quote. If you are weighing up budget, our article on how much an African safari costs breaks down where the money goes, and our luxury Kenya safari collection shows what the top tier looks like.
Our Private Kenya Safari Packages for US Travelers
These are the Kenya safari packages from the USA that we recommend most to American clients. Each price is the starting price on the trip page, per person sharing, in US dollars, before international flights. Because we price in dollars, most American cards pay with no currency conversion; if you pay from a non-USD account, the conversion happens at your bank. Your final quote depends on dates, camps and group size, and every trip can be adjusted.

Safaris for Milestones: Honeymoons, Anniversaries and Big Birthdays
A large share of the people who ask us about Kenya safari packages from the USA are celebrating something. A 40th, 50th or 60th birthday, a silver or ruby anniversary, a retirement, or a wedding. A safari suits these moments because the memories are shared and specific: the morning a cheetah walked past the vehicle, the dinner under the stars, the toast at sunset over the plains.
For milestone birthdays and anniversaries, the five-day Celebration Safari flies you into a private Masai Mara conservancy and builds the trip around one special day. It includes a sunrise hot-air balloon flight with champagne breakfast, a private bush dinner with a celebration cake, night drives and a guided walk with a Maasai guide. It works for a couple or a group of friends, and we can arrange a surprise with the camp if you tell us privately.
For honeymooners, the eight-day Lamu and Masai Mara Honeymoon pairs big-cat country with Lamu, a car-free island of dhows, narrow lanes and old Swahili houses. If you want the most exclusive version, the twelve-day Luxury Fly-in Safari adds Laikipia and a star-bed night between the Mara and Lamu. Couples who want something truly once-in-a-lifetime often choose Kenya and Rwanda, combining Mara game drives with an hour among mountain gorillas. Our Kenya honeymoon safari page has more romantic routes, and the luxury Kenya safari lodges guide shows the style of camp we use.

Multigenerational and Family Safaris for US Families
Families traveling together, often with grandparents covering the trip, are one of the groups we plan for most often among our Kenya safari packages from the USA. The key is to remove the long drives and give everyone room to do their own thing. On the seven-day Multigenerational Family Fly-in Safari, you fly from Nairobi to a family-friendly Laikipia conservancy for rhinos, camel rides and junior ranger activities, then on to the Masai Mara for lions, cheetahs and elephants. Camps have family suites and pools, and a private vehicle in the Mara means grandparents can rest while the kids go tracking with the guide.
Some activities and camps set minimum ages, including balloon flights and walking safaris, so tell us everyone’s age when you inquire. Our safari minimum age guide, multigenerational family safari guide and Kenya family safari packages page will help you plan.
Matching Kenya’s seasons to the US school calendar
- Spring break (March to April): March is usually warm and dry before the long rains, which tend to arrive in April. Expect green landscapes, fewer vehicles and good value later in the season.
- Summer vacation (June to August): Kenya’s dry season and the best time for game viewing, with the Great Migration usually reaching the Mara from about July. This is peak season, so book camps early.
- Thanksgiving (late November): the short rains bring lush scenery, baby animals and excellent birding, usually as afternoon showers. A week off at Thanksgiving fits a four- or five-day fly-in trip well.
- Christmas and New Year: warm, green and festive, and one of the busiest weeks of the year. Our Christmas safari in Kenya guide explains how far ahead to book.
For US summer and the Christmas holidays, we suggest starting the conversation 9 to 12 months ahead, especially for families who need several rooms in one small camp.

The simplest way from the United States to Kenya is the Kenya Airways nonstop from New York JFK to Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, a flight of about 14 hours on a Boeing 787. It currently leaves New York in the early afternoon and lands in Nairobi the following morning, which is ideal for a safari: you arrive with a full day to rest before flying out to the bush.
From the West Coast, the Midwest or the South, most travelers connect once, either through New York or through a European, Gulf or Ethiopian hub. Schedules change by season, so check current times with your airline, and send us your flight details once booked so we can time your transfers and first night correctly.
Time difference by US time zone
Kenya stays on East Africa Time (UTC+3) all year and does not use daylight saving. So the gap changes by an hour when US clocks change:
- Eastern: Nairobi is 8 hours ahead in winter, 7 hours ahead in summer.
- Central: 9 hours ahead in winter, 8 in summer.
- Mountain: 10 hours ahead in winter, 9 in summer (Arizona stays at 10 all year).
- Pacific: 11 hours ahead in winter, 10 in summer.
- Hawaii: 13 hours ahead all year.
Because you arrive tired, we recommend starting all Kenya safari packages from the USA with a night in Nairobi. Our Nairobi team meets you at the airport and handles every transfer from that point. If you have an extra half day, the city’s wildlife sights make a gentle first outing, and our blog guide Kenya safari for Americans: step-by-step planning guide covers flights and packing in more detail.
A 12-Day Luxury Fly-in Journey, Day by Day
This sample follows our Luxury Fly-in Safari Kenya, listed from USD 8,900 per person sharing, with eleven nights in luxury camps, lodges and hotels. You fly between every stop, with a private vehicle and guide in both safari areas, and the best time to travel is June to March.
- Day 1, arrive in Nairobi: we meet your flight and transfer you to a luxury hotel or private villa to rest after the journey from the US.
- Day 2, fly to the Masai Mara: a short flight to a luxury camp in a private conservancy, then your first afternoon game drive in your own vehicle.
- Day 3, private game drives: a full day out with off-road access to sightings, followed by an evening night drive to look for animals that only move after dark.
- Day 4, balloon and bush dinner: a sunrise hot-air balloon flight with champagne breakfast, and a private dinner in the bush that evening.
- Day 5, on foot with the Maasai: a guided walk with a Maasai guide, then an afternoon game drive.
- Day 6, fly to Laikipia: check in at a luxury lodge with views of Mount Kenya.
- Day 7, rhinos and wild dogs: a walking safari and game drive in search of rhinos, elephants and wild dogs.
- Day 8, your choice: an optional horse ride, camel ride or helicopter flight, then a night sleeping out on a star-bed.
- Day 9, fly to Lamu: fly via Nairobi to the coast and transfer by boat to your boutique hotel.
- Day 10, Lamu Old Town: a guided tour of the old town, then a sunset dhow cruise.
- Day 11, at leisure: a free day on the beach or a private dhow excursion.
- Day 12, fly home: fly from Lamu to Nairobi to connect with your flight back to the US.
Domestic flights, the balloon flight, night drives, walks, the star-bed night, conservancy fees and meals with most drinks on safari are included. Short on time? The four-day Fly-in Masai Mara Luxury Safari gives you the conservancy experience alone. Read our Laikipia plateau safari guide and Masai Mara safari page to see what each region adds.

Entry and Health: The Short Version
Entry: US passport holders apply for a Kenya eTA before travel on the official portal, etakenya.go.ke. Since October 2026, Kenya’s mandatory travel health insurance is bought as part of the same eTA application: USD 44 per traveler, with each child needing their own policy. A US policy cannot be uploaded or used instead. Our Kenya mandatory travel insurance guide explains it step by step, and we remind you of both once your dates are set. Keep buying your own trip insurance at home for cancellation and medical cover.
Health: book a travel clinic visit 6 to 8 weeks before you fly to review routine vaccines and any travel vaccines your doctor recommends. Malaria prophylaxis is advised for the main safari parks and the coast, including Lamu, and our Kenya safari malaria guide covers the practical side: repellent, long sleeves at dusk, and which camps provide nets. Bring prescription medication in your carry-on with a little extra. Every Sense of Adventure trip includes AMREF Flying Doctors evacuation cover, explained on our emergency evacuation cover page.
Before you book, we brief you on the current official travel advice for your route and confirm every detail of your trip in writing.
For US Travel Advisors and Incentive Planners
Many Americans book Africa through a trusted travel advisor, and many US companies reward top performers with incentive trips. We work with both as a licensed Kenyan DMC, and any of our Kenya safari packages from the USA can be adapted for an advisor’s client or an incentive group. We handle everything on the ground so you can focus on your client relationship.
- Travel advisors and wholesalers: we handle FIT and group arrivals with meet and greet, private vehicles, camps, park fees and domestic flights, and send written quotes. Our Kenya DMC for travel agents page explains rates, white-label itineraries and how we work with agencies.
- Incentive and MICE planners: the four-day Corporate Incentive Fly-in Safari flies your group into the Masai Mara with private vehicles, a dedicated Sense of Adventure host, a sundowner and a private bush dinner, with meeting space and branded touches on request. See Kenya incentive travel and corporate group safari retreats for program ideas.
- Lead times: for groups traveling July to October or over Christmas, start 9 to 12 months ahead to secure enough rooms in one camp.
Advisors can email us at info@senseofadventure.co.ke with “Trade” in the subject line, and we reply with availability and a proposal for your client.
