Kenia Safari für deutsche Reisende: Der komplette Planungsleitfaden

Sense of Adventure guests at a Masai Mara viewpoint on a Kenya safari package from Germany

The guide has been quiet for ten minutes, following tracks in the dust that none of us can read. Then he stops the Land Cruiser, cuts the engine and lifts his binoculars without a word. Under a balanites tree two hundred metres away, a leopard is lying along a branch with her tail hanging down like a rope. He writes the time and the GPS position in his notebook before he lets us take a single photograph. That attention to detail is the whole trip in one gesture, and it is why German guests tend to come back.

Wer eine Kenia Safari planen will, braucht vor allem verlässliche Informationen, and that is what this guide sets out to give. We have written it in English, with the German terms you will meet along the way, so that it is useful to travellers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland alike. It covers the Auswärtiges Amt advice, the eTA and Kenya’s new travel insurance, the Lufthansa connection from Frankfurt, what a safari really costs and what is included, the Sommerferien question, health, sustainability and how to choose an operator.

Sense of Adventure is a Nairobi safari company licensed by Kenya’s Tourism Regulatory Authority (TRA1/47/C01/77087). We run private safaris in 4×4 Land Cruisers with pop-up roofs, and German-speaking guests make up a growing share of our bookings. This guide was written on 29 October 2026 using the Auswärtiges Amt’s current Reise- und Sicherheitshinweise, the official eTA portal and our own trip pages. Where a fact may change, we date it.

✅ Kenia Safari planen: Das Wichtigste in Kürze

  • Einreise: a Kenya eTA from the official portal (from about USD 30) and the mandatory Kenyan travel health insurance (about USD 44), both applied for online before departure. No visa.
  • Sicherheit: the Auswärtiges Amt carries a Teilreisewarnung for the north-eastern counties and parts of the North Rift. The Masai Mara, Amboseli, the Rift Valley lakes, Tsavo and Diani are not named.
  • Flug: Lufthansa flies nonstop Frankfurt to Nairobi in about 8 hours; Munich, Berlin, Hamburg and Düsseldorf connect once. Kenya is 1 hour ahead in summer, 2 in winter.
  • Kosten: our listed private safaris run from USD 1,290 per person for 5 days to USD 4,650 for 14 days, before international flights. Expect USD 350 to 600 per person per day for a comfortable mid-range safari.
  • Reisezeit: July to October for the Great Migration, which overlaps the Sommerferien; January to February for big cats and clear Kilimanjaro mornings; October and early December for value.
  • Dauer: seven days on the ground for a first safari; 10 to 14 days with a Badeverlängerung on Diani Beach or Zanzibar.

Schritt 1: Why Kenya, and How It Compares with Namibia and South Africa

German travellers usually shortlist three safari countries, and the differences are real. Namibia is a self-drive country of desert landscapes and long distances, with lower wildlife density outside Etosha. South Africa offers Kruger, partly malaria-free reserves and good roads, with thicker bush that makes sightings harder to find. Kenya is the classic East African savanna: open plains in the Masai Mara where you see animals from a kilometre away, the Great Migration between July and October, elephant herds below Kilimanjaro in Amboseli, the flamingo and rhino lakes of the Rift Valley, and the Indian Ocean three hours from the parks.

Kenya is also a guided-safari country rather than a self-drive one. For most German guests that is an advantage: a trained driver-guide finds the animals, explains what you are seeing, handles the park formalities and drives the roads you would not want to drive yourself. Our comparisons Kenya vs South Africa and Kenya vs Tanzania set the options side by side without favouring our own country more than the facts allow.

Schritt 2: Read the Auswärtiges Amt Advice Properly

The Reise- und Sicherheitshinweise für Kenia are the reference for German travellers, and the first thing to understand is that Kenya has a Teilreisewarnung, a partial warning, not a full one. As of 29 October 2026 the Auswärtiges Amt warns against travel to Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Lamu counties in the east (except Lamu Island and Manda Island, where it advises against non-essential travel). It strongly advises against travel to Baringo, West Pokot and Turkana in the North Rift and to northern Tana River County including the A3 road, and it asks for special caution in the wider North Rift, the Laikipia, Meru and Isiolo border area, Samburu and the Ethiopian border region. Register with the ELEFAND crisis list before you travel.

Place a safari route on that map and the picture is clear. The Masai Mara, Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha, Tsavo and Diani Beach lie in the south and west of Kenya and are not named in the advice. Samburu and Laikipia are flagged for special caution, so if you want the northern circuit, ask us to talk you through current conditions before you decide. None of our standard routes enters a warning area, and we will compare your exact route with the advice in writing. Austrian travellers should read the BMEIA Reiseinformation and Swiss travellers the EDA Reisehinweise; all three ministries update often.

Expert tip from our Nairobi team: German Reiserücktrittsversicherungen usually pay out only for a full Reisewarnung covering your destination, not for a Teilreisewarnung elsewhere in the country. Read the small print and ask your insurer in writing how the current advice affects your policy before you pay a deposit.

Schritt 3: eTA, Passport and Kenya’s Travel Insurance

German, Austrian and Swiss passport holders need no visa for Kenya, but two things must be arranged online before departure, both through the official portal at etakenya.go.ke. Beware of look-alike sites that charge several times the official fee.

  • Kenya eTA: required for all travellers including children. The Auswärtiges Amt advises applying no earlier than three months and no later than 72 hours before departure, and notes that an approved eTA does not guarantee entry, which rests with the border officer. The fee is from about USD 30; check the portal for the current amount.
  • Reisepass: valid for at least six months beyond the planned end of your stay. A Personalausweis is not accepted. Carry proof of your return or onward flight.
  • Kenyan travel health insurance: since 5 October 2026 visitors staying under 12 months must buy a Kenyan policy with at least USD 50,000 of cover during the eTA application, at about USD 44 per adult plus a small fee. The Auswärtiges Amt states that other providers are not accepted and the Kenyan policy must be shown on arrival. Our mandatory travel insurance guide explains it.
  • Your own Reiseversicherung: the Kenyan policy does not replace an Auslandskrankenversicherung with Rücktransport, or a Reiserücktrittsversicherung. Buy both at home.

Every Sense of Adventure safari includes AMREF Flying Doctors evacuation cover for the days you travel with us, which is a genuine safety net in remote parks but not a substitute for your own insurance.

Schritt 4: Flights from Germany to Nairobi

Frankfurt is the gateway. Lufthansa operates the Frankfurt to Nairobi route, reported as daily, with a flight time of around eight hours and an evening arrival that makes a first night in Nairobi the natural start. Condor has also served Nairobi from Frankfurt in some seasons. From Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, Düsseldorf and Stuttgart, the usual routes connect once.

FromRouteTypical total timeNotes
FrankfurtLufthansa nonstopAbout 8 hoursDaytime departure, evening arrival in Nairobi
Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, DüsseldorfLufthansa via Frankfurt10 to 12 hoursOne airline, one ticket, luggage checked through

Any German airportTurkish via Istanbul, Qatar via Doha, Emirates via Dubai, Ethiopian via Addis Ababa12 to 15 hoursOften the keenest fares; Ethiopian has a short final leg

Times are approximate; check the airlines for your dates. Kenya stays on UTC+3 all year, so it is 2 hours ahead of Germany in winter and only 1 hour ahead in summer. There is no jet lag worth mentioning. Our guide to booking flights or safari first explains why we suggest reserving the camps before you buy flights in peak season.

Schritt 5: Costs, and Exactly What Is Included

Kenya prices safaris in US dollars. We do not quote euros because exchange rates move daily; your written quote states the dollar amount and your bank converts it. The question German guests ask most is not “how much” but “what exactly is in the price”, so here is both. Our guide to how much an African safari costs goes deeper.

LevelPer person per day, on the groundWhat you get
Comfortable mid-rangeUSD 350 to 600Private 4×4 with driver-guide, good tented camps and lodges, all park fees and meals
PremiumUSD 600 to 1,000Smaller camps in conservancies, some internal flights, more inclusions
LuxuryUSD 1,000 to 2,000+Exclusive camps, fly-in throughout, private guides, drinks and extras included

Included in every Sense of Adventure safari: a private 4×4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof and a window seat for every guest, an English-speaking driver-guide, accommodation and meals as listed on the trip page, park and conservancy fees as listed, airport and hotel transfers in Nairobi, bottled water in the vehicle and AMREF evacuation cover. Not included: international flights, the eTA and Kenyan insurance, your own travel insurance, tips, drinks, personal expenses and optional extras such as a balloon flight (about USD 450 to 550 per person). A German-speaking guide can be requested; availability and any supplement are confirmed in writing.

For reference, these are real trips with the starting prices shown on their pages on 29 October 2026, per person sharing, before flights: the 5-day Kenya Family Safari from USD 1,290, the 7-day Kenya Classic Safari from USD 1,650, the 10-day Kenya Safari and Beach Holiday from USD 2,450, the 6-day Big Cats Photographic Safari from USD 2,600 and the 14-day Kenya Grand Slam from USD 4,650. Compare them on our Kenya safari packages from Germany page.

Expert tip from our Nairobi team: Compare quotes line by line, not by the total. One operator’s “all inclusive” may exclude the Mara conservancy fee or the transfer back to the airport; another’s higher total may include a flight that saves you a six-hour drive. If a line is missing or unclear, ask for it in writing.

Schritt 6: Reisezeit and the Sommerferien

Kenya has wildlife in every month. The question is which trade-off you prefer: the Great Migration with the crowds and prices that come with it, or quieter plains at a better rate.

  • Sommerferien (late June to mid-September, staggered by Bundesland): dry season and the Great Migration in the Masai Mara, with river crossings most likely from late July into September. The busiest and most expensive weeks; book 9 to 12 months ahead. Bundesländer with early holidays (Nordrhein-Westfalen, Hessen in some years) can travel in July before the August peak. Our Great Migration 2027 guide gives honest odds.
  • Herbstferien (October): still dry in most parks, the last herds moving south, far fewer vehicles and better value. Our recommendation for families who can travel then.
  • Weihnachtsferien: warm and green, with resident big cats and popular camps booked early. Read our Christmas safari in Kenya guide.
  • Winterferien and Fasching (January to February): hot, dry and quiet, with newborn animals, excellent big-cat viewing and the clearest Kilimanjaro mornings. See Kenya safari in January.
  • Osterferien (March to April): the long rains usually begin in late March. Green landscapes, dramatic skies and the lowest rates, but some tracks are muddy and a few camps close. We will tell you plainly what to expect.

Schritt 7: Health, Impfungen and the Reiseapotheke

See your Hausarzt or a Tropeninstitut 6 to 8 weeks before departure. The Auswärtiges Amt states that malaria risk is high year-round across Kenya below 2,500 m and low in central Nairobi and above 2,500 m, and advises Malariaprophylaxe combined with mosquito protection for the high-risk areas, which include the Masai Mara, Amboseli, the lakes and the coast. Hepatitis A, typhoid and up-to-date standard vaccinations are the usual recommendations; the STIKO and the DTG publish current lists.

On yellow fever, the Auswärtiges Amt states that no vaccination is mandatory for direct arrivals from Germany, that travellers aged 12 months or over arriving from a yellow fever area need proof of vaccination, and that vaccination is generally recommended for most of the country. The same page noted an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo with one imported case in Kenya in early October 2026, and advised avoiding unnecessary hospital visits and contact with wildlife; Kenya screens arrivals and asks travellers from several neighbouring countries to complete a digital health form, which does not affect a direct flight from Germany. Pack a Reiseapotheke with your regular medication, a broad-spectrum antibiotic if your doctor agrees, rehydration salts, plasters and a good repellent. Our guides to malaria on a Kenya safari and getting sick on safari explain how care works in the bush.

Schritt 8: Nachhaltigkeit, Packliste and Trinkgeld

Nachhaltig reisen

Sustainability is the question German guests raise most often, and Kenya has a good answer in its conservancy model. Around the Masai Mara, Maasai landowners lease their land to a small number of camps; vehicle numbers are capped, grazing is managed and lease payments go directly to the families. Staying in a conservancy, even for part of your trip, is the single most effective choice you can make. Beyond that: choose camps that run on solar power and manage their water, say no to plastic bottles (Kenya banned single-use plastic bags in 2017 and bans plastics in parks), avoid wildlife interactions that involve touching or feeding animals, and tip the people who make the trip work. Our responsible safari guide goes further.

Packliste

Layers for cold dawns and hot afternoons, neutral colours (camouflage clothing is illegal for civilians in Kenya), a wide-brimmed hat, binoculars and a camera with at least 200 mm of reach. Kenya uses British three-pin Type G sockets at 240 V, so bring an adapter. If your route includes a light aircraft, luggage is limited to 15 kg in a soft bag. Our Kenya safari packing list is complete.

Trinkgeld

Tipping is expected in Kenya in a way it is not at home, and it forms a real part of staff income. A fair benchmark is USD 10 to 15 per guest per day for your driver-guide and USD 5 to 10 per guest per day into the camp staff box, plus a few dollars for porters and transfer drivers. Bring US dollars in small, newer notes; euros are accepted at some camps but not all. Our tipping guide has the full breakdown.

Schritt 9: Choose an Operator and Book

German travellers can book through a Reiseveranstalter at home, which brings Pauschalreise protection and a higher price, or directly with a licensed Kenyan company, which is usually better value and puts you in contact with the people who will meet you at the airport. Whichever you choose, check the same things.

  • Lizenz: Kenyan operators must hold a Tourism Regulatory Authority licence. Ours is TRA1/47/C01/77087; ask any company for theirs.
  • Private vehicle: a 4×4 with a pop-up roof that is yours alone, with a window seat for every guest.
  • Itemised quote: every fee, meal and transfer on its own line, with deposit and cancellation terms in writing before you pay.
  • Evacuation cover: ask whether flying-doctor cover is included for the safari days.
  • Recent reviews: look for how problems were handled, ideally from German-speaking guests.

Our 10 questions to ask before booking a safari and safari cancellation policy guide are worth reading before you commit to anyone, including us. Booking with us works in four steps: send your dates and group details; receive a written, itemised quote; pay a deposit to secure camps and vehicle, with terms confirmed in writing; then apply for the eTA and insurance, book flights, and receive your final documents and your guide’s details.

A Sample 7-Day Kenya Safari

This is our 7-day Kenya Classic Safari, listed from USD 1,650 per person sharing, and the route we suggest most often to German guests on a first visit.

  1. Tag 1, Nairobi to Amboseli: drive south after breakfast, arrive for lunch and take an afternoon game drive among the elephant herds.
  2. Tag 2, Amboseli: a sunrise drive for Kilimanjaro, Observation Hill, then an afternoon by the swamps.
  3. Tag 3, Amboseli to Lake Naivasha: into the Great Rift Valley; a boat trip among hippos and fish eagles, or cycling in Hell’s Gate.
  4. Tag 4, Naivasha to the Masai Mara: via the Rift Valley viewpoint, arriving for lunch and an afternoon game drive.
  5. Tag 5 und 6, Masai Mara: a full day on the plains with a picnic lunch, then more drives with an optional balloon flight or Maasai village visit.
  6. Tag 7, Mara to Nairobi: an early game drive, then back to Nairobi by road, or by air at extra cost, for the evening Lufthansa departure.

With ten days, our Kenya Safari and Beach Holiday adds three nights on Diani Beach. Active travellers should look at our hiking and safari combinations, which pair Mount Kenya or the Aberdares with the savanna.
